- Duncster, on 10/12/2009, -2/+17No it ***** can't! People play Crysis, not computers.
- executex, on 10/12/2009, -0/+14That's a lot of parts >_>, I wonder how many operations it can do.
- Phrea, on 10/12/2009, -1/+13Now that is a beautiful piece of machinery. Unlike the dull million-times-faster beige boxes under our desks...
- BossKey, on 10/12/2009, -0/+8When they turned it on, the first thing it wanted to do was download 30 years of software updates...
- MrChunks, on 10/12/2009, -0/+7My box isn't beige, dull or under my desk.
- yor1001, on 10/12/2009, -0/+7At a blistering .000001 ^-∞ frames per second.
- fatefuldreams, on 10/12/2009, -0/+4Amazing how far computers have come.
- captininsanity, on 10/12/2009, -0/+4The tubes it used are called dekatrons, "Dekatrons filled with inert gas are inherently more stable and have a longer life, but their counting frequency is limited to 10 kHz (1–2 kHz is more common)".
however
"It had a multiplication time of between 5 and 10 seconds which was evidently very slow for an electronic computer." - Mizzike, on 10/12/2009, -0/+4That pic looks like a macro photograph of today's common microchip.
- captininsanity, on 10/12/2009, -0/+4Actually you might be right. There's an assembly language called LC-3 used for education that only has 15 instructions and it's complete. For that matter "*****" only needs 8. Just instead of measuring the speed in frames per second you're going to have to use hours per frame...
- sputnikv, on 10/12/2009, -1/+4is the antikythera mechanism considered a computer?
- poisonborz, on 10/12/2009, -0/+3For anyone saying how beautiful those machines were: just bend down, slide the side of your PC case, and look at the motherboard. We're not that far from that technology as we might believe.
- sputnikv, on 10/12/2009, -0/+2with 20 operators maybe
- kaosethema, on 10/12/2009, -1/+3cute
- BL4CKCR4Y0NS, on 10/12/2009, -1/+3Wow .... to think that that was invented by man ... and then look at our machines now ...
- empath, on 10/12/2009, -2/+4When I worked at the Census Bureau, I had to fix the head of the telecommunications office's computer once. I noticed he had an interesting looking paperweight on his desk, so I picked it up -- it was the serial plate #1 from UNIVAC 1

I thought about pocketing it and putting it on ebay, but then figured somebody would probably notice :( But still, it was kinda cool to hold a piece of computing history in my hands. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2009, -1/+3But it's a box.
- captininsanity, on 10/12/2009, -0/+2You could always build your own steampunk case.
- j0hnglist, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1cool story, bro
- conan777kudo, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1that's what she said

- bmiami69, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1big, huge, spacious and slow?
- bmiami69, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1yeah luv The Office
- captininsanity, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1@BugMeNot2 Because a ball won't sit still, and a pyramid would take up an unnecessary amount of space. I'm willing to bet you're a mac user...
Edit: Freakin bugmenot! Get a real account if you want to use digg, it doesn't take that much effort. Don't get me wrong I love the idea behind BugMeNot, but digg is not the kind of site you need it for... - Chris_F, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1>It had a multiplication time of between 5 and 10 seconds
Wow, meaning that a human could quite probably out compute it in certain situations. - RAAFStupot, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1Yes.

- ole1kanobe, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1Excite, is that you???
- ampdj89, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1I bet those are capacitors.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/13/2009, -0/+1Ha.
- BossKey, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1Dull? Beige? My iPhone has a more powerful CPU and graphics card than my first two laptops and my first desktop.
- replaysMike, on 10/13/2009, -0/+1Call the people at Best Buy - its probably the only type of computer they are qualified to fix.
- absurdist, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1Beautiful. The images made me imagine walking around inside a CPU.
- Salamati6, on 10/12/2009, -7/+5And yet it's still more user friendly than Windows Vista..
- captininsanity, on 10/12/2009, -9/+7But can it run Crysis?
- ajsmth, on 10/12/2009, -18/+8But can it play Crysis?
