- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Wow, lots of bad "Rumors" getting Digged.
- joeslice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Did you just say that Dell's website looks like Best Buy? Wow, have you been to both of those sites? Actually, if you take a close look, the similarities between those two sites are that they both have some menu-based navigation, leading you to products. However, there are hundreds of sites on the web with similar motifs.
The striking resemblance comes when you compare Alienware's site to Dell's site....
Home pages:
http://www.dell.com/
http://www.alienware.com/
Configurator:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DXPS600F3&s=dhs
http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Pages/Aurora_7500_r2.aspx?SysCode=PC-AURORA-7500-AB&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT&tag=1
And most pages in between bear obvious similarities.
(look at the cart by the way!!)
And guess what.... in almost every functional case, Dell had it first.
(PS Where on the Best Buy site can you configure?) - johnnylin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I await the day people stop digging stories that are speculations (e.g, iPod AV) and instead digg stories that actually happen. We could spend forever scratching our heads wondering which direction a company's going to take, what new developments may or may not be in X product.
Yes, it's interesting that Dell may acquire Alienware, but it's also interesting that Pepsi may acquire Fujitsu. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, and we could waste time talking about it, or we could just wait and see if it happens, THEN post that link ("Pepsi Acquires Fujitsu. Wtf?"), instead of wasting reader's and commenter's time. - AndrewMayne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's interesting that the "denial" came from an Australian rep for Dell and that it was worded rather strangely. I think there's more here.
- dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who are we supposed to trust?
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Cool" "appalling" "monstrous" and "unbeautiful" are all based on opinions. That's largely why I said "or something" at the end.
I just really don't think Dell has ever tried to push the exterior of their sysstems to anything original. Their upper-range XPS systems look exactly like their plain server/workstation computers only with a little silver and a red LED. Their middle-range XPS systems almost look identical to their Dimension E510s. Not to mention their smaller, lower end XPS systems look just like the small-formfactor PCs they released two years ago....only silverish grey.
Dell doesn't need to care about details like that because they are a company that focuses around making profits by efficiency of shipment/packaging....NOT by making superior and more expensive products. It's not a bad thing, it's just how each company works differently.
They both fill their own seprate niches and I'm perfectly happy with it staying that way. - whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Priced reasonably? Show me ANY Alienware and I will build one for considerably less.
- cceverett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Name one company Dell has purchased?? There is not any. This is not going to happen.
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Thank God. Even though Alienware is overpriced, I really doubt I would be comfortable with Dell taking them over. At least when it's Alienware running the joint you get cool cases or something.
- solo23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Dell's XPS range already offers better performance and better value than Alienware's machines and in the XPS mobile concept you've seen the potential of one of the cool new things Dell could do this year," McKeon added.
What a load!
I recall getting a call from a client. For some reason his computer wouldn't boot up (he had a dell). So I decieded to make a house call, I went over there and there was a damn hole in his motherboard....A hole.... Now not just any hole, but a hole big enough for my fist to go through! And of course, I call dell... "Oh that's not our faults!"
Ah I hate them.
Although, I have made a lot of money due to there crappy computers.
So that's rad. - whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Alienware sucks. Dell sucks. Customs FTW!!!
- willij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Link above does not work.
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/pressoffice/en/index?c=us&l=en&s=corp - computerdan000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good. I feel better now.
- cubbieco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's cheaper to make one yes... until you need support. Then you have to find the specific receipt for the specific vendor that you purchased a particular part from (assuming that you know which component is crashing your computer).
At least when you purchase a full system you have a single phone call to get things fixed. I believe alienware's tech support is probably superior to Dell, but I don't have personal experience with either. I do know it beats going directly to one source then to Maxtor, Western Digital, Creative, ASUS, Abit, or wherever to get a part replaced. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thanks for hte feedback jkfan87. Hte digg community would like you to know that whenever you call someone a moron, you should pay extra attention to your spelling.
- willij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dell is going to buy Alienware. Read: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/pressoffice/en/2006/2006_03_22_rr_001?c=us&l=en&s=corp
- rafgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't say I'm surprised this rumor turned out to be false. I am somewhat relieved though. Can you imagine Dell computers that cost as much as Alienwares? Talk about paying gold for crap.
