- jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -24/+188Alright, I'm gonna get dugg down hardcore for this but,
The iPod can't share ANY cookies. - vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -25/+181cute, whimsical but arbitrary
microsoft bought a nice piece of animation and tacked their logo on at the end
why would they confuse their branding strategy?
besides, if the ad was honest, the girl would only be able to give the cookie 3 times, and as the people walked down the street their cookie would disappear - GnuTzu, on 10/12/2007, -17/+147Yeah, but it doesn't show how the shared piece of cookie disappears after only a couple of nibbles.
- rjpaez, on 10/12/2007, -20/+133Yeah it does, they're sharing cookies... like you could share music.
- waza8501, on 10/12/2007, -11/+54No indication of the zune being a music player, unlike the nano ads, "listen to the music".
- Hale, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43@ GnuTzu
You mean your cookies magically reappear after you eat them? I think the cookie analogy is a very good analogy for Zune file sharing. The girl breaks her cookie in half and gives one half to the other person while keeping half to herself. Her half grows back to a full cookie while the recipient of the other half eats theirs and nothing grows back. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43Does the cookie have DRM too?
- Dewars, on 10/12/2007, -36/+74@jdb252
The Zune can't share cookies either. - ironicsans, on 10/12/2007, -8/+44If you already know about the Zune, this ad tells you nothing. And if you don't already know about the Zune, this ad tells you nothing. Except that maybe the Zune is some sort of cookie.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Direct link to youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjaOruj0dXc - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28What a cookie sharing whore she just gave it out to anybody!
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31Exactly. I get the whole "sharing cookie, sharing music" thing, but this ad won't sell DAPs. Anyone could make really great-looking, creative ads, but unless they have a cool product they often "suffer" from informative advertising.
- dimsum05, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Oh I get it. You can actually see the DRM part in there if you really look at it.
The person giving the cookies has the master cookie! She can eat as much as she wants, but the cookie will just reappear. Unlimited satisfaction.
The recipients, however, get a sample of the cookie, that does not regenerate (They do only get half, right?). So once they finish the cookie, that's it! Then they could buy the cookie the girl has... like a sample. Limited Satisfaction.
...I think. - sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31It's called building brand awareness.
- washingtonydc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+281984 for one.
- soudak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I think TYPING like THIS is REALLY LAME and I DON'T care WHAT you HAVE to SAY when YOU type LIKE THIS.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25In Marketing, showing something that isn't obvious often garners more results than an ad that says "OUR PRODUCT DOES THIS!!!"
For example, the oddity of the ad has made it to the front page of Digg. Will anybody else think to themselves WTF is it about this product and magical cookies? Sure they will. Will anybody be shopping for portable music devices and get that light bulb go on over their head when the sales guy at Best Buy tells them about file sharing? Sure they will.
Many ad campaigns start out arbitrary, and drill down into the product's features and benefits over time. Its a time proven strategy. Who knows if it will work this time, as it is just one little part of Microsoft's strategy for marketing Zune. - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Who is going to buy the zune because it can play music? There are thousands of other things out there than can play music, some which look nicer, some which are cheaper. You advertise why your product is unique. The zune is unique because it involves the limited ability to share music with friends.
- matrixclown, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24looks like it was made by Tim Burton
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Once you eat the cookie, It's gone.
- Platina, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19yeah you could just take three bites
- jialuolu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14A lot of people don't know what a Zune is yet, period. There's no way that they could watch this commercial then understand that you could share songs wirelessly between Zunes
- Quantic, on 10/12/2007, -16/+28@rjpaez
And yes of course the average consumer will infer immediately that because a girl is sharing her cookie over and over that the Zune has the capability of sharing its music wirelessly with other Zune's. Yes of course... Cool commercial, but has almost nothing to actually relate to the zune. - ArnoldTPants, on 10/12/2007, -16/+26What Apple ads are artistic?
- GNUGNOME, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@simX
I dont want to seem like a microsoft kid, but the new windows media player does have library sharing. - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Yeah but it gets people asking 'ooh what's the Zune thing?' and then they ask about it, talk about it, find out about it...
That's how ads like this work - akifbayram, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18The Apple ads are very simple and get to the point, while on the other hand, the Microsoft ads looked very complicated.
Many digg users such as wstrucke didn't understand it.
They made a nice animation and stuck the Zune logo on the end. - Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Anyone else find it strange they chose a song with the lyric 'She's only got one magic trick' or something, for the advert that is only showing one capability of the Zune?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I like the ad. I'm not in marketing and I can't say if it's more or less effective at selling the product as iPod ads but I still think it's pretty cool.
- impulsiveboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Enjoyable ad, but I gotta know: did those people ralph up her cookie three days later?
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20In Soviet Russia the cookie eats you.
- bobbyi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15"Anyone could make really great-looking, creative ads"
Really? Why do they pay so much to advertising agency if anyone can do that? - Dewars, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12After watching that ad, my question is, where can I get some Zune Chocolate Chip Cookies? My local supermarket only had Chips Ahoy.
- trinityrubicon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11There's a big difference between Apple's and Microsoft's advertising.
When an Apple commercial ends, at least the consumer knows what the product DOES. - woody56292, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11...not everybody likes ipods....
- woody56292, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10thank you, i don't know why people are so obsessed with ragging on the zune's sharing feature. The only reason they are mad is because they can't share their "drm-free" music.
Unless digg is made up of indie bands and artists, you probably don't have much free music you want to share. You have pirated music and are mad that you can't share it with all your pirating friends. Music costs money, and Microsoft didn't get into the DMP business to support piracy, so stop complaining about it.
3 times is enough to decide if you like the song and want to buy it or not. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Wait, 1984... wasn't that ad two decades ago?
- Kev585, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Apple ads have been lacking for awhile.
- RevoltPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's strange to me that if someone gives you half a cookie, you don't eat it right away, but let it sit around the house for three days.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I wish they'd found a more artistic name for the actual player.
"Zune" sounds like a children's show on PBS or something. - The_Larch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Right. It shoots brightly colored streaks of light!
The Zune can't! - Kookami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Urge to illegally download baked goods rising...
- vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13what's your definition of "artistic"?
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Cool. I like the part where they all get home, and 3 days later, the cookies she passed out are mysteriously gone.
- aphexmandelbrot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I was under the impression that unless you reviewed products for a magazine, there is no reasonable explanation to owning a Zune.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I do like how artistic the Zune ad is, but I don't think it's a very effective ad. Most people are going to watch that and say "OK what the hell was that?" While when they watch an iPod ad they know EXACTLY what it's for (not just because the iPod is so popular, but it's obvious in the ads that it's a music player). The iPod ads are usually full of energy, whereas this Zune ad is quite slow-paced and dreary. I like how artistic it is, but doubt it'll be a very effective campaign.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's more like Eastern Germany's favorite cat and mouse cartoon: Worker and Parasite.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -17/+23@ GnuTzu
I was going to make a similar observation. It's more like sharing 3 cookies, but ideally, one wants to give somebody the whole store. This is similar to the OpenOffice sales pitch.

Take the test drive and _keep the car_. - brlittle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8See, here's thing. When I see an iPod ad, I want to bob my head and tap my feet. Seeing the alleged Zune ad...made me wonder if I'd had a bad hit of acid, frankly. Maybe it was something in the cookie she was handing out.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I liked the ad, but I'm still not buying a Zune
