- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am a Dell VAR (value added reseller)
so much i could go on about their changes, and how it makes no sense to buy from a VAR, when the better deals are found on their home and small business promos anyway. Thier warranty have shrunk to in some cases 90 days, their policies are strict and benefit them for the most part. Get less, pay more.
They have cut corners everywhere they can. Its a shame they opted to turn down AMD a few years back. Thats what I like about HP/ Compaq, they are able to offer so much more for their customers from price options to better computing experience. - serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17of7 - The article means from a financial perspective. Of course this behemoth isn't going away, it's not going to grow at a 30% clip a year anymore in a bleeding margins commodity business.
- copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think their best days are behind them but I do miss the killer deals they used to have.
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They've been. I've helped a few people with their computer programs, and it's always been Dell, Gateway, and E-Machines.Esp. deld since there so cheap. When you pay 300 for a computer, what do you expect? Tech support just reads from a book, and idiots who have seen their commercials only believe they won awards for support cause they said so.
- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think it will be the geeky morons deciding things, but the marketplace. As the last few quarters at Dell have shown, the marketplace has already decided.
If you actually read the story, it does say Dell will be "going" anywhere, just that its best days may be behind it. That means the quick growth it experienced will give way to stability and consolidation. It will become just another box maker. - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gee, it only took 10 years for the rest of the computer industry to catch up with the Dell manufacturing process.
I think Dell has been hurt by some misteps from Intel, and that could change if Intel regains its marketshare or if Dell decides to start carrying other processors. Its also inevitable to some degree - Dell was growing at 2-3x the rate that the PC market was expanding... its simply impossible to keep up that growth long term. To date, Dell hasn't beel loosing marketshare at all either, they are just not gaining it as fast. They are also going to be facing some stiff competition from discount Asian manufacturers in the future as well - Lenovo Think Pads for one, and I'm sure there will be many more to follow. Dell's price advantage is nearly gone, now they are left to compete with customer service and advertising - something they need to kick up a notch. - dwiezel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How come we allow so much asian discount junk into this country? We did not let Japan get away with it back in the early 80's -- we leveled the playing field with tariffs and other methods. I am all for free and fair enterprise with an emphasis on fair! It's time to slap china with an embargo! LOL
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, its not Dell but all PC manufacturers are down......I know I'll get killed, but I think Vista can be right when PC's will start taking off again....with as cheap as computers are, people will start to buy new ones to replace what they have and use the other for kids, or go real cheacp and buy the kids computers....especially seeing that LCD monitors are getting cheap, will help also..
- dwiezel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, Dell is a global company with American roots. Yes, they do use components from asian countries but so does everyone else. The point is that there should be some kind balance in the world of commerce. If market forces cannot dictate or implement a balance then other measures must be taken.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell is going under. I used to love Dell, now I no longer want to do business with it :)
- mouseman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0down with dell.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell will contine to bea major computer products company no matter what anyone says....their products are top notch...better than what I can say about amd when you remove a fan from their processors and the chip goes up in smoke...unrelated but anyways I will always buy dell of pos hp etc
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0"It will become just another box maker."
It's just another box maker. - binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That sums it up in the title... +digg
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work in the field repairing computers for a living, and I have to say almost EVERY Dell owner can't stand them anymore because of their customer service switch. WAY TO GO DELL! We all know that move was rediculous and stupid, but customers are ultimately what count in that regard. With people realizing just how lame they have become, they are really beginning to switch to better brands.
- peace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Dell is an American company not some chinese company using a form of modern day slavery in the form of extremely low wages and poor working conditions so they can dump their product and eliminate the competition!"
You're kidding right? Most of components used in Dell's are made either in Taiwan or China. - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gee, I wonder why they started selling TV's??
You mean you cant make millions/billions of dollars just selling pc's for $400 any more? Make that machines with intel cpu's and Windows OS.
No, they wont go anywhere, but deversity is key to their survival IMO. That is why HP, Apple, Sony, etc can continue to sell pc's. They have other products to help supplement the pitfalls. - pigsbladder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Their tech support can suck it.
I actually had to change my phone number because they wouldn't stop calling me asking for me to pay the bill of someone I had never heard of. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell's glory days are definately OVER.
Dell's problem is that they've always been budget systems, and now with companies like Lenovo, they will not be able to compete unless the can add value to justify the higher prices they need to charge. IBM saw that coming and dumped. Smart move. You think they can compete with Samsung on TV's?? Not a chance. The only thing selling Dell TVs is the name, and that isn't going to last.
