- achoi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+90"D.C Photographer's Ferrari puts your toyota civic to shame"
Yeah if I had the money I can have an ego boost too. 6TB of portable harddrives? that's stupid, you KNOW he's not going to be lugging all that around, woulda been more cost effective to build himself a fileserver.
Or several fileservers.
Out of emachines. - kernelhappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+67That's so he can play sub commander.
Dial in a solution and flood the tubes! - achoi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+68"toyota civic"
jesus, time for a new years resolution to cut down on the drinking! :-( - meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60Thx credit cards! I'll be paying for this rig for 256 years @ only 43.7% interest!
Veddy veddy VEDDY revordink! - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -10/+60isn't this the submitter's own pic? look at his submissions - he submitted the front page of his blog.
and why the "celeron emachine" plug? they suck, and he could have said "desktop" instead. - jmz635, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47I don't have a Celeron E-Machine?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36small penis?
- konradk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34it's probly just a diversion so nobody realizes that his cameras actually suck (where are they?)
- JorgeGonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27How come whenever someone gets a multi-monitor setup going, they have to put a Matrix screensaver?
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32Yea, but he has the highest "Cost of computer to quality of work" ratio ever. Go check out his lame pictures on his flickr site...
He even has a website http://www.johnharrington.com/
It is all crap ><
My $700 IBM T43 laptop will convert a RAW file into a JPG with no compression in 11 seconds. I also have a couple of external hard drives that hold 'em for me. You really don't need a $30,000 "primary" workstation to be a good photography. What a rich loser. - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -9/+33Five G5s?
So...he's got about the same amount of computing power as one Core 2 Extreme PC.
Silly Mac nerds never know when to give it up.
(going for record Digg down) - HHP2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22His neck must hurt.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23"OK this is the third video to hit the News section frontpage today.... call it a minor annoyance but I think it would be much better if this was submitted in the Video section instead."
What the hell? There is no video. - doktorrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+211) Buy lots of fancy gear.
2) Pimp rig on digg
3) Become famous photographer.
4) Move office out of (parent's?) basement.
We seem to be on step 2. - DenTPuzz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Maybe he's compensating for something...?
- Maagic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19My calculator puts a emachine to shame.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+211. I don't have a Celeron E-Machine
2. We don't care. I've seen machines more powerful than that
3. Give me the same amount of money you spent on it and I'll build a cluster far more powerful than that. - Oceas, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Nice setup, but hardly ground breaking. *yawn*
- UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24"workstation puts your celeron emachine to shame."
Not really. They are G5's and G4s . PPC is dead. Screens are nice though. Meh. - doosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I used to pimp out my workstation when I needed the power for my work and ego.
Now I have the crappiest computer in the house, a B210 Dell Celeron for $200. Works great for me. Mathematica and the Oxford English Dictionary still work great.
Sometimes obsessing on the tech means you are not paying attention. - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17It's about the same as every video post production machine I've worked on in the last 6 months
It's overkill for a photographer (unless he was a photographer for nasa) but it'd still be a slick machine to work on... - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17He thinks it's a video because he didn't click, and didn't realize that the thumbnail next to the story also works for submitted flickr photos.
- kevyn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19why is his phone on the ceiling? get a bigger desk.
- RedHairedMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Setup is nice, but beyond overkill. Even dealing with RAW files you don't need that much. I have 2GB of memory on an Athlon X2 and it only takes a few seconds to process a RAW file. The 30" displays are nice for work, however I don't think I'd need more than one. Hell, I'd be happy and totally productive with a 15" MacBookPro and a 24" wide screen display. Besides, as we can see from his site, better hardware does not a better photographer make. Many of the most brilliant photographers shot with crap cameras, sometimes deliberately. But if it gets you paid then go for it.
- Paul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15He's a guy just like us cept after after he puts his tshirt over his chair he makes great photos.
- adiosk8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16it would be a lot cooler if it was custom in some way, any joe smo could go to the apple store and pickup that stuff (if they sold G5's anymore)
- popebadass, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15*cough* small penis *cough*
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Did this guy (and/or the submitter) really expect to get anything other than criticism by posting this on Digg? Really. What did he expect? A lot of "oohs 'n' ahhs" and "good jobs, nice setup!" Riiiiight...
- ChoadNamath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Thank you for gracing us with your presence, John. I will always remember the day your e-penis caused a solar eclipse.
- g4blows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It really hit close to home for me because I do have a celeron emachine.
- RedHairedMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10His photos aren't that great...
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9When he was a kid, was he the type to brag about his dad's new car and how much faster it is than the neighbor kid's family car? I hate those one-upmanship competitive types.
- chadtatro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9ya.. it cost him a girlfriend, and a life.
- tuned2chords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i was applying for a competitive internship at a photographer's studio last week and had a little conversation about the quality of photos today. if you want to succeed, you have to be great. with websites like flickr, news magazines can buy mediocre photos and print at low-low cost. if you want to succeed at commercial photography, you have to be great.
as mentioned earlier: http://www.johnharrington.com/
that guys photos blow. they are 100 % mediocre, drawing towards the terrible side. he was a great setup of machines for the work he's doing. First, he's working in RAW, which if you don't understand, basically means uncompressed image files. JPEGs and the like compress color ratios, thus making them smaller. shooting in RAW allows for much greater diversity in color ratio editing later on, plus the file size is changed from 3mb to 35mb.
Second, this guy is likely working in 32-bit and 64-bit imaging. Processing such intense images, it's no wonder that he has that computer setup. Notice how I said "it's no wonder that he has that setup" and not "that he needs that setup." Remember, this guys photos are legitimately terrible. The Quality of work he's shooting relative to the quality of machines he's working on is terrible! - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9If you're shooting in raw the image files are huge, and you get a lot of them, set up batch process with a bunch in photoshop and you need all the horsepower you can get
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Quad G5
Dumbass - docillenstein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Many have done much more with much less. Particularly those that just had film and a darkroom.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just have Electric Sheep.
Matrix screensavers are required if you've only had a multi-monitor setup for less than 2 weeks. Then, you realize you just look like a tool and change it. - zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8poor eye site I guess from the screen real estate.
- And0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Abridged version:
"I am even more awesome than you thought. STFU and get back to worshiping me." - axentrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Show-off...!
- EvolvedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That e-machines comment doesn't belong here. This is Digg, a website full of super geeks and technophiles, not a car enthusiast website forum..
Odds are many of us have rigs much more impressive than his, and we probably make better use of it as well. - rockefeller, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Seems a bit overkill for photography.
I wonder how much excess energy he's wasting with all the ***** he really doesn't need. - selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I hate them more!!! ;-)
- xbasilx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6wonder how long before he gets robbed
- MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He has his TVs tuned to FOX News too... figures.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6... and I thought it came from the Matrix screen saver. That's so trendy.
- wdarab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6all this to upload a jpg?
