- jasdf, on 05/02/2009, -1/+18I remember thinking that I was hot ***** when I overclocked by TNT2 by 10MHz.
- silentdragoon, on 05/02/2009, -1/+18Where do you think Gigabyte is based?
- solid12345, on 05/02/2009, -0/+11I think in this setting Crysis might just be finally playable!

Taiwan? Really? - b3owulf, on 05/02/2009, -0/+11Warning Part 2: It can become very expensive, especially if you suck at it.
- hooah212002, on 05/02/2009, -1/+8really? there is such a thing as an overclocker hater?
It's my money, my time, my *****, shut the ***** up and have your piece of ***** pc. - fury420, on 05/02/2009, -0/+6umm, yeah... I'm no overclocking expert, but dont't these people pride themselves on how fast they can make the machine WITHOUT it overheating & crashing? doesn't it kinda defeat the point when its not stable?
- yerdaddy, on 05/02/2009, -1/+7Overclockers waste more time ***** around with their computers than normal users lose because of speed limitations. It's a hobby, nothing more.
- hooah212002, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5Why are people bashing overclocking? What does it harm you?
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5And that same machine that destroys the overclocked machine 6 months from now is destroyed by a stock machine that is even cheaper, 6 months from then.
Do you really not understand how this works? Overclockers do it because they want the best performance NOW. If we had time machines, it wouldn't be necessary. - gitboxgreg, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5I saw them setting this up the night before at the pacific palm resort, I wish i could have seen it.

You're fired - inactive, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3I don't know. Taiwan? I don't know.
- JudgeDredd, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3No. They set the CPU, graphics card, etc. at a higher clock rate which makes the computer run faster than it would have out of the box. It is all hardware manipulation. I'm sure there are 100's of sites that will give you tips on how to do this if you are interested.
- catastrophee, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3being able to reboot? How about running super pi for a couple hours.
- canchin, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3I love building and overclocking computers, but I find a flaw in the way the winner was decided, mainly due to this:
"Immediately after completing the 3DMark06 benchmark and screenshot, the system crashed and did not come back up."
Just being able to finish a benchmark and then having the system die does not a good overclock make. Having a system stable AFTER the overclock and running for at least few hours, turning it off and rebooting is the sign of a good overclock IMO, but if all they were after was just speed for the sake of a couple minutes of speed seems to be a bit of a con. - ImyK, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3People who are going to bash this article by calling them geeks or telling them they need to get laid, etc, are ignorant *****. People soup up cars and no-one complains - it's a hobby for the owner and something they are enthusiastic about. I don't understand the social stigma that surrounds anything and everything concerning computing.
Learn to appreciate. - keyforce, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3Nobody said "enthusiasts" were thrifty.
- HappyScrappy, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3Most amazing part of this article:
There's some place in the City of Industry, CA that tries to call it self a resort - "Pacific Palm Resort". It must be hidden behind all the industrial hellholes. - driftwood07, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3going with the 'computer equivalent of a drag race' reference. drag racers do not compete in marathon races around a track. they simply do a one time 1/4 mile and they do it fast as *****. after each race the engine is completely torn down and rebuilt. these machines are able to post, boot the OS, and then finishing the benchmark is like crossing the finish line.
of course, on their home machines im sure none of them hold an overlock unless it runs orthos or some stress test for less than 24 hours straight. - JKAL, on 05/03/2009, -0/+2and you know... because you have a season pass?
- isunktheship, on 05/02/2009, -0/+2zomg moores law
- sv650touring, on 05/03/2009, -0/+2Being able to complete a benchmark is one standard of stability to an overclocker, just as completing a quarter-mile is one standard for reliability to a drag racer.
Since determining "total" stability can take weeks of stress testing, it would make for a pretty boring competition. Also, how do you know that your 48h stable overclock is 48h+1min stable, if you don't let the stress program keep running?
Plenty of overclocked AND non-overclocked computers aren't absolutely stable, but will run all day long under normal condition with no noticable symptoms. - sv650touring, on 05/03/2009, -0/+2Exactly.
"Any car which holds together for more than a race is too heavy." - Colin Anthony Bruce Chapman (Lotus founder, multiple F1 contstructor's champion, all-around motorsports legend) - mason092, on 05/02/2009, -0/+2It's a hobby. Nothing more. They aren't trying to get the best thing for their money.
- hooah212002, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1addicting indeed.....
- j4rcher, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1That is one nice computer.
- Discola, on 05/02/2009, -1/+2A warning though, you may become addicted to pushing your computer to the limits :D
- Vipersfate, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1There is one forum that I frequent that one of the competitors is from (sno.lcn), and believe me, these people are good, addicted, and for some reason, have lots of monies.
- blah247, on 05/02/2009, -3/+4Lots of effort for marginal gains.
- osteor10, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1Really
- Ricochetbiscuit, on 05/03/2009, -0/+1Yeah baby... Glengarry Glen Ross
- XxpokemasterxX, on 05/03/2009, -0/+1but can they run Crysis?
- Peepsalot, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1I'm not really bashing overclocking, or even the idea of holding a contest, but to me it just seems a bit boring that everyone essentially is doing the same thing by putting a cup on top of their CPU and pouring liquid nitrogen in it. It would be interesting to see maybe some different restricted contest categories, like Air-Cooled only, Water Cooled only, etc.
- mason092, on 05/02/2009, -1/+2Crysis has been easily playable for quite a while. Not on max settings, but it's not hard to run. It's still the only game that really is hard on your PC.
- shiv68, on 05/02/2009, -2/+2The groupies are scary.
- shandromand, on 05/04/2009, -1/+1You obviously need to get out more. Most of the overclockers I know (myself included) have a good-paying job they work hard at, and are neither spoiled nor have rich parents.
- sgyoung, on 05/02/2009, -3/+2lol, every overclocker I know is some spoiled kid who has parents that take him to the "hobby store" to buy him a $500 remote control car
- s34mu5, on 05/02/2009, -2/+1yes really.
would you prefer to go nowhere? - jaxonya, on 05/02/2009, -4/+3hey the virgin convention was going on at the same place and time..
- RoanokeRich, on 05/02/2009, -2/+1These guys need to get laid.
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -5/+4So do they just do this by creating their own drivers, or what?
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -5/+4nerds rule!!
- yerdaddy, on 05/02/2009, -7/+1Morons. All you have to do is wait six months, pay the same money, and your silly little hotrod project gets eaten alive by a stock machine.