Because they currently do so little R&D, most of the value they can really add is tech support, and from what I can tell they've fooked that up quite a bit lately.
Companies like Apple on the otherhand have a real differentiation and added value with respect to other box makers. That is why they are not only selling lots of iPods, but thier PC growth is about double the industry growth rate. Sony is another company that could compete by adding value, however they seem more interested in sticking dynamite up thier own asses and lighting it these days. - stubby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh odd. Dell has always had my laptops and desktops fixed within two days, usually the next day.
As far as AMD64 servers being cheaper than the Intel servers dell sells you're flat out wrong. However, they do virtualize much better, and use much less power. That is a recent development in the processor market though. - icetigaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It was only a matter of time until customers realized there are better places to look for computers than get a pos from Dell. I have never bought a Dell anything and probably never will.
- redpoint73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I take joy in seeing dell fail!
Compaq will live once again!"
Are you kidding? Compaq sucked even worse than Dell! They did the exact same thing that Dells does, making non-standard cases and parts so that you can't upgrade your mobo or use parts from other manufacturers. Their high end stuff was ok, but not very good value for your money. Their mid and entry level PC's were unreliable junk.
I can see Dell being less profitable in the years to come. But does anyone actually see another computer maker taking their place anytime soon? I don't, at least not in the short term. HP is long past their prime. Apple is too niche. Maybe Sony can jump in and take the lead, but it will take some years to happen. If at all. The top dog in any industry always gets replaced (except maybe Walmart!), but it will take some time. - dwiezel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whatever! Seems like a lot of belly-aching going on here. Want some wine with that cheez?
The bottom line is that Dell makes some reliable machines at reasonable prices and has been at it for a long time. Now that IBM has sold out to chinese, I will probably only buy Dell.
Look for deals at Spoofee.com! - oldgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In my area I'm seeing a trend, People are having custom PCs built by local repair centers including mine. They are though with the big PC makers for one reason or another.
- ickyelf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's amazing that in a society where people buy huge SUVs and Starbucks coffee buy the cheapest computers they can find. You get what you pay for!
- themachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dwiezel: The saying is, "Want some cheese with your *whine*?" Makes a lot more sense now, huh? ;-)
- SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe, it's really funny to see all these psudo-americans yelling "Buying American" from dell when every damn part in that computer is freak'n made in Taiwan, China or Japan. Wow, wave that flag guys. Wave it good.
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell sucks. "You have no business fixing my PC if you rode a yak to work."- Little Jimmy Norton
I will build my own PCs in the future with help from newegg.com. I get exactly what I want at a great price. For my next laptop, I will consider Toshiba, Alienware, or Apple depending on their intel hardware and pricing. - suicidal-kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I take joy in seeing dell fail!
Compaq will live once again! - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not going to discount Dell as yet. I clearly remember the same claims being made against Apple several years ago and they not only survived but prospered. Certainly Dell is capable of the same thing.
- twylight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stubby sez: As far as AMD64 servers being cheaper than the Intel servers dell sells you're flat out wrong. However, they do virtualize much better, and use much less power. That is a recent development in the processor market though.
Stubby you need to get an actual quote and compare them - in 4 way boxes the AMDs are 20k cheaper RIGHT now from HP. Intel pricing is laughable when you compare a 580 vs a 585. - dwiezel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No duh! Just a play on words -- Cheez as is in cheez-whiz -- like the pure crap that is being spewed out here *live* on Digg.com!
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah...sure they are. And Apple will be the best most benevolent cheapest industry leader ever with Google at it's side and AMD processors inside. Get a grip. Microsoft , Dell, and Intel aren't going anywhere no matter how much you geeky morons want them to.
- Technojunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dell is the company of choice for morons who think paying more money for Intel desktops and servers that burn twice the power to do less work than AMD64 machines makes sense.
- dwiezel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Down with Lenovo!!!
Dell is an American company not some chinese company using a form of modern day slavery in the form of extremely low wages and poor working conditions so they can dump their product and eliminate the competition! - IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Tech support in India? - check
Bundling spyware pre-installed? - check
I still buy from them but I wish they would fix these 2 problems. - DarthDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Dell is starting to piss people off, well in Canada anyways. For instance Dell does not offer free shipping anymore. They also do not provide customers with a copy of the Windows XP OS on disc, unless you want to dish out another $10.00 for it. After spending over $1,000 they want another $10 just to burn me a freekin disc? Dell sucks.
