- ProjectGSX, on 08/22/2008, -11/+200Great article. I love my iPhone for sure, but it really broke the "It just works!" opinion of Apple products.
- rootnik, on 08/23/2008, -6/+175From the article: "When the Playstation 3 got some new firmware that bricked a number of consoles, Sony didn't keep mum on the subject. They rushed a new firmware out in a matter of days and kept in touch with reporters about what was going on. They even apologized: "We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you and appreciate your understanding and continued support." Apple hasn't acknowledged the iPhone issues to the press, let alone saying sorry for them. Because saying sorry would mean admitting that they screwed up."
You know you have screwed up when somebody... _anybody_ compares your PR efforts to Sony's and you end up on the bad end of it. - Stangs55, on 08/22/2008, -43/+167He says everything I've ever wanted to say to those kiddos looking for their identity in a computer company as they sip their venti frappucino in $200 torn jeans and skin tight t-shirts at starbucks using their $3000 MacPro to do the only thing they'll ever do with it: IM and email.
Well said. - specialK16, on 08/23/2008, -27/+103"And all this time I thought I bought my $4000 Mac Pro so that I could make 70,000 a year editing movies with Final Cut Pro"
You just proved you are a pretentious idiot, thanks. - inactive, on 08/23/2008, -10/+82You're pretentious for "casually" mentioning how much money you make in a thread where it's completely irrelevant.
- SkoGoody, on 08/22/2008, -29/+95I couldn't have wrote this article better myself.
Even though I did early adopt and buy the 1G iPhone... it was my first ever Apple product. At first, I like the blogger, thought of switching to a Mac with my next laptop... But having the iPhone made me finally pay attention to what Apple was doing. And you know what, Apple was doing exactly what you say here. Only telling parts of information that makes them look good and hiding everything else. Or even better... Locking their entire systems down to what King Jobs sees fit. What better proof then having to hack(jailbreak) a phone to make it awesome. Or more proof, the "Destroy an App" feature because Apple doesn't want it on your phone. And the best yet... Releasing things that are standard features on most phones as "groundbreaking" new features on an iPhone.
I love my jailbroken 1G iPhone as much as the next guy... but honestly, I will NEVER buy another Apple product EVER again. I can't wait to see what Google and Android bring to the table. - Spanktacular, on 08/23/2008, -36/+96My Blackberry 8830? It just works.
Oh, and I don't need Mr. Jobs's approval to install any application I want...
How's that tethering thing working out for you Apple dickwads? - jlyanez, on 08/22/2008, -59/+115I love this article!!!!! All apple Fan boy's live i a dream world!!!
- acurrie, on 08/22/2008, -7/+55You don't know what you're talking about... Now if you'll excuse me my unicorn is double-parked ;-)
- Timmmm, on 08/23/2008, -5/+44> I couldn't have wrote this article better myself.
Haha indeed not! - DJNephilim, on 08/23/2008, -9/+48Obviously your grammar lives in a dream world too.
- EntropyFan, on 08/23/2008, -14/+52I thought MobileMe did that already.
Or OSX? I mean, it couldn't even play a DVD when it was launched, and it was years of development before even Apple that it didn't suck so much they made it the default, shipping OS.
And 2 paid upgrades?
Ya, if you have any hope in 'just works', you are a hopeless fan boy. - jaythewise, on 08/23/2008, -16/+53Only apple product I have is my bloody nano.....
Thing is wacko, suddenly turns off and freezes all the time. it is my 2nd replacement as well.
***** thing doesnt work! ***** it we'll do it live! - Lownin, on 08/23/2008, -22/+58I'm starting to get really sick of this and feel like venting a little, so I will.
I read all the time about how Apple users are pompus, egotistical "know it alls" who do nothing but talk about how terrible Windows is.
But I've found something completely different.
Since I bought an Apple laptop a year ago, I've gotten nothing but crap from friends and co-workers. They diss on Apple, its user base, and my laptop all the time. People I've never met assume I'm the Apple user stereotype, and treat me as such.
