- glassx, on 11/03/2007, -3/+203I'm the one who made this (almost a year ago) and there are FAR better projects out there. See: www.lumenlab.com , in the DIY section or forums.
It was cool at the time, but not digg-worthy. (Haha, buried my own project) - MikeonTV, on 11/01/2007, -5/+124Thanks for a pic of the finished product...oh wait there wasn't one you jerk!
- uptown, on 11/05/2007, -14/+97"You can even see the individual red/green/blue sub pixels! Success!"
That's a good thing? - webcure, on 10/30/2007, -4/+73Oh yeah!
I wouldn't have any problem building that... - spudfrog, on 10/31/2007, -3/+61Next time, try linking to the site where you learned how to make the projector and buy the supplies in the first place.
http://lumenlab.com/ - RedHerringHack, on 10/30/2007, -2/+56Yes, it is. It means that you have super sharp focus. Then step back 10 feet, and gasp at the detail from HDTV. You are looking at 2.3 MEGAPIXELS.

Price: $799
Resolution: WXGA-H (1280 x 720)
Brightness: 1000 lumens
Time to build: 0hrs. - solarbeat, on 10/30/2007, -1/+40Wood for the enclosure $50
Material for the screen $50
Logitech computer speakers $70
Explaining the big wooden box in your bootleg theater: Priceless. - coltrane68, on 11/05/2007, -11/+46Decent...pah! The speakers shown were little Logitech computer (crap) speakers. Most home theater enthusiasts would agree that audio is the most important aspect of home theater. Still, Dugg for the mad skills required to assemble the projector.
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -3/+34Don't forget your $7500 speaker wire shipped straight from www.you-must-be-retarded.com
- Pauly2020, on 10/30/2007, -3/+31If by "decent" he was implying "terrible" then I agree 100%
- themattreid, on 10/30/2007, -5/+31waste of time.
SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) projector $699

113" screen $77
http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=31 ... - joegibes, on 10/30/2007, -0/+23It's a good thing because it's sharp, but bad because the pixel density is so low that you can see individual pixels.
Need... more... resolution... - adml_shake, on 10/30/2007, -1/+22I think the point was that they were trying to do this on the cheap. And for the money those are very good speakers.
- StoneLox, on 10/31/2007, -2/+22my amp goes to 11
- stigma15, on 10/30/2007, -0/+15First time I have seen "build" used literally in this context.
- VanD, on 10/30/2007, -0/+13Where are the damn instructions?
- NF102307, on 10/30/2007, -0/+8what the ***** was the purpose of that article?
am i missing something or are there no apparent instructions and/or an actual finished product? - lirem, on 10/30/2007, -1/+9Oooh I wish I was you!
- soulpunisher, on 10/30/2007, -1/+9that looked getto IMO I rather spend the money and get a warranty
- doctordbx, on 10/30/2007, -0/+8The meaning of the word 'decent' is slipping these days.

