- rocketnick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17actually if I'm not mistaken core two duo is far more efficient than its predecessors, i.e. it runs cooler with less voltage across the core
- corneliousjd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16No laptops are meant to bet set on a lap, thats why they're called "notebooks"
- TalkieT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Um, is it just me or is there absolutely no conclusion or discussion of the results?
- chan0429, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9From the article: "The other difference is that EM64T support has been added to Core 2 Duo, though until the 64-bit version of Windows appears this will only be useful to a limited number of people."
It seems like the reviewer never heard that Windows XP Pro has a 64-bit version that's already available; it is.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/default.mspx
With that said... it's still only useful to a limited number of people. - Hutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7FINALLY some information about this, I just rented a laptop for the beginning of the school year because I wanted to wait for these :D
- Hutch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well as I said, I either had to rent one for a month or be forced into buying a laptop that I wouldn't be happy with in 2 weeks time. ( I thought about buying/returning one instead of renting but I was too chicken ***** in case I got stuck with store credit or something)
- Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah. ***** gamers. A new CPU comes out and an important test is to see if I can squeeze more FPS in Counter-Strike: Source. WTF!!
How about more productivity/media tests!
Like MPEG2 encoding, 3D rendering in Maya/3D Studio Max, etc - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When will Core 2 Duo notebooks be available from the major notebook manufacturers?
- GraceMolloy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6drool ... MacBook Pro ... Needs a damned Merom!
- Hutch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not that I see, I was hoping to read what their final thoughts were/when they would be widely available to all manufacturers..
- meepus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree! It's not like the Source engine is an efficient model of whether or not a new processor is better. Unless you have an insane SLI set-up with tons of amazingly fast ram, the CPU is not going to be your bottleneck. Something that relies mainly on the processor would be a much more effective test.
- phlux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have a number of dell laptops:
dell D820 (dual core)
Dell D810
Dell D800
Dell D600
All of these machines are for work - but I have basically replaced my desktop (which is a dual proc Dual core machine) and I have used the laptops for gaming.
I now am typing on the dual core D820 with 2gb ram which I play the game "Prey" on at fairly high res. I also play "Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter" on this machine and I find it to be good. Not great but goot. I have the NVIDIA 256MB vid card in the box and it does ok - but I had to disable all the power mgmt features which slowed the system down when the machine was on Batt.
The biggest flaw in all these systems is the intel proc only allowed you to step UP when plugged in or ALWAYS run in slow mode.
I have been significantly pleased with the latest 820 in which the dual core sits - but I am honestly not usre if its due to the proc of the vid card. I believe its the vid card.
anyway - I really like that dual core is now available.
on a personal aside - I wish I still had access to my email archive from when I worked at intel. I sent out an email in 1999 when I was there working in the DRG group where I was responsible for the DRG Gaming lab - we tested all new games against the latest intel procs to ensure they complied with the new instruction sets on the latest intel procs. (like SIMD, MMX etc)
I sent an email out in late 98 or 99 (cant recall which) to engineers asking why we could build a proc with two cores on the same bus as the (P2/3/4 of the time)
I got back a myriad of reasons why this wasnt possible.
To this day I am kicking myself why I never saved that email....
I save ALL work emails now though. :) - Black913Hole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My thoughts exactly, i skipped right to the last page in the hopes of just a quick summary, but to no avail. I was also maybe hoping for some AMD comparisons; note that i havnt read the article, yet, so my wish could still come true.
- Hutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I read something last week about apple ordering core 2 duo's so don't worry, they are coming out at some point in the near future ;)
- MaHaGoN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why wouldn't you buy a current Core Duo notebook, for cheaper as prices continue to come down due to the introduction of the Core 2 Duo? (Check local store flyers for pretty good deals, that is if you want to shy away from Dell etc) You can later upgrade it to a 2 Duo, preferably once your warranty begins to run down, and after price drops in the 2 Duo family. That way, you could enjoy your own notebook now, and upgrade when most convenient, or you find it is actually necessary. I have gone this route (obviously have yet to upgrade) and I feel it is a much better solution than just renting.
MaHaGoN - chan0429, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's not just you. The article lacked being done by tomshardware.com.
- Hutch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So are these processors available now or what? he didn't seem to mention if they were slipped to him early or that he bought them. I've been waiting forever for these and I didn't hear any news of them coming out...
EDIT:@noseeme
Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's another take ( http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=864&cid=10 ) on the topic of Merom, one that never found its way up the Digg food chain...
- slashdotted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Every machine appears clocked at a different speed. It's not clear that the significant clock speed difference is being compensated for. It would be interesting to analyze the data after a compensation.
ajb = 1.66Ghz = mobile core 2 duo, 2mb L2cache
rock = 2.33Ghz mobile core 2 duo, 4mb L2cache
~ 40% difference in clock speed (!)
