- tbryant87, on 10/12/2007, -4/+134I like this idea. This will help promote open-source operating systems. I hate all the extra crap dell puts on their PCs.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+103Someone on Slashdot said they did a side-by-side comparison and the N-series was $185 cheaper sans Windows, so there's real savings to be had.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+72Your stylized comments are annoying to read.
- Erasmus354, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59Dell has been selling computers without an OS for quite some time. 6 months ago I set up a Dell computer for a client that was purchased with no operating system installed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34I just did a side by side comparison:
With Windows: $729
Without: $699
E521, AMD 64 X2 3800+, 1GB, 160GB, Same graphics, etc, etc.
Just get it with Windows and ask for your Windows refund. You get a better deal that way and have more options to choose from. - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Apparently their left hand doesn't know that their right hand is offering non-Windows PCs:
http://www.elflord.net/wtf.jpg - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Most likely the price will jump for most PCs are subsidized with crapware preloaded. I am sure Dell gets the OS pretty cheap, so the overall price will need to go up. I will be worth it though, not having to pay for Windows or have malware pre-installed. Plus with MSs goals on licensing, you may not be able to pass on the PC with the OEM OS anyway.
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I love that when you go to customize the computer when selecting speakers you get the option for:
"No speakers (Speakers are required to hear audio from your system) [Included in Price]" - JPPiper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Yes but you can install you own copy of Windows and not get all the bloat ware that Dell is famous for sticking on their systems!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18This is also awesome if you are constantly replacing your PC (or laptop) and don't want to pay for a new copy of Windows every time.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17lol?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Oh... my... God. This guy is mentally ill or something. I mean, I've seen his lame comments before where he puts those kinds of quotes in, but I didn't realize that he's doing that because he thinks Microsoft is "targeting" him and he's trying to "fight back".
- Kratos76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Check out the site for yourself, I just customized a really sweet E520, with a better graphics card and processor, and even with a 19" flat panel, it's still at $799! Looks pretty good to me!
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I worked for a manufacturer some 10+ years ago and this was an issue. I have a hard time believing the reasoning for forcing windows on customers, other than coercion by ms.
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If you're installing linux, shouldn't you know how to assemble a computer (and avoid $100s in Dell profit margin)?
- etherag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Seriously old news.... we've been buying unformatted N series systems since before I started working here 2.5 years ago...
- digitalrhino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ha, here's a fun trick to try:
Try and find these boxes on Dells website without doing a search for them. They may be official, but they aren't exactly advertised. You have to know they exist to find them they aren't listed with any of the other Desktops. - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wrong, you can install any OS you want. It doesn't have to be an OEM disk.
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8http://www.digg.com/software/Microsoft_hires_standards_expert_to_work_on_Wikipedia_entry_on_ODF_OOXML
Read first comment - mr1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think bundling it with a Ubuntu CD would have been better. It's easy enough to install and use if you have little technical know-how, yet powerful enough to get it to do what you want it to do if you know your way around Linux (or at least know how to get the info.)
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I disagree, in Asia selling computers without operating systems is the norm, not the exception. Yet it has done little to promote the open source movement in itself because people simply either uninstalled the free OS, and simply put in a legit or copied version of Windows. Heck in Asia, the authorized Apple resellers ship more than half the Macbooks with Windows preinstalled (since consumers want it).
In fact I am surprised that Dell didn't try this earlier, without having to pay the Microsoft tax means they get more revenues and hopefully they could pass some of the savings to us. - compgeek7889, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6were have you been ? dell has been selling computers w/o operating systems for some time now
- sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11The point here, is that windows used to force computer makers to not sell a computer without an os...
do to monopoly lawsuits around the world, they cant do as many shifty things as they would like, this frees up companies to be able to supply a demand they havent been able to supply. And of course it will be cheaper to get windows preinstalled than to buy and empty machine and install windows on it.. that isnt the point of buying a computer with no os...most peopel do that because they dont want windows.
and while they have been doing this for year.. it was hard to get it out of them.. and now it is official.. before theey would encourage you to get a windows pc.. Just like for years you could get an amd from dell... you just had to listen to a speail about how intel is better...blah blah blah.. and if you percisted.. they would sell you a dell with an amd inside.... now it is offical.. no bs. same thing here. - iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I bought a Precision 350n almost 4 years ago. How is this new?
- tbryant87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why pay for it if you don't have to. Would you pay extra for a house that came furnished an then throw all the furniture away?
- fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@bobcrotch: Youve never used linux have you
- humperdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am also wanting to upgrade my pc,as its > 5 yrs old. I have the retail box copy of win. XP from when I upgraded this one, so now I suppose I can buy this pc, without OS and install my win XP onto it. I will retire the old pc, so I still only am using one copy of XP. I assume this is legal? Anyone else did this?
