- rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Tank you for cawlin Alienware tech sup ort lane. Thas was Hamed Akmel, how my I halp you?
- unclejesse0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I totally agree with you. Alienware may look cool but it is very expensive.
- MrSlippers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Does this mean "Dell" is finally selling AMD? Or will those get the axe?
- puffarthur, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17If I had to choose, I'd buy an alienware computer over that ugly Dell XPS 600 any day. But then again I would never buy either because they are both insanely overpriced. I think Dell should have gone with offering super cheap barebones systems instead of buying Alienware.
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18Only if you think overpriced rigs are cool.
- constantine11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I don't think marketshare is as important in the high-end gaming market as is "mindshare." When you can afford to spend over $4000 on a computer, having what everyone else does is a drawback.
Dell understands mass production not craftsmanship.
Dell's greed is leading them to do a dumb deal. True, margins are much better in the high-end gaming segment but Dell hasn't recognized that buying Alienware is as sensible as trying to sell Mercedes in a Saturn dealership. - Kev13Dd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10What makes me most upset over this is the fact DELL came out and denied the rumors. Honestly, if it's true and you don't want people to know, just don't say anything about it. But if you expect people to buy your products after you blatently lie to our face... bugger off
-Kevin - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Yes, because, you know, you can't visit Xoxide or somewhere else for a nice case, then go to newegg and fill it with parts, even more customizable than you could with Alienware.
Oh wait.... - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Maybe by stealing parts, otherwise you'll have a hard time making a laptop for a 1/3 of what a discounted Dell would be. If you could even match what a Dell would cost I would be surprised and impressed. Oh, btw, remember, time = money. Browsing sites for weeks looking for a deal on a part needs to factor into your equations, as well as dealing with late/broken parts, and other issues, such as the time to put it all together in a working state.
- constantine11, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Dell intends to maintain Alienware as a "separate brand." Huh?
Is Dell going to prominently display Alienware products on Dell.com? This doesn't seem to make very much sense. Alienware would benefit by having the increased visibility of the Dell homepage, but its products compete against the "high end" Dell offerings like XPS.
XPS is done. I'll give Dell 12 months to manage the transition and the negative feedback, then we'll see Dell introduce a Gamer section on its website which redirects its customer to "Alienware by Dell." - unclejesse0, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Something just doesn't feel right about this acquisition. I can't find anything against it but I still don't like it.
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Heh. I feel your pain but if Dell can lower prices by moving tech support to India, I'm all for it. We're computer geeks right? We can solve our own problems...
Throughout my entire computing history, I dont think I've ever gotten help from a tech support guy. Whether its a US citizen (stoner) or an oblivious foreigner, they're always useless. Message board & google searches seem to always to solve the problem better. - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I wouldnt buy an Alienware machine with a dell label. Dell is awful.
- nmcbean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i took the issue to their live chat:
xx .: Hi, my name is xx.. How may I help you?
nate: hello, is it true that alienware was just bought by dell?
nate: http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/060322/20060322005981.html?.v=1
xx: At this time, Alienware will not comment on any speculative stories or rumors concerning Dell and Alienware's association. While we do believe that news stories like this are ultimately a strong positive reinforcement of the Alienware brand and the company's success, we will not comment on speculation or potential future events.
nate: okay then... thanks - Hakai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm currently in a watch/wait attitude at the moment.....not sure if this will turn out great or bad, but interesting nonetheless.
- beoswulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to say this, a well meaning fiance surprised me with an XPS 400 over the holidays because I was constantly tweaking, breaking, fixing and complaining about my aging homebrew Athlon from 2000. Sure the XPS 400 case is funny as hell looking with the "this is not a handle" front vent ( http://www.monitor.si/images/novice/slika/2005_09_30_M_Dell_XPS400.jpg ) and its embarassing to owna Dell desktop, like having your mom go clothes shopping for you, but the system works like a charm, headache free. Burn a dvd while playing Age of Empires 3 or Fear on the highest possible settings* without any problem. (Yeah Dell configured the system so that the sound card and graphic card were on the same irq but this is Windows... right?) It can't easily upgrade to SLI but I'm not a hardcore gamer and/or wealthy enough to shell out $500x2 for the latest graphic cards. My only regret is the Dell 1905 monitor doesn't support a higher resolution than 1280x1024. But for 19", landscape mode, a decent refresh time and $180 it was worth it! I just hope Dell doesn't change their unspoken "Keep the customer happy" tech support policy of replacing items without too many questions. I don't plan on spending a dime on this box for repairs. I don't miss building it again, dealing with hardware failures while burning in, undocumented incompatibilities etc. I'm getting lame. Anyways it makes more sense for Dell to buy another market share whore like Alienware than say Hypersonic.. Just my 2 cents rant.
- VadimKatchkakov, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Both models are costing too very much - with all this overpriced PC I was prefer to build from scratch my own at third price!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That only works for desktops not laptops
- raptorGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bitch all you want, I'm betting the support for both is in India.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Imagine Dell's Famous coupons on Alienware systems
- Litzau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3point well made, i happen to own an alienware, and its by far a top end system,,why buy a system instead of build? b/c its a pain in the ass,,,search for prices, find what you want, prices change, worry about some shady ad or website not standing up to what they advertise, having to build it, then no warranty, yeah i built the systems when i couldnt afford to have someone else do it for me, but now i can afford that,,,so why do it myself if i dont have to?
- iamcdn28, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually the cost of making the machines should drop a bit since they will now get to use Dells buying power when it comes to the parts, thus increase the profit. I don't believe they will drop the price either.
- jmiller520, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly. I haven't called tech support since 1998
- crackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes I agree. I see Dell keeping Alienware as its own brand and finally be able to make some smokin AMD computers. hopefully.
- chicksdigme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Alienware does not emphasize on quality, then they cant have a sustainable business and could not have remained profitable. Not many ppl are stupid enough to spend $2000+ to buy a piece of junk.
With $2000+, you'd expect quality. Like IBM Thinkpads. You can drop your Thinkpads from waist height, it will still work fine. Same cannot be said about my Dell 700m and 600m. I had an IBM T22, though it was expensive, it was extremely durable :) - shirashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh no, Alienware has been abducted!
Arggg.... - eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8There'll be no management/label change apparently, just the business end.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Portuguese / Brazilian : http://www.htk.com.br/noticia.php?noticia=319

http://www.htk.com.br/ - btipling, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5It doesn't look like prices will drop either, as they're going to keep seperate marketing and adminstrative personnel. Usually you merge and reduce staff to improve the margins or reduce prices, but since they're not doing that, I don't get what they're doing other than buying marketshare.
- infectbda, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I just don't get why Dell spent so much money on getting into the gaming market with their own machines when they could have just bought Alienware a long time ago, and saved themselves some of the trouble. I wonder if Dell will keep designing gaming machines in-house, or just start using Alienware to do it instead. Interesting deal.
- search, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Never heard of Clevo
- sputza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I own an Alienware Notebook and love it. I agree that Alienware is very expensive but its all about the quality. I build my own desktops but when it comes to notebooks, Alienware will out do anything out there.
I am worried about the customer service once Dell takes over. I know so many people that have bought Dell and got screwed over when they needed help. If Alienware remains the same quality product with great service, I will buy my next notebook from them again. - yoshu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, alienware should get a benefit from the purchasing power of dell. But will they pass that on to the customer? It will be interesting to see if alienware's prices do drop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Say goodbye to the line of XPS.
- cheshire76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Free down-grade to 15" 1024/768 flat panel LCD AND DVD-ROM/CD burner with every Dell Alien you buy.
