- kellfinder, on 10/30/2008, -0/+14checked out the video at the end of the review.. pretty cool looking little machine actually: http://hothardware.com/Articles/Dell-Studio-Hybrid ...
- nerk01, on 10/30/2008, -0/+14FTA: "Pictured here, if midnight blue isn't your bag, there are a myriad of other color options to chose from, including a bamboo finish, if you're the eco-friendly type that's still into killing trees and the like."
Great way to show intelligence there. Bamboo is a grass and as such is much more renewable than a tree. - S5S5S5, on 10/30/2008, -3/+16Awesome PC if you want to make a donation to the "We're Dell, Give Us Money" fund.
From the CNet review: "Standard budget PCs offer better price-performance and more upgradeability; laptops deliver better space economy with similar specifications for the dollar."
http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/dell-studio-hybri ... - obliviousfool, on 10/29/2008, -0/+13Price point between $500 and $700 according to most sites.
- Jektal, on 10/29/2008, -2/+14Nice article, although your editor is slacking off on a few spelling errors...
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+8Trolling for 27 years? Wow! Is the pension any good?
- LemonHerb, on 10/30/2008, -2/+8That is a pretty bitchen little computer. It would be the perfect upgrade from my xbox with XBMC.
- MacBookForMe, on 10/29/2008, -0/+6Oh, I love some spelling errors...they make me a human...:)
- S5S5S5, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6"It's essentially a notebook in a small form factor desktop."
Right, get a laptop. Or get a laptop and attach a monitor/keyboard/mouse. Either way, you get a better product in the end that's cheaper and without the Dell-oval-box-design tax. - Ricochetbiscuit, on 10/30/2008, -2/+7That CNet review is pretty contradictory. "It's a pretty compelling machine for its size" or something like that.. and "it uses a bit less power than a typical desktop".... Umm, no, it uses a LOT less power than a typical desktop; about 1/2 the power actually. It's essentially a notebook in a small form factor desktop. Granted it's more expensive than a budget desktop but it's also a heck of a lot smaller and just as capable. Stick this thing in your wall unit next to the TV and stereo and it will look nice, not take up much space and generate near zero noise and minimal heat.
It's the price you pay for size. Add up the components inside and you're looking at a notebook cost model, plain and simple. - andrewlotta, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5If I remember correctly, the bamboo choice is a LOT more money.
- longchamp, on 10/30/2008, -2/+7You mean i can pay laptop prices with none of the associated mobility? AWESOME
PS. That bamboo case is effin' gorgeous. - myempyrean, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5Because Macbooks are laptops and the hybrid is a desktop?
I fail to see what you're trying to point out - jbob2000, on 10/30/2008, -2/+6"Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100"
Automatic fail. - cappiello, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4The thing that really kills this and the mac mini for me is the smaller hard drives. Put an easily swappable regular size HD in there and you've made a sale.
- JasonCox, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Heck, put a laptop-sized GFX card in there and you'd be set.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -5/+9Somehow think that Macbooks will survive.
- LastDitchHero, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3401K with 4% matching LULZ actually.
- arjie, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3You may just be joking, but this seems more aimed at the same place as the Mac Mini.
- Brassbud, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3I like how they put the "eco-friendly" PC next to a 24" monitor. Lets hope its at least LED backlit.
- jerkychew, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Under $400 for a Core 2 Duo based model at www.delloutlet.com - This could potentially be a good MythTV and XBMC machine, if the Linux video drivers for its X3100 would mature. I've seen reports of users getting the X3100s working in Ubuntu but nothing concrete yet.
- snds, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3I am surprised at the comparison of low-impact desktops like this and the Mac Mini to laptops. They have different purposes entirely. This PC is best to give a baby boomer who wants a computer but doesn't want a beige or black behemoth. It requires little setup, is small and compact as to not take over the entire office, and works as well if not better than some laptops (perhaps this is where the comparison stems?).
Also this little box works ideally as a media center. The small case format and design is very living room friendly, add to that the inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive and you have an all-in-one, multi-format media box. PS3 and XB360 (I have both) just don't have the codec and software scalability of other media extenders and being able to play Blu-Ray on the same machine I want to stream MKV's to is invaluable for an HD media junkie.
And considering that us gadget and computer nerds pollute every second we have our computer on, having a eco-friendly computer that is low power and uses sustainable materials for its construction is a great way to offset always-on 24/7 electric bills. - linuxwarz, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Looks like a ripoff of the Aperture Science computers.
http://media.techeblog.com/images/aperture_.jpg - inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Runs Vista...Nope,not getting it.
- Zippo, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Pump this little bitch up with an decent graphics chip and I'm sold.
- diggplug, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3Bamboo might be technically a grass but I think from the text the operative words are "trees and the like"... great way to nit-pick there. It's still a natural resource...
- JasonCox, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Hrm, I guess you do learn something new every day.
- gerrylazlo, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1No serious 3d hardware for gaming. No TV card capability. Certainly has no business as a compact entertainment pc. That's unfortunate because they wood look awesome on my TV stand.
- andrewlotta, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I ordered my Studio 15 in the summer and I have not had one problem. Not to mention I got a 3 year warranty with it...
- Ricochetbiscuit, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Drop in a USB TV adapter and your set but if it's on your TV stand, why would you even need one?
- Plastic3D, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Would love to see a Quad-Core version..
- JasonCox, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Update your drivers.
- D3PyroGS, on 10/30/2008, -2/+3I don't care that those are eco-friendly, but they do look freaking sweet.
- LOCK3D, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Richochet. It wasn't contradictory. WTF are you smoking? If you are quoting something, make damn sure you have it right.
"If you're considering all of the computers in the $700 to $1,000 price range, the Dell Studio Hybrid is NOT very compelling." - JasonCox, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Lol if your grammar makes sense.
- derekmas10, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2gotta say... I'm kinda hooked on the Lenovos.
- KJSatz, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I believe you meant:
"Lol if your grammar sense." - MattBD, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Can't it just be a good product in its own right? And this isn't a laptop, it's a small form factor desktop.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Intel CTO VBI means Intel based, Custom To Order, Verified By Intel. It's a platform of standardized, interchangeable parts. as opposed to proprietary designs that is supported by Intel.
- cfeick, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1nice physical size, and the HDMI looks great on these
- tracker1, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I've been thinking of putting together an atom 330 for an XBMC + Ubuntu box myself. This is kind of compelling, but more than I'm planning on spending for my build.
- theblacknight, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1AC? Don't most computers use a run on DC? The summary seems to be making a big deal out of the AC thing, which isn't new unless the circuits themselves run on AC.
I mean, a computer than had circuits that ran on AC would be great and green and all because it wouldn't need an 80% efficient power supply but I don't really think that's what they're talking about since it has standard components. - joltjake, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1No dude; no.
- BrainTanned, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1And "comprised of" is basically corner-boy ghetto slang....
http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/comprised.html - gerrylazlo, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1DVR functionality.
- carlosos, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1It would have been nice if they would have compared the PC to a computer build with desktop low power CPUs to see how big the difference is in power usage and performance.
I mean I don't plan to spend $700 if I can get similar performance for $200 with a custom build PC. - sandraprinsloo1, on 02/18/2009, -0/+0I don't really see how this is beneficial.
http://board-games.holidaysiam.com/ - philz, on 10/30/2008, -0/+0What about noise when playing HD content? Any fans running full speed or something?
- improllyatwork, on 10/30/2008, -0/+0Its a bios problem not a driver, there replacing the motherboard, its just a pain in the ass. only happens when inserting flash and blocked memory
