- cmirza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For all the excited people out there, how many of you even own a 1080p display that will take advantage of these movies?
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is the wholesale price. NOT retail.
- OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I stand corrected. and you were correct. Thanks for the heads up.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Have you seen how ass-clunky the Blu-ray and HD-DVD players look?
It's like the first gen of VHS or DVD players... wait... yeah it's exactly like that. - nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The big news for me here is the UMD bundling. I first heard of this when I did a market survey, and was really excited that the idea was even out there.
- pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dude it terms of storage size(aprox 20-25g) i would definately buy one. I could back up my whole music collection on one cd, think of what that could do also for companies doing backups. This is a great step forward in tech...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For ***** sake, why are you people talking about it as if your going to buy it??? did we all forget about the rootkit fiasco??? Yes I know sony bmg is a different entity, but they are still part of the name sony...
- OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+117.95 my a$$ Don't believe a word from Sony. Remember Pearl Harbor... It is a surprise attack when we all find out that the "r" cost 100 bucks and games for their imaginary PS3 are well over 100. Why they hell do a bunch of us seem like we bow down to the Japan gaming machine.. Bonsai
- BinaryJay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RE: The UMD bunding mentioned... they should have done this from the start. I don't own a PSP, but even if I did, I would never buy the same movie twice and I'd always pick the DVD version over the PSP version... on the other hand if going about buying my DVDs I managed to simultaneously amass a collection of UMD versions I might be tempted to buy a PSP...
- KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think ill stick with pirating. $30 is not worth a 2hour movie
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great, a dupe ends up on the front page, typical
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" So what if a leading creator and supplier of advanced technology screwed up, it doesnt make them all the way evil."
Let's all just remember that comment the next time they think of saying "WINDOWZ SUCCKKKSSSS!!".
Companies are not to blame for screwing up. Right. - lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$18 for a BLANK disk at wholesale. That would mean that the cost of materials falls to almost $20 (including the case, covers, labels, "special content") Right now, dvd's cost like 50 cents wholesale... I dont like where this is going.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@cmirza
I'll own a 1080p LCD in a couple of weeks. Costco, 37" LCD 1080p with 2 HDMI/DVI connectors, VGA connector, Comonent and Composite, ATSC and NTSC tuners... $1499. Can't beat that with a stick. - tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it me, or does anyone else feel like these companies try to gouge us as much as possible? Exxon Mobil made 100 Billion dollars in one quarter, but they aren't gouging... right.... and now DVD's we can buy for 5-15 bucks now we are going to have to pay over 20? They pass on the cost to us. At least microsoft takes a hit on the 360 becuase it is an investment to sell it cheaper, and then make money in the long run.
- nozol03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if it is a bad omen that when I saw this article, this is what I saw:
http://img445.imageshack.us/img445/7640/badomen0zq.jpg - ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"People complaining about the price are stupid. This is for MOVIES, not the disc. This pricing is barely higher than current DVDs. Considering it only costs 15% to 20% more to buy the HD version, that is very good.
RTFA BEFORE YOU BITCH ABOUT PRICING!"
When I walk into a Costco the prices are exactly the same. - Mr_Lyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, how quickly people forget about this technology's horrible copy protection. I'm willing to bet that 80% of the people who are pimping this as the greatest thing ever, don't even own a HDCP compatible inputs on their tvs...I wish we could have a webpage with pictures of people's faces the 1st time they put a blu-ray or hd-dvd movie into their 700$ player just to realize that quality isn't even as good as the high definition braodcast they're used to watching on tv...
- Xipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hey, Betamax was the better format, VHS just got broader market penetration for whatever reason."
Whatever reason = the Porn industry. So far Blu-ray seems to be holding the lead with them. - mexter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Spidermanfreak(1), do you even have a clue about what words mean when you string them together? The storage capacity of the discs has little to do with the cost of their production. There'll be a large initial investment, since the production of the physical discs is apparently quite different from that of CDs, DVD's or HD-DVD's.