I don't push Apple kit on others. I don't go out of my way to berate Windows beyond what is the status quo at the software company that I work at. I deffinetly don't talk bad about linux. At home, I have my Apple laptop, an arch Linux server hosting my media, and a Vista desktop PC. They all work great for me.
I've also never met this stereotypical Apple user who I've described. I'm sure he exists, but my point is that he's nowhere near as common as people make him out to be.
Since I got an iPhone, these Apple bashers have come out of the woodwork.
"Why the hell did you spend so much on a phone? There is this cheaper phone that..."
"Didn't you already have an iPod?"
"Your phone has a crappy camera. Mine has a 3 mega pixel and records video. It also cost less"
I don't care. I mean, that's cool you have a nice phone too. Enjoy it. I'm enjoying mine.
All I'm asking is if you find yourself consistantly bashing Apple users, please please PLEASE just ask yourself "Does this really affect me?". If the answer is no, please... stop bashing us. Most of us just enjoy their products like you enjoy yours. - shanomaq, on 08/23/2008, -4/+39I gotta say though, Safari on the iPhone crashes way too often. Nothing like waiting for a page to load only to have it close abruptly.
- cotaskmemalloc, on 08/23/2008, -5/+38Leopard wasn't a disaster like the iPhone 2.0 software was. Yeah, my computer ran a little slower, but overall, I've been very happy with Leopard. I like it more than Tiger. But I won't touch MobileMe with a 10 foot pole. Too many horror stories.
But the iPhone 2.0 software was really a huge, huge step back for Apple. People like "peestandingup" say things like "Maybe Apple should stop trying to be great at everything", but the problems that riddle the iPhone now should not have ever made it out of development.
My phone crashes occasionally while I'm swiping my finger to take a call. Seriously? What the ***** is that? Did they test this ***** at all during development?
The UI responsiveness is atrocious. Did they really miss that? How in Satan's glorious name could you miss button clicks taking *5-10 seconds* to respond? This isn't 1992 anymore. This is 2008 and the iPhone is more powerful than most computers were before the year 2000. The bugs on the iPhone are just unacceptable, and really makes me question Apple's sanity.
And that's just the software! I'm on my 4th goddamn iPhone replacement at the moment. The screens on each one of my previous iPhones have ***** out on me, becoming all discolored until a good portion of the screen had a yellow tint to it. Each time I take it in they swap it for a new phone without question. That says to me that Apple has seen this before - how many times is anyone's guess, but I'm willing to be a lot.
So at the moment I'm telling anyone and everyone I know who is considering an iPhone to stay the hell away until Apple gets their ***** together. - Rikkochet, on 08/23/2008, -8/+33Yet he's hilarious because he announced his salary in a crowd that probably generally outearns him (for the 25+ Digg crowd).
- peestandingup, on 08/23/2008, -9/+33So did MobileMe, so did Leopard, so did the new iMacs, so did, hmm, are you seeing a trend here?
Maybe Apple should stop trying to be great at everything. - EntropyFan, on 08/23/2008, -4/+28I have used OSX since it was released.
I work at a graphics arts company. We kept trying and trying every little update.
It ***** sucked. Especially when Photoshop finally worked on it, and our asset management software didn't.
Classic? Like a ***** band aid on a gunshot wound.
And at least XP had the ability to play DVD's out of the box ( if you had a DVD player, you had 3'rd party drivers on a disk with the machine). With OSX you booted back into OS 9.
A totally ***** shameful example of releasing software, that makes Vista look golden in comparison.
Too bad the fan-kiddies choose to not remember.
- sirflibble, on 08/23/2008, -2/+24Here on the Optus network in Australia, I've had my iphone for a month and don't have any of the reception issues that the US is complaining about. I have a little lag when loading up apps etc for 5 or so seconds that's annoying, but that's about it to be honest.