- keane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hmm... maybe you should try showing them the press release on their site
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/pressoffice/en/2006/2006_03_22_rr_001 - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dell is struggling. They're XPS line can't cut it for the power users out there. The PU's dont equate dell with coolness. That is why they have been forced to lower prices & specs on these systems. Now, with Alienware they can reap the reward and inherit the needed cool factor in order to gain the power user market. They can still sell their bottom end stuff for $399 AND get the cash from crazy's that feel priviledged to have the latest, greatest, flare in pc's. Alienware won on this deal because they can ride the Dell wave before it crashes. I just cant understand how people pay for those systems for a few fps more.
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've never had to deal with dell for a home machine. but i repair laptops for a college. with the online system they have set up it it extreamly easy to get replacement parts and we recieve the replacement usually the next day. their tech support has been nothing but helpful to me.
- eth3l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Dell actually purcahses Alienware my guess is that Dell is not going to swallow up Alienware and turn them into Dells - like (AT&T did with SBC). Dell wants to make money from a portion of the high-end gmaing rig systems. Most consumers dont trust the Dell name on High-end rigs. So if Dell can "own the rights" to Alienwares profits it will have that portion of the marketshare. Its a pretty good business move by Dell.
Its not like current Dell employees and or policies are now going to take over Alienware. Dell will just own all shares of the company. They will keep the Alienware badge/brand to maintan consumer confidence. Dell will be smart to keep them separate. - ScnnrDrkly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This aquisition just wasn't making sense to me everytime I heard about it. Just now, as I'm eating and reading, it finally dawned on me.
Dell is small margin, high volume and Alienware is the exact opposite. Dell's earnings and market share have gotta be order(s) of magnitude bigger than Alien so it's not about increasing either of those.
So where else do the companies differ? Dell is about cheaper, commidity parts and Alien is more about small yield, bleeding edge hardware. So what? Alien will become Dell's R&D unit. Within a small customer base, Dell can test what does and doesn't work, what sells well, and what generates more/less tech calls and warranty claims. This information can then be used to better plan what hardware will go into future offerings at Dell.
Then again, maybe it's just the curry chicken I'm eating. - skylog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2while what this will ultimately mean for the computing world is unknown, it may indeed have some far-reaching effects. i see this as a "back door" for dell, one which finally allows them access to AMD chips, while at the same time keeping all those cushy intel deals in place. of course, only time will tell.
- jtjdt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My favorite part about alienware is that you can OVERCLOCK UNDER WARRANTY!! Just press the up and down buttons on the front of the case and increase your clockspeed! Definitely an added perk.
- AndrewMayne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3In Dell's defense, they never officially denied the take over rumor. The only comment I saw was from a *New Zealand* rep who was probably not in the loop for what would be a top-level corporate decision - as was pointed out by myself and others when the story of Dell "denying" the rumor was posted on Digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is a joke. Dude you're getting an Alienware? I don't think so. The worse thing that Dell could do is force Alienware to become like them....they could remove AMD from Alienware's lineup.
- kryptogrowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it would be better for dell if they just had alienware design all their boxes.
- thepaulm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What makes you think Alienware emphasizes quality?
Alienware emphasizes using the newest components and cool looking cases. In actuality they build stuff that doesn't work, and they don't know how to support it.
My experience with an Alienware computer was purely horrible.
I do have a Dell XPS now, and guess what - no issues at all. - giggins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Alienware maybe more expensive but at the end of the day it is a better gaming PC then dell.
- londonboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well we all know now that dell OEM boards are gonna be in the dellinware machines now and dell have much better customer service support then alienware.. glad alienware have sold out thay but my friend to hell and back on tech support my opinion is dell might get rid of the xps machines and replace it with dellinware computers. I'm thinking thay sold them out because 1 less company to compete with it's a consumers thing maybe ?
- xswag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've never owned an Alienware computer but if Dell is buying them. You can bet that your Tech Support calls will be forwarded to Asia or India. I've owned a few Dells and its really made me learn how to fix any problems myself. Tech Support for Dell is the worst. I really don't have any complaints about the computers but I also don't suggest people buy one. I've learned that you should "Build Your Own"!