IMO, Sony will have to sell the players at a loss in order to stand a chance in the video market. If the players AND the media are too expensive, then the only area these things will be successful will be in the PS3. - craftgir, on 01/13/2009, -0/+0And Netflix charges an extra dollar a month for Blu Ray disks.
http://denondvdplayers.weebly.com - nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not a chance... I don't care WHAT they cost, until someone comes out with an affordable combo HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player, I'm not TOUCHING that format (I'm not paying for a format war) - and with the level of DRM they're adding, I may simply not touch it at all...
N. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, for all we know they'll both still be around 5 years down the line (assuming holodiscs remain vaporware.)
Look at the DVD+/- format war that never was... - newtype1089, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0blu-ray all the way!!! baby and I think it is awesome DVD-UMD combos now I would never buy a UMD for my psp because If I pay for a movie I wanna be able to do more with it then if I download it a DLed movie I can burn or convert to mp4 and put on my psp a UMD is useless to me if I dont have my psp with me the 2 2gether is a match made in heaven add blu-ray to the mix and u just hit a gold mine
- vick04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0STFU NOOBS! Why are you even here if you dont like reading? i just dont get it....
For the last time
"17.95 is not for blank discs. It isn't for discs at all. It is the wholesale cost of existing MOVIES to be released on BluRay. The actual disc costs a lot less. RTFA people." - AlKo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure how Sony is going to be "allowed" to sell Blu-ray discs at that price by the major movie and media companies. Everyone knows they've become more and more terribly greedy as their margins swell from the continuing drop in costs and they continue to want more and more out of their current business model.
If Sony dictates this pricing to their partners, I'm sure they'll most likely rebel especially with the large cost of retooling for Blu-ray production. MPAA partners have no track record of being long-term minded at all. Heck, majority of businesses PERIOD are short-sighted...
While Sony says this is the price... I highly doubt we'll see $29 BRDiscs in our local retailers if the studios have anything to say about it. $45-50 MSRPs seems about right.
UMD & DVD bundling is pretty much a cover to attempt to entrench and skirt the issue that DRM on movies and media should NOT be the norm. They're just supporting their current DRM business model while making a few extra bucks since there really isn't added value if the PSP was a more open device like other media players. - theprez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Geeez....if blu-ray discs were free some people would still bitch about it"
Free bluray would completely blow. - a1532b, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2beeeeta max
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@owdenbowden
Bonsai is a small tree. I think you meant Banzai. Unless of course, you were trying to be funny. In which case, I apologize. :) - cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i want good content more than good quality or atleast for now my dvd's look good enough. im type of person who likes to wait and see what happens to new technology when if first comes our. you know intel apple. bugs. like my psp. took back to best buy now 3 times for dead pixels. not one to buy extended warranties but lucked out with that one.17.95 for blu ray media. dont think ill pay that. took me 3 years to get dvd burner after they came out and that was just because the prive drop on the media. now if sony would make a umd burner and media i would probably get one of those babies.
- tbonecopper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too expensive, and it doesn't matter if it's wholesale or retail.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only idiots early adopt. DVDs are good enough for now, I plan to wait another 5 or 10 years before I buy into a new format; and even then, I'm netflixing everything.
When it comes to buying movies, the only way to win is.. not to play. - JonisKAOS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a paradox........
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the hell is a DVD?
I dont want blue rays shining on my CDs anywho. - Siljmonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First of all guy above me, upconverting is the stupidest thing in the world.
The PS3 will probably be the cheapest, or most functional use of the blu-ray players. Look at it this way. the blu-ray will drive the price of DVDs down, and when that happens everyone will rush to buy them. The money the companies make will be used to make more blu-rays, effectivly pushing those prices down.
"For fracks sake, why are you people talking about it as if your going to buy it??? did we all forget about the rootkit fiasco??? Yes I know sony bmg is a different entity, but they are still part of the name sony...
matrixxx1 posted by matrixxx1"
Wow, you just contradicted yourself there.
