- hoyaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The latest iMac from Apple qualifies, doesn't it? ;)
- yellowperil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh crap... my wallet melted... who in their right mind will shell out 5Gs for a laptop that will be replaced in 3 years or less? seriously, a hardcore gamer would lug a desktop around that they probably built with a case mod and everthing on a freaking rolling cart ... cuz really? who else would buy those things? ... I thought the macBook Pros were expensive...
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He was refering to the combination of the two. The "/" makes it "confusing" for you i guess.
I would have used & and put it in quotes. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've seen stock traders at the Science Industrial Business Library with huge 17 inch screens. The market I think is also for "weekend warriors" whom bring work home. Personally I have a 15.4" laptop that I use for the heavy duty work I have to do away from home.
I alternatively carried an extremely slim and underpowered 2lb Sharp Actius for the "you never know when you need it" sort of work that was light enough to carry with me wherever.
I would use Foldershare and Logmein to make sure all the files were synced.
For me whom lives a mobile lifestyle yet I must be connected (presentations, last minute fix ups, etc), both extreme kinds of laptops is exactly what I needed. - bloodwings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2laptops are not air flow friendly. they physics of a laptop force it to get too hot compared to a desktop, which will always hinder a laptop's performance.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it may be a compact, easy-to-transport computer, but the Macbook Pro is what's considered a desktop replacement... especially the pizza-box-sized 17" model.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they're the best of both worlds. It's like a bisexual computer you can show off to your friends in public.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are four categories of computers: laptops, desktop replacements, desktops, and mini desktops. Apple just so happens to sell all four categories.
If you want a really portable computer, get a laptop. If you want a good computer that's also portable, get a desktop replacement - but be prepared to lug it around and pay a pretty penny for it. - Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4and you prefer?
- yellowperil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt baby boomers need two video cards and they might hate all that gaudy alien stuff... I mean, if I had the money Id shell out that kinda cash, but Im not really a gamer either.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought he meant laptops running on top of desks are silly, as in GNU/Linux being GNU utils running on a Linux kernel. ;-)
- yellowperil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh crap... dont mean to say the obvious... but looks like digg is getting infected by bots!!! again? why cant they come up with a better comment than "sub to reply" and "main to reply" its like they want you to know... if this is an actual human.... you have issues man.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems lke a fantastc waste of money to buy one of those larger laptops... but as the baby boomers get older the bigger screens will sell like hot cakes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see testbut no links
Try again! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i would like one of these, i want a powerful computer, but it is a pain to move my desktop once a month,
- hiscity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I miss my DATAVUE 25 luggable! Back in the late '80s it was like a desktop with the display mounted in the side of the tower case. The display was plasma (like an LCD) and could be angled out at the bottom. The keyboard was detachable and wireless. There was an external 5-1/4" floppy that could be mounted on the back of the unit. It was quite a machine in it's day.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If the "market push" has been for "sleek, bulked up laptops", that's probably because they're making more profit on them. Lower-end desktop machines are very much commodities these days, with very small profit margins.
If people are demanding something, you don't have to "push" it. Unless of course it's something they would want *if* they knew about it... but let's be reasonable- manufacturers almost always push the lines they make more profit on, and I expect it's them responsible in this case.
I'd be willing to bet that it'll be a long time before these machines come anywhere near desktops for unit sales. - bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Laptop-desktops would be the most appropriate form.
/ usually indicates either/or.
& is just a replacement for the word "and" - AndrewMB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But I don't think the laptops and desktop replacements will ever replace a desktop, because what about places like IT departments. I don't think they will be buying them laptopsor desktop replacements because they are just too easy to steal and keep track of. I think both will be around for a very long time.
- ESTEBEVERDE, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Whatever-ish
- Crackshot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0although I do see the usefulness and advantages of having a desktop I think its fairly clear that the market push has been for sleek, bulked up laptops. they have convenience, improved battery life, and other features that make them a little more appealing to the average consumer. Also they fold like a book, eh............... eh.
