- TKDEE, on 11/12/2007, -4/+74Am I the only one who thinks it would have been funny if they squeezed an extra 4 MHz out of the front side bus?... anyone? OK, it's probably just me.
- z3rgRush, on 11/12/2007, -4/+68Awesome, now 90% of my (non-optimized) software not only gets to miss out on dual, but even quad cpu power!
- harrypl0tter, on 11/12/2007, -18/+77bye bye AMD
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/12/2007, -7/+52AMD is also releasing a new line of native quads in Q4 2007. Will be interesting to see how they stack up.
- jer2eydevil88, on 11/12/2007, -5/+40Finally something that will run Vista
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+35This is what happens when you kick a sleeping giant. They wake up from their slumber kinda cranky.
- uptown, on 11/12/2007, -3/+24So Q4 like December, or Q4 like October?
- HeyArnold, on 11/12/2007, -3/+23ITS ALL ABOUT DA PENTIUMS BABY!
- Renton, on 11/12/2007, -2/+20No *****, this is (or at least was) a tech site. Back to myspace for you.
- plurk, on 11/12/2007, -1/+15AMD was founded in 1969. It has weathered being second (and third) in the past and it can survive it again. In the last decade, AMD has come far enough that it isn't grouped w/ Cyrix/VIA anymore and is considered a serious competitor (for a while there, it had the lead). Competition is good for us, the consumer, and I don't think AMD is going anywhere anytime soon.
- opticsnake, on 11/12/2007, -5/+16Engadget spam.

Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, and apps like that make very good use of multiple cores. There's your answer. - Renton, on 11/12/2007, -6/+15If only they added 4 more MHz...
- geminitojanus, on 11/12/2007, -2/+9The 90% doesn't matter, what matters is the 10% that is optimized for multi-cores: your Operating System. With 4 cores, you can execute four threads OR processes at once. That means four programs running at the same time can all redraw their UIs (if your UI framework is multi-core aware), that means a media player can confine its audio to one core and its video to another and you can still run other applications, that means you can render 4 web pages at the same time (if you're the kind of guy who clicks a lot of links at once, or if your browser is smart and pre-fetches and renders pages).
So no, your solitare app that isn't multi-threaded doesn't matter all that much in the scheme of things. Most all of the hard work of multi-threading your OS and application frameworks was done years ago. - knobidy, on 11/12/2007, -1/+8Well the way they have been running, I would say they need to pull their heads out of their asses.
- SNIa, on 11/12/2007, -12/+19That is... until Samsung buys AMD...then it's bye bye Intel.
- jasoncz1, on 11/12/2007, -3/+10So um can we have some more price cuts on the Core 2 Duo and also the AMD dual cores? Consumers need to benefit from this more.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/12/2007, -3/+9AMD is hyping their native quad Phenoms out the ass. They won't shut up about them. We may actually see AMD bounce back and outbench Intel. I think it's foolish to count them out of the fight so soon... You never know what to expect with these hardware companies.
- Phyltre, on 11/12/2007, -2/+7This blog-spam fever kind of irks me. These blogs do the work of bringing significant news stories and discussions under a single roof--just like any form of traditional media! Do you really think that news aggregation isn't an important service? Why would something that links to such a portal be considered spam?
- Emrtr4, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, you have to love all out corporate war!!! These processor advances have done more in the last two years with duel core than the last 10 years of Pentium did in terms of performance increase.
- init100, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5"you can play and scan for virus at the same time."
Unfortunately, they will still contend for the same hard drive.
"With the appearance of multithreaded programs, all cores will be loaded by one program, so what's the point?"
Your multithreaded program works faster? - inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+6Yes! More reason for me to not upgrade yet. This will save me lots of money.
Imagine waiting until 2008, and then waiting again for a sale. And by the time there's a sale, new CPUs are announced and I'm going to wait for those CPUs. It's never a good time to upgrade. COOL - disrupter, on 11/12/2007, -2/+6Sure mate
- DarkMeld, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Its prob cuz they want to intro them over $1k and bring em down wen amd has something to compete with it.
- jdoc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Indeed, i think this is going to be a nice showdown. AMD was never quiet to begin with. They have always been agressive on countering their competitors... I know it has been slow for the past year, but it will certainly try and in the end it's the consumer who wins!
- sbazzle, on 11/12/2007, -2/+6You mean Spider Solitaire won't lag anymore?! Oh what a sweet glorious world!!
- catalysis, on 11/12/2007, -1/+5The high-performance desktop segment is only a small part of the overall business.
- obliviousfool, on 11/12/2007, -1/+5You mean, like, Vista basic, right?
- superdupergc, on 11/12/2007, -4/+8could be q4 fiscal, which could be as late as march.
- champ20, on 10/10/2007, -6/+9Intel has such an advance over AMD it's not funny. thought there was a time everyone thought AMD had it. oh well
- blackoper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you are deluding yourself if you don't think that the Intel chips offer better performance on the high end. Their newest, fastest chips outperform the crap out of amd. Now when it comes to every day use, AMDs chips under $300 are competitive especially on the server end where power consumption is key.
In summary, don't be a fan boy. Being loyal to a corporate entity you have no stake in is a waste of your time and energy. - maninblac1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Q4 like November, 45nm will likely be scarce even for the holidays, after new years, expect 45nm to be available to the retail market in limited quantities (i predict)
- toxicityj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4shut up. please.
- mozzep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Actually, no. AMD would cost about 8 billion to buy. Samsung is worth over 100 billion. For comparison, Sony is worth about 50 billion.

- j0hnglist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3this is good cause im ready for dual-core prices to drop
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+312MB of L2 cache ??? DAM !!
- Azuroth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sure they are. Four cores, one socket....quad core. So they may not communicate the way you think they should, it doesn't change the fact that there are four cores sitting in my cpu slot in my motherboard.
- driftwood07, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4i dont want a 3800+ ...
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...and play with nobody...
- tyler1175, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4hopefully in time for crysis
- disrupter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4nobody cares
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Anyone with a PVR/HTPC, that want to transcode their movies into XviD/DivX for storage would greatly benefit. from this.
My C2D E6320 can do 2-pass XviD encoding at 60-70 fps for the first pass and 25-30 fps for the second pass. Since there are two cores, I can run two encoding processes at once. My previous processor, an Athlon XP 2800+, could do 25-30 fps for the first pass and around 15 fps for the second pass.
Each core of my new CPU is thus twice as fast as my Athlon XP for XviD encoding. - LegendarySock, on 10/10/2007, -2/+51337... They would have effectively won over 99% of the Digg populace.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You are just stupid. Azuroth is correct. It has four cores, and thus is as true as any other quad-core. That you think their design is lame is another matter, it does not make them less true quad-cores. Besides, there are reasons for their design, as it gives them a better yield, which translates to cheaper processors.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There are people that actually need processing power, not just to run the latest Microsoft system, but to do real work (Hint: I work in a supercomputing centre).
- bendru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3except that Intel's fiscal year ends on December 31
http://www.intel.com/intel/finance/faq1.htm - DeepFreezed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4AMD is done
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5foooook me. I thought this was Q4 2008. this is hawt
