- supakoopa, on 02/25/2009, -5/+38Dance Dance Revolution 3? I thought there was more than that...
- Velocity211, on 02/25/2009, -0/+19I can't believe how cheap RAM is now. I remember when I built my PC I coughed up over 150 for 2GBs of RAM.
- jordantneff, on 02/25/2009, -1/+19I feel very ashamed of myself. When I read DDR3 for some reason I automatically thought of dance dance revolution... time to go stand in the corner
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -0/+14I always want the best performance for my money. I'm going to wait until Core i7 comes down in price later this year and then I will also pair it with cheaper DDR 3. I can't wait to make my new computer!
- TheDudeDean, on 09/13/2009, -0/+13I was just looking at MoBo today. It was odd seeing six ram slots.
- mbfielding, on 02/25/2009, -0/+11Gotta love Moore's Law.
- superppl, on 02/25/2009, -0/+11Seriously though, how does DDR3 fare against DDR2? Is it a huge, screaming, blow your mind out deal (50%+ performance increase)? Is it more of meh(~10%)?
I can understand that different procs will affect performance, but then you can bench those too with CPU bound applications. If there's little difference with the CPU benches, and huge with the memory, then ya the memory speed is a big deal. But if theres also a big difference between the procs, then maybe the difference in performance is from the procs and not the mem.
But seeing as how you would need to use the new procs and DDR3 to get that better performance, it might not matter anyway. - PhillyOC, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7Good advice. Of course don't get the slowest and cheapest RAM you can get, but if you have the toss-up of getting 4GB of DDR3 1333 or 2GB of DDR3 2000 for the same price, go for the 4GB.
- Dougman82, on 02/25/2009, -1/+8So basically, it really doesn't matter what speed/quality of DDR3 you buy, nor does it matter if you go with a single/dual/triple channel setup as there are minimal performance gains to be made in any of these setups.
Basically, just get the quantity of RAM for your needs and don't worry about memory performance (unless you're overclocking, of course). - raptor87, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7I was just looking at some old new egg invoices I paid 179.99 for
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 500 (PC 4000)
in 2006 - brainnovate, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7you are not as smart as you think you are
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7Just because your too stupid to see a good informative story that helps a buyer, you are gonna automatically assume the are buying diggs? Buy some crayons and go color.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6you will be pleased. It kicks ass :)
- sleeknerve, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6wow, i have the exact same thing in my account....
I hope my password wasnt that hard to crack - PhillyOC, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7Tom's is good for his graphics card benchmarks and reviews, but I have seen a lot of shady ***** go on there over the years. He has been accused of inflating performance findings on several occasions. (By "he" I mean the website, of course)
- bludragn0, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6This corner's getting crowded.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5So a 64 bit OS is a good idea then?
- grantmoore3d, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5Getting the highest clockspeed RAM is pointless. I recall reading that the only noticeable application for such ludicrous speed is when doing heavy video editing previews. Though, I've got an i7 with 1333 DDR3 Triple Channel RAM, and it's already frighteningly fast with After Effects. The extra money would only give a minimal improvement.
- Ricochetbiscuit, on 02/25/2009, -1/+6You're kidding right? Tom's has had a reputation over the years for being biased to the point of accusation that they are paid off. And what makes you think that weeks ago, there were the same types of kits available in the market as their are now? So, just because this article isn't the first, it's not relevant? Hello? I actually think it presents the performance data in such a way that the buyer can make a better, more informed buying decision with the proper perspective of speed versus latency. Stop trashing good info for weak reasoning at best.
- Darksoul, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5Seriously the prices on all the parts need to come down more for i7 systems before people start buying it just costs way to much money you wont find more and more people buying till newer versions of i7's chips are made and come out at lower prices. I mean yeah they are great systems but money is hard these days alot of people including myself have just finally put together core2duo systems. I would love to have the best of the best but that's not possible right now. It will need to come down in price more on the memory, cpu & ram before I even think about buying it will probably be a good year before I upgrade again.