T60 = 2.16Ghz ‘Yonah’ Core Duo (T2600)
~ 30 % difference in clock speed from ajb
E6600 = 2.4Ghz Conroe (desktop) Core 2 Duo (what tom's hardware reviewed)
~ 45% difference in clock speed from ajb
I'm curious what the CPU differences are, independent of clock speed - that doesn't appear to be represented very clearly with these bar charts, but that might be a good followup article for someone.. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It will probably be weeks/months (depending on brand) before anything hits the retail shelves, but they're already available for order. HP has them in some models now, Dell does too on a few XPS models, and on the regular line (supposedly) by the end of the week. The other "majors" (if anyone else can be considered major) will have them as soon as they get rid of their existing Core Duo chips, if not sooner.
- scottie924, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well if these run on less energy, I would expect Apple to replace all their notebooks and mac mini. It seems obivious if it is more powerful and uses less energy. I'm holding off for new MacBooks. Or maybe I'll get a MacBook Pro. Who knows, we'll have to wait and see. But Appleinsider reports that they are both getting the new chip, along with the mini.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Rocketnick
Apparently you are mistaken. What I'm understanding from this review and from other's that I've seen is that Merom is not "far more efficient" than Pentium/Core Duo. It is slightly faster (in the 5-20% range, depending on the benchmark), and battery-life as improved slightly, but the heat generated hasn't decreased.
If I had my choice for a laptop (that's what I want to call it and where it will be most of the time), I'd actually trade all those gains in processing power for more battery life and less heat. Intel has decided that 31-35W TDP is acceptable for portable processors (with their X2's, so has AMD). Apparently, it's not acceptable, because they burn your lap and need power-sapping fans to stay cool.
They, both AMD and Intel, should probably hold their TDP at 25W, and build the fastest processors that they can within that envelop, because, because my 25W AMD processor is a cool as could be, and at 2 GHz (single-core), it's pretty fast. For single threaded apps (like games/media-encoding), it's almost as fast as it gets, and it doesn't burn my lap. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was just a riduculous article. Were they conparing different laptops, or trying to show diffences in different processor models, or what? The results just aren't clear or useful at all.
- MobileUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you really want to know If you can survive with the cheaper Core Duo systems, read this story that tests and compares two laptops one with Core Duo, and one with Core 2 Duo http://laptopmag.com/Features/Intel-Core-2-Duo-Test-Drive.htm
- The_Pope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The verdict is on Page 5 - the pages with the results are just there if you want to refer to them while reading Pages 1 to 5. They aren't "inline" results like many other sites. It's just how TR does things
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, this comparison was horribly done. All of the charts list the model of the laptop, not the chips in them, and nowhere is there a nice side-by-side spreadsheet showing how any of these systems are any different. I know it's a tandem review of disparate laptops, but if you're going to compare them and not even apples-to-apples, at least tell me how the apples and oranges are different.
- Gylusea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am typing this on a XPS M1210 with the core 2 Duo inside and I don't have a problem with it getting to hot. I can push it hard and it never gets to the point that I think I am going to get burnt.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's definitely a very limited number (that is, zero people) because the most substantial improvement of 64-bit is support for more than 4 gigs of RAM. I've never seen a laptop with more than 2 gigs of RAM (all have 2 slots, and I don't know if 2 gig chips even exist yet).
Furthermore, there's really nothing that you can do on a laptop that would warrant that much memory. It's not like you're going to be running a server and 2 virtualized OS's, from your hotel room on vacation. 64-bit is an evolutionary necessity already useful for certain applications, but we're definitely at a point where hardware power has far surpassed most people's needs for it.
I mean, think about all those kids going off to college this year with Core Duo laptops this year! One core for AIM, and one core for Myspace/YouTube! It's totally overkill, but Dell sells 'em for $600, so why the hell not? - cam18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1actually they run a lot cooler than previous processors
- LVsFINEST, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe you did save it and your ISP deleted it on pur.. accident. *cough(PlusNet)cough*
- NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I understand how this kinda ***** always happens, but, not owning this mac for more than a month, I would feel very cheated if apple went and upgraded it right away.
- CitizenKamb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They just need to get a damn move on it so I can buy one for college!
- 21.0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2ugh my new Mac Pro doesnt even get 40fps on 1920 x 1200 with antialiasing on and those are ***** laptops! I'm suing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3mmm crotchburn, i usually ahve to pay someone else to do it. now i can do it myself and get a powerful lappy to boot!

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6lol who rents laptops lol...anyway i wanna upgrade my mac mini soon
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5Something tells me that this'll cause some major crotchburn if you attempt to use it as an actual laptop, unless it's got a VERY efficient fan. May be too powerful for it's own good.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2No comparison to Apple MacBook Pro? No digg for bias articles.