One has to wonder if the reception issues are AT&T and not the iphone itself though. - vat0r, on 08/23/2008, -0/+20I live in my Dad's basement.
- phoomp, on 08/23/2008, -1/+21Cranky Windows Guy says "Apple's iPhone Bugs Stopped Me From Switching to a Mac".
I'm certainly an Apple customer. I have a MacBook, an iPod Touch, and AppleTV, a 3rd Gen iPod, a 4th Gen iPod, a 1st Gen Shuffle, a 2nd Gen Shuffle, an old iBook, and a *really* old PowerBook.
But, I'm seriously considering never buying from Apple again after the woes with the iPhone 2.0 software (which affect my iPod Touch), MobileMe (which I don't use, but have heard much about), as well as buggy updates for the AppleTV (which don't really make news because nobody bought the thing).
Apple has lost it's shine. The reality distortion field has extended from the customer and into Apple Product Development which seems to believe that Apple can do no wrong, so much so that they don't seem to be trying to do *right* anymore. - ndroot, on 08/22/2008, -14/+34I've actually had a great experience with my iPhone so far. (All 5 days of it) No bugs that I've noticed and it does seem to "just work". However, it's when I try to sync it with my computer that the whole Apple fantasy just unravels.
I'm a geek. I know computers and can normally figure things out without having to read directions, etc. Being an Apple product, I figured this same logic would apply. It was infuriating trying to unravel the mess of syncing between different computers, authorizing what, where. Why doesn't this song I just bought show up here? Why doesn't the ringtone I just made for my wife on the laptop work anymore? I made it on the laptop, now it won't sync to her desktop. Has to clear the library? What? =|
Now, before I get flamed for not reading the manual,...that's kind of the point. I was expecting to be able to jump into the experience and have it work. Or at the very least, have it easily spelled out for me. I'm realizing now that I need to do a bit more reading and research before jumping straight into iTunes and having a good experience. - China08, on 08/23/2008, -26/+45Stupid Apple fanboys.
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 08/23/2008, -3/+21You're only pulling down $70K a year for editing movies? Sheesh. Better union up, buddy.
- javaroast, on 08/23/2008, -4/+22From your description it appears like they have stopped trying to be great for awhile now.
- Jondi10, on 08/23/2008, -6/+22Can't that be said for any type of fan boy, or girl, (Apple, PC, X-Box, Nintendo, etc)?
- max1018, on 08/23/2008, -8/+23I'm with you man. People are like "I hope you are happy with your $300 ***** phone that can't even do MMS". I chose it, I knew it's flaws, so why the ***** should you give a damn what I use?
- inactive, on 08/23/2008, -2/+17My kids nanos freeze up (refuse to turn off etc) all the time as well. Funny how some fanboy just had to digg you down for stating a fact isn't it? lol
- asspants, on 08/23/2008, -4/+19you said it works fine, but then you go on to explain that you had to jailbreak it, and netshare doesnt work -- so that means that it doesnt work fine. the OP's 8830? he didnt have to jailbreak. it just works.
- Juntistik, on 08/23/2008, -3/+17Clak, you've been ALL over this comment section responding to negative comments about the iPhone and Apple, I must ask...
Do you truly not think you're a fanboy? Honestly, you're on a rampage. - inactive, on 08/23/2008, -1/+15I'll give you some of the productivity software but, some of those games are really old , and I don't see a single exclusive title, so I must know, what is your point?
- voetsjoeba, on 08/23/2008, -1/+15Notice the use of the word "seem".
- cotaskmemalloc, on 08/23/2008, -3/+15Have fun being an idiot.
- mishaneah, on 08/23/2008, -14/+26That's an awful lot of whining for a computer guy that decided to buy a cutting edge device. This is just a rant about Apple's Public Relations policy. It has nothing to do with his iPhone. And the whole "I was all set to buy a mac computer and now I won't for ever-ever and I hate Apple" is so 1997. Trolls have changed their business model dude, try to keep up.