The good thing though is on my new comp I just built I thank ahead and bought a nice big case, a good power supply and other stuff so it wont hit so hard when I need to upgrade again. These days your wasting your money if you don't think ahead to new upgrades for your computer parts. - MrBucket777, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5Not smart. You aren't running triple channel with only 4gb.
- dchizek, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4Awesome article. Need more of these technical and thorough articles on Digg
- AmazingSteve, on 02/25/2009, -1/+5Yup, just built mine 5 weeks ago using a 940 and 12 gig ram. Fast as all hell.
- jdoo, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3hmm.... maybe i shouldn't have just built a system around an e8400....
- brainnovate, on 02/25/2009, -1/+4no one said you *had* to digg it
- xxpor, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3130nm? what is this? 2002?
- mbfielding, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Moore's law has expanded since its original definition to mean something like "performance doubles every 2 years". Plus I'm sure the increase in transistor density has had a significant impact on RAM as well as CPUs.
- Gizza, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3But you can get an extra 2FPS in Crysis!!!!11!
- bmystry, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Sooooo... I should buy the Corsair Dominator GT? Alright!
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -2/+4Didn't say it was a bad story. Just read it, pretty solid.
But Toms had a triple channel memory roundup weeks ago with all the same information and much more.
So there's no reason to digg this one, offers no new information and, to me at least, is outdated already. - Ricochetbiscuit, on 02/26/2009, -0/+2HappyScrappy sir (or mam), you are speaking completely out of your ass. :)
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -1/+3So did that story get the exposure on Digg that this one did? You think your creative way to downplay a story that helps others is the way to travel and be successful on Digg?
- sleeknerve, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2This is really informative article about some of the things in memory you dont consider, Dugg.
- Ceryn1126, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1They just got DDR X at the arcade where I live in Japan. The X is for 10 years of DDR not it being the 10th mix.
Of the main mixes (in Japan) i think there are:
DDR 1st-6th
DDR Max (7th)
DDR Max 2 (8th)
DDR Extreme (9th)
DDR Supernova (10th)
DDR Supernova 2 (11th)
DDR X (12th)
Those are the main ones not counting Solo or Disney mixes / foreign / home releases. - headband, on 02/26/2009, -0/+1the i7 has a built in ddr3 controller....no way to use it with ddr2
- mister711, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1I paid $150 for 4 MB of RAM back in 1996
- BugMeNot2, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Maybe, but at least the content is decent. The digg front page doesn't get enough tech news anyway, so more tech stories are always welcome.
- KiraDnote, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Benchmark tests are only 10% slower with the cheapest memory vs the fastest memory. That tells me all I need to know.
- Ricochetbiscuit, on 02/25/2009, -1/+2Exactly...
- mashupXXL, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1Am I the only one that is sick of websites not properly labeling graphs? Needs some professionalism. Jeesh.
- SteveMax, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Why would you pay 100% more for a 5% performance increase? If you pay 100% more, you'd expect ~50% better performance. In this case, it's smarter to use the money on something else.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1watch everything else Surferess submits. Front page guarantee.
- borninda818, on 02/25/2009, -2/+2You can make your computer and pair it with cheap ddr2, upgrade when you have the money.
- ButterLoyalist, on 02/25/2009, -4/+4***** yeah! I have a Core i7 and 4GB of DDR3 Ram!
- tonaro, on 02/25/2009, -0/+0Core i7 is coooool ! i want one but i cant afford *haha
- Gizza, on 02/25/2009, -2/+2What does Moore's Law have to do with RAM?
- HappyScrappy, on 02/25/2009, -2/+1Save your money. I have a Core i7, X58 and 6GB of RAM. It costs a lot and it IS fast. But Core i5 will be out soon, and it'll be a lot cheaper with virtually identical performance. It'll only require dual-channel RAM for top performance and it will be paired with a lot cheaper chipset than X58, and probably one that isn't made on the power-sucking 130nm process that X58 is.