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well...people love gossip in this world. That's why The Sun, Star, US Weekly, The National Enquirer, and many more of those gossip magazines are still thriving and doing great. Unfortunatly, people will sooner listen to baseless rumors that substantiated fact because people think that most facts are boring and love to see drama that follows whether little drama like this or big drama like....Bennifer breaking up.
It's sad, but it's true. - johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just one grain of salt? That's as good as saying 'maybe'.
Now, if they had said "grains" or "a pinch of salt" then this would absolutely confirm the pack of lies. - AbsentLight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is in fact. Its called irony.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/verbal_irony - Kodiak41226, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since when does Alienware advertise on TV, since Dell bought them is when. No one can deny that its a dell commercial with a different logo. Their standard go to www.dell.com/tv for our great deals has been applied to alienware, go to www.alienware.com/tv.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guy didn't deny it at all, he just said an Alienware competitor suggested it, so take it with a grain of salt. If this isn't true, it would be in Alienware's best itnerests to say so.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whether or not it's cheaper to build one depends on the value of your time.
Most things you take a do-it-yourself approach to is cheaper. It's cheaper to knit your own clothing, build your own car, and grow your own food. Most of us, at some point, concede that our time is better spent advancing our knowledge in our profession, and are willing to pay a premium on top of the base cost in order to benefit from someone elses knowledge and experience.
So yes, building it yourself is cheaper, provided your time is worthless. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3O RLY?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Your completely wrong. Alienware isn't that bad. Their workstations are pretty good machines and are priced reasonably. They have nice motherboards ect. and every processor available. What more do you want? You'd probably save money through Alienware these days when building a high-end workstation.
- DenZ88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As much as I loved Dell (running a dimension 8200 right now) back before the "Dude you're getting a Dell" scheme, I can't say much about where they're going. Visit their site, it looks like a Best Buy or something.
If they're going to focus on computers, they should stick to perfecting what they have now (and learn to drop some prices!! Hp has maxed out systems at half the price). Any acquisition of alienware would just add another "extreme XPS" department to their line of pc's. - walugi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That sure is fast
- dugbay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I chatted with a support rep and asked her. She said dell did not buy Alienware. I asked why the web site looks like Dells, she said she does not see a relation.
- punkguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How often are speculations made, then denied by the big companies, the in the near future come true. - not saying its necessarily the case, but don't rule out the possibility
- Ray301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I might believe that this was a rumor if it weren't for the fact that Alienware's site now suddently looks like dell.com
If Dell didn't buy alienware, then maybe they should sue Alienware for ripping their site off ;) - eyetaix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed. Every time I encounter a story like this, I usually sniff around WSJ.com or another conservative business-minded publication for verification. Generally speaking, it has proven to be quite effective in keeping my news honest. As you may have guessed, there's not even a hint of a rumor relating to Dell acquiring anyone. It could still happen, but based on all available evidence at this point, all signs point to rumor.
- ruiner5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, Dell Australia is calling the shots. I know Rahul, I worked at Dell, and I talk to Alienware quite a bit. Regardless we have word out of Austin, where we are from, that this is a done deal. Anyone in Australia is clearly not qualified to talk on this matter.

Decisions coming from Building 1 in Round Rock, not the outback. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2come on.... everyone knows Dell is buying Gateway, not "Alienware". Duh.
- rocu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm relieved. Dell would cheapen Alienware to a degree that would damage their outstanding reputation.
- fishlabs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Exactly. And who cares what hte hell Dell and Alienware are doing anyway?
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Alienware is ugly? Come on, thier PCs are the best looking of anything avalible form a company.
Those Thermaltake Kandalf cases look nice though. - GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Mod parent up
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1uglyfatboar is the biggest moron of them all. And then he points out stupid stories that other people submit.
- OOTay, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3they both suck, hopefully people will hurry up and freaking learn its cheaper and better to build one. hopefully alienware dies a quick death cuse their comps suxx0rs.