- skyshock1, on 10/30/2007, -3/+10Pics of the rebate check or it didn't happen. For all intents and purposes, that projector is $999, not $799.
- SomeImagination, on 10/30/2007, -1/+8I like the in depth instructions that accompany the pictures
- inkyblue2, on 10/30/2007, -1/+8does your geo metro have pimped out 20" rims, too? $1600 for a receiver is pretty crazy unless your speaker budget is VERY LARGE. not to mention that anyone with that kind of money invested in audio damn well better be designing their listening room around the system. big ticket audiophile components do not equate to good sound.
- dustyshadow, on 10/30/2007, -5/+11wow. that's really ghetto
- Error601, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6My guess is it's not 5-speaker with a sub preamp out and a DTS decoder.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -1/+7No, Maybe z5500?
- mrgreen4242, on 10/30/2007, -3/+8The idea that getting a $799 projector, or even a PJ, cheap computer speakers, and a wooden frame for a sheet being an "$800 HT setup" is misleading.
There's SOOOO much more to a HT than the PJ. I'm just about done with my home theatre room, and the things that made the biggest impact are the details. The paint, the light control, hanging the speakers and hiding all the wires, etc etc. My advice is that if you only have $800 to build you HT, skimp on the PJ now and use the saved money to get a good receiver with some OK speakers (that you can then upgrade later - I recommend checking out Onkyo refurbs), put together a decent screen, whether it be painted on the wall or whatever, paint the room an appropriate color for a theatre (with matte paint), buy extra speaker wire and decent, long video/audio cables so you can set everything up where you want it without tripping over the wires, etc.
You can get a 853*480 projector cheap now, and that looks really good to be honest. I'm running my 360 through an inFocus 4805 (480p max res) at about 98" and it looks really good. I'm using the speakers from a HT in box surround sound set, and I'll eventually replace the PJ with a 720p model, after prices are down a bit more, and I'll upgrade the speakers a pair at a time (I'll get a new center and sub, then fronts and finally rears). My room is painted a great dark rd color with black trim, the screen is a velvet trimmed fixed sheet of counter top laminate (which is a great screen material, FYI), I've got a nice double reclining sofa, complete light control, a dedicated equipment closet, etc. A microwave and mini fridge are on the list for the EQ closet next... the point is that it feels like a true theatre, not a room with a big projector screen. There's a HUGE difference. I've spent maybe $2000-2500 so far... I started out with about $600 worth of gear, and have been growing steadily from there for about 16 months. - RedHerringHack, on 10/30/2007, -2/+7Yes, having focus sharp enough to see the individual pixels from corner to corner is a good thing. Then step back 10 feet.
- hrhs556x, on 10/31/2007, -2/+7why does this have so many diggs?
- mwalker05, on 10/30/2007, -2/+7isnt the projector, you know, in the way? also logitech speakers? really? you'd be better off buying a 300w onkyo refurb for $250 and olevia 37" refurb for $550
- fknc, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5Yes its a good thing.. as mentioned above, it means you have correct focus. Stand close enough to projection from any commercial projector and you will be able to see the pixels.
I have personally built a projector like this. It's 720p, cost me around $700 when 720p projectors were well more than double that. The picture is excellent, and lacks only in the brightness department.. but In a light controlled room, this isn't a problem. Plus the bulb costs $60 and last 60,000 hours so I can use it aaaalll the time. - muniak, on 10/31/2007, -5/+9You can't imagine a big wooden box with a fan hole in the back and a hole in the front?
- vipera66, on 10/29/2007, -1/+5Onkyo sells some pretty decent HTIB systems for just a bit more than those Logitech speakers that are much better suited to theater use.
- eoncire, on 10/30/2007, -6/+10"Skills". I got circular saw skills, tape measure skills, screwdriver skills....chicks dig that.
There are no "skills" outside of what a guy should know how to do. Make a line and cut it straight out of some pressed board / plywood. Screw it together. Basic wiring. Done. - nogami, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4I don't know why you got dugg down, but you're on the money. I have a really nice AV setup at home, including a ceiling mounted front-projector and a large drop-down screen, but it's not a "theatre" setup by any stretch of the imagination.
- webcrumb, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3I think it's descent.
- chemman, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3I would recommend the mitsubishi HD1000U. I got mine a year ago at projectorpeople for $825 shipped. I don't think they carry it anymore, but I think you can still find it elsewhere. By the way, if you are buying from projectorpeople, call them and you can talk them down in price even more than what's listed on the site!
- tackle, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Site down. Probably the Digg effect. Does anyone have any mirrors?
- Tenoq, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4Anyone who compares speakers by their claimed power specs is a moron. They have absolutely no bearing on sound quality, and very little bearing on volume.
- thebass, on 10/29/2007, -0/+3is that a wild guess? because i know that is a metal halide bulb, the same kind of bulb LCD projectors use. and i know you can get a metal halide bulb on ebay for $30 (minus another $150 for a digital ballast)
theres a 5000k metal halide bulb on ebay for $30
looks like it has a perfect color temperature
http://www.projectorpeople.com/flat-panel-tvs/colo ... - psiphre, on 10/30/2007, -3/+6you've only got seven terabytes?
amateur - YZBot, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4My front projector lays the colors ontop of each other onto the screen. Even directly next to the screen all that is seen is a white dot. I was thinking the same thing.
- sintaxi, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3thats what the thumb buttons are for. Just to show you, I will press the "thumbs down" button on your comment.
- davidrools, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4you'll always be able to see subpixels on a focused screen. if your eyes are good, you can see it in the white space on this digg page on your super dense pixel computer monitor. It's only bad if you can easily see them from the distance where you'll do your normal viewing.
- glassx, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3Some of you fail to see the point of the 800 HT. I'm not rich, I'm in school, but I have a home-theater. And like said above, no one cares if the sound isn't pristine when they're staring at a 90" screen in your living room.
- neodorian, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Yeah, my projector has 3 LCDs and lays them on top of each other so you don't have to see the split pixels.