- keitho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5they have done this before. its not new.
No OS business desktops - 08/2002
http://news.com.com/Dell+unhooks+Windows+from+desktops/2100-1001_3-949671.html
No OS consumer desktop - 10/2005
http://news.com.com/Dell+offers+an+open-source+PC/2100-1042_3-5888427.html - donmesserli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is VERY OLD news. I purchased two N-Series Dell's for a company I was working for back in early 2003. They had already been selling them for about a year at that time.
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@mirage
How about notebook PC's? I run Linux (dual boot with XP, for school) on a Dell laptop. I would've loved to build my own PC, but I needed a notebook, not a desktop. - zkakisochra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@erasmus -"Dell has been selling computers without an OS for quite some time. 6 months ago I set up a Dell computer for a client that was purchased with no operating system installed."
@8086ed-"I just did a side by side comparison:

@sremick-"Someone on Slashdot said they did a side-by-side comparison and the N-series was $185 cheaper sans Windows, so there's real savings to be had."
etc etc
like half of the replies to this comment are contradictory, and many still have positive diggs....why?
people spouting misguided notions as fact? I'm not saying anyone is wrong about anything....only that maybe some fact checking before posting is in order. - kraniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm not a tremendous fan of Dell by any means (my relatives have had terrible experiences with their notebook quality and I, being the family tech support, end up being the one bearing the brunt of their misfortunes). But man, this is actually pretty cool of them.
System76 (www.system76.com) still gets my money for Linux laptops though. I love my Gazelle. - konspence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One of your servers is going to have to come out of the closet now.
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4DELL has offered the "N" series without Windows for about half a decade. The real question is when will I be able to go to the DELL site, pick ANY computer they sell and select a non-Windows operating system or naked box.
- Sneaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, burying just because its extremely old news. Dell has been doing this for a very long time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sadly, this has been around for months and just now it was dugg. Most digger are surprised by this article. That is becuase you have to be in the right place at the right time and have to open the proper javascript menu AND know what "Open-Source Desktops" mean.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ mirag3
"If you're installing linux, shouldn't you know how to assemble a computer (and avoid $100s in Dell profit margin)?"
Um no, Dell sells in such bulk that they can sell you a complete bundled PC for less than it'd cost due to markups for individual parts from say NewEgg or TigerDirect. But I can go along with the idea of building your own just to ensure your hardware is supported under Linux. - antiNeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At the top of the page: "Dell recommends Windows® XP Professional"
X-D - lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mirag3... lets say you work as an IT guy for a company.. you have to set up 200 linux boxes within 2 weeks.. are you still interested in hand building these boxes and saving little if any money at all?.
- mumbler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does anyone else who reads Slashdot get deja vu when reading this?
- motters, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hurrah! No more pre-installed "crapware".
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I think Michael Dell is doing this because he wants to show Steve Jobs that he can sell boxes without an operating system, in order to convince Jobs to bundle OS X with Dell computers, which he has been trying to do for a couple of years. Good luck with that dude.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny that when you customize the machine, it won't allow you to finish the transaction b/c the optical drive you select (anything but the default selection) is "not compatible with vista" was the reason it gave me everytime.
- diggitydank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you go to the Dell Home and Home Office page, go to the drop down menus with "Desktops", "Notebooks", etc. Under the Desktops drop down, there is a selection for Open-Source Desktops. Mind you, it does not show up when you select Dimension Desktops, but it is not completely impossible to find. Anybody who cannot find that probably would not be buying an OS-free system anyway.
EDIT: I guess I should have read what avihappy said before me. - sammyc53, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate it when the don't have a 'No Monitor! Option !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just bought a C521 out of their Returns sections for $249. It had 7.1, XP Media Center, SATA, etc...
$600 - $700 dollars for a desktop is way to much for me. Sorry. - wiremonkeymommy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2those prices suck!
you can get these boxes way cheaper with an XP license (in case you need it, ya' know?) and more gear (like a 17" LCD & DVD burner on the E521 which I got for my wife last month) if you watch Dell's sales... then load your own "distro du jour" (FreeBSD FTW!! :D).
ok, per any "Dell sucks' rhetoric, I don't doubt it by any means, I just think I've been really lucky, with very very few problems. - aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sales won't be great. Most users who aren't business 'geeky' enough to want to fresh-boot with linux aren't looking dells. That said, this is a neat platform for anyone who wants to throw a verson of linux on, and is rewarded with dell support (which, say what you will, is more of a reward than a penalty)
- micro506, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yay for paranoid schizophrenia.
- FKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How is this possible at all? I thought Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and their cronies were physically holding guns to Michael Dell's head forcing him to install Windows on all the PCs they sell.
- kabifff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 Wow, that Pentium D is SUCH a great processor, too......