- mikestro, on 08/23/2008, -6/+16As slick as Apple is, Windows phones don't have a kill switch like that. And their API, SDK, and documentation are far better than Apples.
- inactive, on 08/23/2008, -5/+15So the new iPhone is like the Xbox 360 of the phone world. Cheap hardware rushed to market and costing the company buckets of cash just to keep up with the failure rate.
Note to Apple and MS: There is such a thing as "too early" or "unfinished". - Daniel591992, on 08/23/2008, -2/+12"Apple has already released two firmware patches"
..THAT DON'T HELP! - Rikkochet, on 08/23/2008, -2/+12That's not criticism. That's a juvenile ad hominem attack. I see you're at -16. See you at the bottom.
- Sketchcast, on 08/23/2008, -1/+10I've never understood the blind fanboyism of Apple users. Admittedly OSX has a highly polished user interface, and a much better software bundle than Windows, which is fine I guess if you're only interested in using apple software. But I can't for the life of me figure out where OSX got it's reputation for stability? Applications crash constantly, Airport utility drops my wifi connection like once an hour, requiring me to disable and re-enable it, I get kernel panics every so often, which is funny because my 5 year old Windows rig has never thrown a BSOD despite being absolutely neglected maintenance wise.
Also why are Firefox and Thunderbird so much faster on said 5 year old P4 /w XP than they are on my shiny new Core 2 Duo Macbook?
Anyhow, I love my macbook, it's compact, light, and has a battery that lasts forever, but I call into question the intelligence of anyone who thinks that OSX is superior to XP in any area other than UI design. - shanomaq, on 08/23/2008, -20/+29You are the reason why people hate mac using iDiots.
- sirflibble, on 08/23/2008, -4/+13I love what people use as reasons they didn't get it.
"It doesn't do MMS" - I've sent 1 MMS in 5 years. I can live without that feature.
"It can't do video calls" - That's ok, I've never seen or heard of anyone actually doing video calls.
"It has a 2MP camera" - Which is good enough for the random pub shots I will be using it for on the rare occasion when I absolutely must take a photo. - ndroot, on 08/23/2008, -0/+9lol, good point. I appreciate Apple's software fixes, but I appreciate companies even more so when they're completely transparent about what's going on.
I never (ever) thought I'd think that about Sony. But the PS3 is surprisingly open in that regard. - TeacherOfHeroes, on 08/23/2008, -0/+9"I have [...] an iPod Touch, [...] a 3rd Gen iPod, a 4th Gen iPod, a 1st Gen Shuffle, a 2nd Gen Shuffle[...]"
o.O - I'm a bit confused, why do you have 5 mp3 players? - MaynardJK, on 08/23/2008, -3/+12@max1018
That is the point. You don't get any extra quality for all that money. - phoomp, on 08/23/2008, -0/+9Yep. It's sad. But, by the time each was replaced, they value had dropped so my they weren't worth selling, so they got repurposed into the home stereo.
The Touch is my personal player and also serves as car stereo.
4th Gen powers my home stereo (got it for $50 almost new ... couldn't pass up that deal).
3th Gen is docked to the bedroom stereo (my first iPod).
2nd Gen Shuffle is my wife's.
1st Gen Shuffle was a door prize and is used by my daughter. - Mothrog, on 08/23/2008, -2/+11"I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy or anything, just an experienced computer user."
If you can't keep a Windows machine in decent working order, you may be experienced, but you don't know much. - oMeSSiaHo, on 08/23/2008, -2/+10Why do you spell Windows like that? Is it supposed to be insulting?! I though Apple people were creative art types. Surely you can come up with something better then that!
- p3ngwin, on 08/23/2008, -1/+9lol
- phoomp, on 08/23/2008, -1/+9They've release two firmware patches, which have barely seemed to have any effect. They won't even tell us what the firmware is patching.
As for being "a bit buggy", I would say having 3G performance not even close to competing phones is *alot buggy*. -