Sony of America and Sony of Japan are TWO DIFFERENT COMPANIES
They do not follow eachothers values and rules. The rootkit was a mistake, a big mistake, that even Sony BMG admits and apologized for. Its over, get over it. So what if a leading creator and supplier of advanced technology screwed up, it doesnt make them all the way evil. - staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"First of all guy above me, upconverting is the stupidest thing in the world."
yo, i don't see why it's stupid.......it's less than $140 for making the dvd's that we own (I own more than 150 titles) look so much better, prettier, and more pristine.
Moreoever, who ever said that the PS3 will upconvert to 1080i or 1080p....
And when the heck is that thing coming out in the first place.......?
C'mon, dishing out $140 bucks or so for the time being to take advantage of our pretty HD sets is nothing! - staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Upconverting is stupid because if you feed an SD signal to an HDTV, it'll upconvert it too"
No it won't....it'll be 480i!
Unless you have/own an HDtv that does that for you...... - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Upconverting is stupid because if you feed an SD signal to an HDTV, it'll upconvert it too. Paying extra for an upconverting DVD player is like printing out a digital photo and then paying to have it blown up to 8.5x11 instead of just printing it out at 8.5x11 in the first place.

That "l" key is tricky I know... - madmathmatician, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Geeez....if blu-ray discs were free some people would still bitch about it"
"Free bluray would completely blow."
LOL - staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"too expensive, and it doesn't matter if it's wholesale or retail"
Dude, are you living in your imagination? - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hey, Betamax was the better format, VHS just got broader market penetration for whatever reason."
"Whatever reason = the Porn industry. So far Blu-ray seems to be holding the lead with them."
Actually, some porn HD-DVDs are already out. And VHS won against Betamax because Sony wanted to charge royalties for companies to use a Betamax cassette.
They try and try for their proprietary formats to become the standard and fail miserably. Betamax lost to VHS. Super-Disk* lost to CD-ROM. Mini-Disc didn't replace Audio-CD like they hoped. Memory Stick, along with XD and a few others, failed to become the standards that SecureDigital and CompactFlash became. And UMD is just a joke...
* The super-disc Sony/Philips/Nintendo fiasco is what lead the evolution of the SNES CD to become the PlayStation. Complete with a control that was just a SNES pad with handles. - CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think its unlikely that the consumer will get the discs at $17.95 each, I think that's how much they will cost to be made and how much Sony will charge the Stores for them. Which means once it gets to the Consumer the discs will be about $35.90 each.
I'm pretty much just planing to sit this war out, I'm happy with DVDs and I don't see myself owning a HDTV for another 6 years. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are only going to be around for 3 years (5 years at most) before Holo-discs hit the market. I rather wait for them then re-buy my movies now and then have to do it again in a few years. - Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0more like they're charging you 18 dollars for it because they want that to be the opening price for blank media, applying the 'piracy tax' they want to, but cant get passed in congress (except in canada)
Its probably worth actually 50 cents to a dollar in terms of actual manufacturing/salary costs, but you will buy them for 18 bucks, they'll sell them for 18 bucks. - cameraman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think I'm going to sit this format war out and just keep my DVD movies and wait till they start letting everyone download content. Grant it, I'll choose a format for archiving my data, but I'll probably continue to buy DVDs for a while.
- merdeisel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0staticten,
ill vouch for that... i have the same one. it kicks ass. - cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The idea of a bundled UMD with either a DVD or Blu-Ray movie is genious. Everyone who gets a PS3 will practically have to buy a PSP with it, as they can get movies for both players and will have (hopefully) well integrated connectivity features between the two devices. Now if only developers would produce some truly great games on the PSP...
- ZarZax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its ok because they DRM it so you can only watch the movie once.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Solarwinds: I'd like to know where you can buy a legal copy of a recent movie on optical medium for under $1. Even the budget bin at HMV doesn't have them that cheap.
Another thing to note, people, is that this is just Sony Pictures' pricing. Other studios that are in the BluRay camp will have different pricing, higher and lower. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sigh. For the last time, $17.95 is not for blank discs. It isn't for discs at all. It is the wholesale cost of existing MOVIES to be released on BluRay. The actual disc costs a lot less. RTFA people.
