- ChemiosMurphy, on 04/10/2009, -12/+389Newegg for life.
- FirstDigg, on 04/10/2009, -3/+141The funniest part about this is just today I was cleaning out some old boxes and came across a receipt for my phone which I bought right before CompUSA closed back in 2007 and was thinking I actually did miss the store. When you don't have a fry's around (east coast) there aren't many other options for getting misc computer parts and compusa really did a decent (though many times overpriced) job at stocking these things when you "needed it now" rather then waiting for it to arrive from an online shop. Nice to see them coming back from the dead, even if they aren't near me yet.
Store listings (mostly in FL, but also IL, NC, TX, and PR): http://www.compusa.com/retailstores/compusaStores/ ...
^^ Only lists 23 though, 7 more just opened I guess or are about to open - sc0ttius, on 04/10/2009, -1/+118It will be amazing if the new CompUSA is like Microcenter...
For those who don't know... Microcenter is basically Newegg in a store... so no waiting for shipping. - slantyeyed, on 04/10/2009, -2/+89RETAIL 2.0? Is that the new buzzword I have to roll my eyes at every time I hear it?
- tizzleG, on 04/10/2009, -0/+63RETAIL 2.0: THIS TIME, IT'S PERSONAL.
- Cabose, on 04/10/2009, -1/+52Please say the new stores will be selling Bawls™. I need my fix man!
- nesagwa, on 04/10/2009, -0/+44The new CompUSA/Tiger Direct isnt anything like the old one. Bargain prices and they actually carry most of what is on their site in store for the same price. (I go to the one in Tampa, FL)
Hard to beat that really. Newegg prices and selection without having to wait for shipping? Its win win. - MrZaiko, on 04/10/2009, -1/+44Tiger Direct with a CompUSA hat on.
- Konformitee, on 04/10/2009, -1/+42Actually it can be beat. I found it was cheaper to build my system from parts I bought at the brick and mortar Microcenter across town than it was to order them from Newegg. Here's an example... Intel Core i7 920. $288.99 at Newegg, $229.99 at Microcenter. Even figuring in tax, it is still a good deal, although in-store-only.

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results. ...
Here's another real example... I built a system for my mother a few months ago with this E7400 Core2Duo processor I picked up for $99.99 at Microcenter, it is $119.99 at Newegg:

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results. ... - bigteebo, on 04/10/2009, -0/+40I don't even buy a candy bar at Best Buy without a product protection plan.
- Saint3k, on 04/10/2009, -1/+33As an unemployed American I can say that I am in favor of this.
- AmusedToDeath, on 04/10/2009, -0/+32The problem I always had with CompUSA was the impossibility of getting anyone on the phone. It was like their phone system was specifically designed to prevent you from actually speaking with a person at that store to check stock, etc. Retailers underestimate the importance of phone service, especially when the store is 30-40 miles away from where you live.
- hymneforthedead, on 04/10/2009, -4/+35I knew CompUSA would rise from the ashes to destroy the deceitful best buy.
DEATH TO BEST BUY; The home of over priced electronics. - FXNGLAS, on 04/10/2009, -0/+271.5 TB for $30??? Must see this.
- Slizzo, on 04/10/2009, -1/+27In reality, the "new" CompUSA stores are just brick and mortar locations for TigerDirect. This means good selection, and hopefully good pricing available to the common man.
- theghoul, on 04/10/2009, -2/+26Buy nothing with rebates. You have been warned.
- ddogfilm, on 04/10/2009, -4/+27thats crazy ! i never knew other stores were closign outside my city (tx) all but one closed but every circuit city closed. good thing more stores are coming!
- colonelcupcake, on 04/10/2009, -1/+23Improved lighting. That'll keep them in business.
- j0hnglist, on 04/10/2009, -0/+19Its 9:30 on a Saturday night. Trust me, you don't need computer parts. You need a woman
- flintmecha, on 04/10/2009, -1/+19Newegg doesn't have 32-inch flat panel TVs for $200.
