- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+108Get rid of the speakers and you have a winner.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+103glass = glare
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+64not a fan of the 5 watt speakers...
i personally won't use them cause i'm sure they won't sound as great as the ones i have currently, plus they simply don't look that great - LowRentDiggs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Hopefully this will usher in a new trend of designing monitors to take up 20% more desk space than needed.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22The Inquirer says more Bull ***** than Sony, if that is even possible..
- brokekneck, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26@ themastersb
Believe it or not Dell produce's really decent LCD's. They've been getting good rating for years.
@ se1zure
Cool picture but no. The software in the monitor picture looks like LightWave 3d though. Best 3D app ever. 3D studio max can suck a D-CK. - antanicus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24...fugly.
digg me down, will ya?
Still I believe it's HORRENDOUS design. - titsmagee123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Glass = fingerprints
- KinGvsKinG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15agreed, that's one ugly ass display.
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14He doesn't need a source, He's a writer for the Inquirer!
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -17/+28Much better than Apple's displays (an cheaper as well).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I've got balls too.
- xyphur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I thought half the reason why we went to LCD was for weight/space savings... Why on earth did they attach x lbs. of glass to this otherwise-beautiful display panel?
Ditch the glass. And the speakers too, while you're at it... Speakers that small aren't likely to satisfy the kind of person that'll be willing to fork over the money for one of these things, and thus they end up adding to the total cost of the unit for absolutely no reason. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Much better than Apple's displays (an cheaper as well)."
It is a very nice looking display, but what the hell are you talking about cheaper for? It's a concept. This is not a product and it has no price yet. If you think Dell and their shiny new Alienware dept. would sell this 22" display for the same price as Dell's current offerings then you do not understand how this market works at all. - bertsisterwanda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13tis nice to see a new monitor press shot, and not having to look at the standard blue Mac OSX like wallpaper.
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13People who use their desktop LCDs outside in the sun = 0
I have one of those glassy LCDs and glare is a non issue indoors. Glare is not noticeably worse than a matte screen. - krigney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11it seems everyone likes royale noir
- tipsqueal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Seriously dude. Who gives a *****? Why must every goddamn article on Digg come down to how much someone hates Bush. Look I don't like Bush, never have, probably never will, but this is an article about a prototype monitor, not about Bush's campaign or how much Mr. Michael Dell sucked him off. Leave the ***** politics out of it.
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I completely agree
- Broccoli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually watage does not mean everything in speakers. A speaker can have low watage and be just as loud as a higher watage speaker due to efficency.
- spriggig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When I'm sitting at the computer, there is nothing behind the monitor that I want to see.
- ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I know that Dell used to make good CRTs...well actually they were rebranded Sony Trinitron monitors. My dad has one and it's awesome.
- kyuubi90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i rather they just make a simple design and focus in the inside, that looks really heavy have a little too much extra glass
- kaddy69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Dell always makes great monitors...... If only there computer were not *****!
- sandrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@egarcia
Read again. They mention a 30" LCD in the first paragraph, but the article is talking about a 22" LCD, which is pictured. 22" LCD @ 1920x1200 is just right. - ldura9t, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Yes, maybe no glare in the basement.. with the lights out. Even a window, or a lightbulb will make it look like crap.
- polyphonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4was i the only one expecting some ridiculous monitor with a scrotum-appearing thing hanging from it
- matthewsr2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i'd be tempted to strip the glass and the speakers and just go with the nice minimalistic bezel on the lcd, assuming that it has some sort of protection on top of the LCD panel.
- daofma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That monitor there is listed for 1600x1200. Where'd you get one with 2048x1536?
- gatcho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5that is the ugliest monitor concept i have ever seen.
- ajchavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4we all got the reference.
its still not funny. - plum, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It's *****.
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you want to talk about desk-space-hogging monitors?
right here before me; i have a 70 pound, 21 inch flatscreen _CRT_ with a maximum resolution of 2048x1536... it's ***** amazing (and heavy)
and it only cost me 90 bucks... http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=714276&CatId=172 - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6huh? source?
- limbikity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"ultra-flat"? how flat can things get?
- SpoBo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well it looks fake to me. All it is, is a 24" dell with a glass plate slapped on it and some speakers. And those speakers .; they don't require power?
- tarjan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6if you consider 6bit + 2bit dither to be 8 bit, then yes dell does 8 bit monitors in their laptops. Otherwise there are no high resolution laptop screens available in 8 bit at the resolutions they choose. If anyone knows this to be incorrect, please post up links.
- jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4dell makes bad ass monitors why can't they do the same for computers and not have 15gigs of crap that i didn't want
- joeroot1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Why the hype, it doesn't look very nice, just cheap and tacky. Dell are trying to hard to be futuristic, and have ended up with a crappy product.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It looks like whoever designed this was asked how the word 'retarded' and 'American excess' could be integrated into a display design The artist responded by saying, "You mean bling? ***** yeah man, I can make this thing look bitchin'." And so it was . . .
Sadly, the artist's original design, which included 22" gold speakers that rotated according bass vibrations, pushed the display over budget. - SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9correction:
Dell doesn't produce anything. they contract it out to someone like foxconn and put their name on it and sell it. so in a sense they are just resellers with bad customer support. - icon1985, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sure, having a glass flame does make the LCD looks futuristics and cool; the quality of the embedded speakers world probably degrade the overall rating/user experience.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, SirNoobius: Apple doesn't produce anything either. They, like Dell, have everything built in Asia. Remember the "iPod Slave City" scandal? Apple is a design firm that sells consumer electronics, and has bad customer support.
Sony, HP, and every other company is exactly the same. Everything is made in China or Korea, no matter what logo is on the outside. - shadus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is dell we're talking about... they'd manage to screw it up between concept and production somehow.
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm... won't easily rotate to portrait mode, therefore rule out. Pretty, though, at least if you're one of those anal retentive types who won't stand for smudges, specs of dust or clutter in your work environment (i.e., not me).
- andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2daofma: He may be running it in 43htz interlaced then. (or perhaps 60htz progressive, something lower than 85htz as the spec's say 1600x1200 @ 85htz.) I used to do that with a 19inch monitor to get it up to 1920x1080. The flicker was quite obvious, but it did work.
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It looks like something Sony would design, which is a good thing. Sony's BRAVIA televisions are beautiful.
But this is DELL so the build quality will be crap, the creases in the plastics will be huge and the details will be lacking. I can just picture it shipping with an xbox-like power brick. - ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2when it comes to a stationary screen, i say its okay... you can adjust the ambient light as necessary.
- DaveClarkOne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Dell Design" is one of the most laughable phenomenons out there. Gawd, how does Dell do it???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Glass is a complete waste of space, if I'm going to make room for that monitor I'd much rather give up space on my desk for screen space, not some cheapass speakers.
