- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it's bad ass. I wonder if you can have a leather case made for your handset... oh and a belt clip too!!
No really, I would actually use this driving down the road just to mess with people. I love the secretary shoulder-rest idea!!!! - gol706, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lame, I thought something like this would be pretty obvious. If you want to do something cool, put something like this inside your old phone:
http://www.gsm-modem.de/gsm-module.html
slip a SIM card in and you've got a working phone. If you can make it dial and do caller ID, you can get some real bonus points. - thetbad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1next step: make a self-contained cellular phone in a retro phone -- I'm talkin' base and handset! Just plop that bad-boy down, and start dialing rotary-style.
- zenscope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1simple, but awesome!
"because we can." - skwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What you need is an old SLIC adapter that allows you to plug any phone into a cell line, and have an old Western Electric Desk Set 500 you can get out next time a passenger asks to borrow your phone.
If you have the right kind of phone, the rotary dial will actually work.
http://www.in-call.com/products/cellular-base-adapter/ - tatical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm wondering if you can hook it up to a RJ11 jack on a laptop, manually dial the your ISPs access number, and access the internet? I'm gonna try it :P
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Use a secretary style phone with a shoulder rest to be extra annoying at parties.
We built one last weekend. Click here for pics and our scientific diagram.

- fireproof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was just over at *INSERT GIANT ELECTRONICS STORE* looking for parts to do this same thing, but in a much dumber way -- thanks for devising a better solution!
- DAMU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is pretty freaking cool. I need to make one and use it in my car to freak people out.
dam - utch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very sweet!
- Flyinace2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mike Dun,
Hold a cell phone to your ear for long periods of time (Say talking to the girlfriend) is hard to do. A larger headset would be much more comfortable. - twowords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pointless
- Mike.Dunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know this appeals to the whole "look at what I can do cause i am a nerd" aspect, but why the hell would you do this? Its still a handset. If you want to talk on a handset, just use the phone like its supposed to be used.
- Moose_Head, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will also work with Xbox Live! since the Xbox uses minijack.
- borderpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now I know what to do with that old phone. Thanks for saving me money.
- troilus1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, man -- this is awesome. What would make this *really* cool is if you could embed a bluetooth (or some other wireless) interface into the handset, along with maybe an on/off button. Then you could just leave your cellphone in your pocket, and chat on the awesome huge and heavy retro handset.
Another comment, to those who scoff at this idea and ask why you'd wanna do it -- I've two reasons:
1) Protection. Have you ever been hit with one of those old rotary phone handsets? In the head? I have (I'll explain it to ya sometime later), and it *hurts.* So, if you are jumped by badguys while talking on this retro phone, you can bash them with it.
2) Durability. yesterday, I accidentally sat on my bluetooth headset. I crushed it. I took it apart, but no amount of fiddling would make it work again (not that it worked all that well in the first place). These old phones were built with sturdiness as like a #1 requirement.
--David - Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha, i think it's hillarious. well done. +digg
- Darklighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, "why"?!? Ha! Ha! Nice mod dude, completely useless and definitely will affect your 'coolness' but not in a way that you would think. :) Have fun!
- bastianmk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome!
- Seng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would this let you get around the city ordinances that specifically prohibit talking on cell-phones while driving?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0omg this is the best digg story eva!
- tonaros, on 11/14/2007, -0/+0Nice.

T - AltonMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what that does to the phone's battery life.
- teamds1986, on 08/04/2008, -0/+0Just recently, I finished modding my old Automatic Electric touch tone desk phone to interface with both my Motorola and Samsung cell phones since they obviously take the same 2.5mm connector. By the way, I cannot dial using AE phone. It'd be sweet if I could...
Anyway, it's a full body phone mod, and where the old four-pin (the phone was used by my grandparents in the early 1960s) network cable used to be, a connector for cell phones comes out the back.
Today, I wired a momentary, normally-open button switch in parallel with the microphone in order to mute it, but then I discovered the button doubles as a speech command button on the Samsung phone. Of course, I placed the button near the speaker for easier access. Now it looks like a paging handset at an older supermarket, like Buehler's Fresh Foods, if you live in Northeastern Ohio.
If you're electronically lion-hearted, I suggest you try wiring an NO button in parallel with your handset's mike. It's really cool. - emack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought mine from shop.com. I think it's the greatest thing ever. Don't have to deal with the hot cell phone against my face, worrying about radiation, or that annoying tiny earpiece thing falling out of my ear with the hands-free. I don't know why smaller cell phones are better, anyway--they're hard to hold, etc...so kudos to you! I wish I had the know-how to make my own!
I use mine just for longer convos, and usually keep it at home, since it doesn't fit too easily in my pocket. ;) - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone have the urge to do a ringing crotch episode in public now? I do. I'll use the "generic office telephone" ringtone.
Would a bluetooth version of this be more funny? Imagine seeing a guy walking down the street with a dis-connected phone attached to his ear. - n6mod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The old shoulder-rest idea is brilliant, particularly in a bluetooth version. Gotta hunt up one of those for a "hands-free." Gotta comply with the new laws, ya know. :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0retarded mod.
- elhammond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" trejkaz: A Bluetooth version would definitely be better. Especially if you intentionally frayed the ends of the wires, or even better, actually acquired the handset by tearing one off a real public telephone booth..."
Yes that would be awesome! - lunatix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hevsnt, u're my hero
- jet3004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just bought one of these and it came in the mail today! It's AWESOME!

- somedame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ooh, so cool. I must make one soon for myself.
- shafiq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool website in general.
- ruzel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, I had the same question. Even better, I want the latch that the handset rests on so I can so it on to my backpack or belt. Sweet holster handset!
- cirano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweeeett. I'll try this over the weekend. I have a bulky kyocera QCP6035, this should do very well with that. :)
- thebman990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's pretty beast. I can just imagine walking down the street in a suit with the handset in your jacket pocket and your cell phone ringer on 'old loud phone' or something, and reaching in your jacket and pulling it out to answer.
- Aikon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I made a modern version of this. I have a few Nokia HSU-3 handsets and selling them in Ebay. Unfortunately they are not that cheap.
I opened the handset and connected wires from speaker and microfone to a cable I salvaged from old Ericsson handsfree headset with 2.5mm mini plug. Works well with my HP Ipaq 6365 using adaptor and and directly with my Uniden WDECT cordless phone. The volume is adjustable and I like the modern design. I have not used in public yet but soon. - Tommycat29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awsome & Easy To Use
- room312, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone try this and have problems? took me a while to put together; rj11 wires are too small to work with, and the audio plug isn't that large either. really takes patience, and after all that work, i only have it 75% working.
on my side, i can hear the other person clearly. on their side, they can hear me clearly as well, but there's a major buzzing sound.
chances are, i made a short somewhere. i'm thinking somewhere between the red and yellow wires. black/green on the ground. anyway, what do the red/yellow wires mean? one is outgoing, one is incoming? - Acill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How stupid, why would you want to do this? To raise your "look how stupid I am factor"?
- Coltron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Big is the new Small"
I wonder if it'll come in red? I always wanted a Classic Bat Phone!