- Devrdander, on 04/10/2009, -0/+17Systemax (TigerDirect) bought out comp usa and only kept the profitable stores a year or so ago. The stores now are integrated and price matched to the website (tiger direct is the same as compusa online now) and they use the stores as shipping hubs for products. Ask the guys in the back, and they will tell you half their job is shipping out orders from the website. This is how they keep prices low, they have distributed warehousing merged with Retail. Their prices on most common items are withing range of sites like Newegg and or the diff is negligible since its just a few minute drive away.
- Anidash, on 04/10/2009, -0/+16Unless you live in Hawaii or for that matter anywhere out side of Newegg's delivery zone. :-/
I actually liked compusa. The waipahu store always had nice people and the prices were cheaper in many cases than most other places here. Delivery/returns kills the online experience for me so brick and motor is more than welcome. The downtown one did suck though... but that's still ok. I rather have the option of shopping compusa than no option at all.
A little factoid is that the Hawaii compusa store were the most profitable in the chain when they closed. Which is why I hope they decide to open another store here soon. If that ain't motivation I don't know what is. :) - ww3ace, on 04/10/2009, -0/+16I love microcenter because they don't charge you $30 for a 3ft ethernet cable unlike best buy
- AudioLoveMagic, on 04/10/2009, -1/+15I could give a $hit, but reading this, I couldn't help but root for them a little.
If there's an open CompUSA near me, I may make a trip. - CrazedLeper, on 04/10/2009, -0/+14I'd be afraid to buy that just on principle: you get what you pay for...
- jbmcb, on 04/10/2009, -0/+14There's a relatively small chain called Microcenter that's actually really great, especially for system builders. They actually have better prices than Newegg on some stuff, even with taxes. They don't carry everything, but have a decent variety of parts, including watercooling and Mac stuff.
The one by my house used to have the greatest selection of computer books I've ever seen (Art of computing, the TeX book, graphics gems, an O'Reilly wall...) but they've recently downsized to make room for more games.
There used to be a CompUSA and Computer City in the area as well, both have since closed and Microcenter is the only one left. It's usually packed, so I think there could be room for another chain computer store, if they had competitive prices. - Skorme, on 04/10/2009, -0/+14You're quite the employee...
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -2/+15Shopping at Best Buy is like reading you typo. The brain, urgh... It hurrrrts.
- strictnein, on 04/10/2009, -0/+13Microcenter kicks ass. They realized that Newegg was eating up a lot of their business so they've targeted them. Even when they aren't beating Newegg on the CPU prices, they'll price match them in store. So, you pay tax as opposed to shipping (and newegg's shipping is getting a little pricey), but you get the item right away.
- FXNGLAS, on 04/10/2009, -0/+13$200.00 for a 32" LCD TV? WHERE?!
- superlantern, on 04/10/2009, -0/+12The one here never closed and has been basically a Tiger Direct store.
- bigteebo, on 04/10/2009, -0/+11They have a huge uphill battle to climb, at least storewise, if there is a MicroCenter in the area. They outdo BestBuy & anyone else for just straight-up computer stuff. Also, they have fun USB toys.
What was that computer store chain back in the mid-90s that basically looked like a warehouse? That didn't last long in the twin cities, being 200 feet from a Best Buy in Roseville, MN. - L0NER, on 04/10/2009, -0/+10They were the geek friendly store, selling both case modding supplies and apple stuff. welcome back
- pjpete, on 04/10/2009, -0/+10I second that! Love Newegg. I ordered something mid morning Wed, and had it by Thurs afternoon on ground shipping.
- ChoiceMad, on 04/10/2009, -1/+11CompUSA held that same title for quite some time.
- blah247, on 04/10/2009, -0/+10It can't be beat.
- bobbknight, on 04/10/2009, -0/+9Bring back Computer City!
- dagr8tim, on 04/10/2009, -1/+10@FXNGLAS
My bad, $30 more for the 1.5 TB on new egg than the 1 TB at Microcenter. The 1 TB was $99.99 (plus tax), and the 1.5 was $129.99 (no tax & free shipping).
Personally, I'd be scared of a 1.5 TB hard drive for $30. - dagr8tim, on 04/10/2009, -2/+11As much as I like Microcenter, they are not the end all beat all in my book. Yeah it's great on Saturday night when I need something at 9:30 at night. But I've shifted to newegg for most of my needs. I just ordered an asus netbook on Newegg, that with overnight shipping was like $3 more than buying a similar Acer netbook at Microcenter.
But back to Microcenter, their prices aren't that good on some things. I was looking at a 1TB drive on Microcenter's site, and got a similar (same brand) 1.5 TB drive on newegg for $30 with free shipping (and ofcourse I didn't have to pay tax). - byronm, on 04/10/2009, -0/+8Bring Back "Incredible Universe"
Its amazes me that Incredible Universe just had bad timing in its launch.. the world wasn't ready for what Fry's was finally able to pioneer just a short time later.
Wonder why there is no fry's for us East Coasters? - Elranzer, on 04/10/2009, -0/+8NewEgg also ships from NJ for east coast orders. I'm in NY and always get my NewEgg orders the next day when I pick UPS Ground delivery.
Just never pick "Egg Saver" as it's DHL Shipping that takes forever (two weeks and change for a part that would've been here the next day if I picked UPS Ground). - jrapp, on 04/10/2009, -0/+8The order fulfillment is the whole point. Granted, if you live near CA or TN, then you're almost always going to get your order quickly. However, newegg's ability to fulfill orders usually in the same day is extremely impressive. Most other companies are going to drop-ship the products, which generally adds 1-3 business days in delay, or they'll delay it from their own warehouse because they're understaffed/not automated like newegg.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -1/+9Tiger? Tiger direct?
You must work for them or something, no one recommends tiger unless they hate the people they suggest them too ... or work for them.
Worst company I have ever dealt with FINAL SALE - gemlarin, on 04/10/2009, -1/+8I used Newegg for years, but stopped recently in light of them screwing me over. Ordered a netbook from them, they sent it, and when I opened it, the screen was damaged, on the inside. They tried to blame it on the shipper, but the box was fine, and the screen was damaged on the lcd, not the housing, so the shipper denied responsibility (as they should). So then Newegg told me to ship it back to them for repair. REPAIR? It was brand new, just opened, never even booted up. I sent it back, told them to inspect it, and send me a replacement. I figured they would not refund due to their no refund policy on computers, but they had no reason not to replace it. They insisted it had to go back to the vendor for repair, and it would take 3-4 weeks.
So, I was being forced to wait 4 weeks + the time wasted in the original shipping, + time for UPS to inspect it, and they refused to replace it, or refund my money. They wanted to basically give me a refurb for full price, after 5 weeks waiting. I contacted my bank, they reversed the charges, and I told newegg to pound salt.
All this, after 6 years a loyal customer that had spent over $5,000 over those years (I checked my account, it was $5,121 to be exact). Never again Newegg, never again. - whamdanglers, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7If CompUSA is banking on Retail 2.0, I sure hope they look forward to Bankruptcy 2.0!
- PixelMagic, on 04/10/2009, -1/+8One might even say it's eggcellent.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7Ever since Circuit City closed the only game we have in town is Best Buy. That is it. You have to travel an hour and a half to get to any other competing store so Best Buy pretty much has a monopoly in our town. That is probably why I just look at stuff in Best Buy and buy it online for cheaper.
- Jonjonr6, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7That's partially because Best Buy only sells that damned Belkin *****.
- byronm, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7Actually it will. The CompUSA in Delaware was dim.. it just wasn't appealing to shop there and i'm sure less appealing to work there. I'm not sure what they were going for when they designed the stores like that but it was a terrible choice.
Image means a lot.. just look at Tropicana for a perfect example :) - GeekNurse, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7I used to work there back in the day. I remember selling the first 1x CD-R drive. I think it cost $1100 USD. The blank media was $15.00 a peice and if you sneezed while burning it, you had yourself a nice coaster. I think the first 14.4 modem was $750 USD.
