- dieselstation, on 10/11/2007, -66/+270I honestly don't see why people hate Blu-Ray so much? The arguments FOR HD-DVD seem pretty lame. So let's just get all the silly stuff out of the way.
1. Blu-Ray = More capacity. 25GB/layer (Blu-Ray) vs 15GB/layer (HD-DVD)
2. Porn WILL NOT be the deciding factor in this. Ask yourself, when was the last time you actually bought porn on a disc?
3. HD-DVD = better name. OMG.. who the hell CARES what the name is. If you're choosing sides based on the NAME.. then i've got DVD-GOLD-PLATINUM discs to sell you.
4. Blu-Ray = more studio support
5. Blu-Ray = Sony. Well.. yes.. but it's not JUST Sony. Sony had a HUGE part in it, but the companies behind Blu-Ray are vast and varied. Blu-Ray is going to be very important in many markets. Gaming, Media, Movies, PC Drives, Players, Software, Studios, etc.. IT WILL NOT be like other proprietary Sony formats. - MagnumVP, on 10/11/2007, -16/+135I don't hear a lot of Blue Ray haters I just hear a lot of. Who cares... Lets just make one the standard and get on with making GREAT QUALITY DVD's. I'm tired of having to decide.
- Mamesj, on 10/11/2007, -15/+82Assuming that wasn't just a rhetorical question, lets take a look at what you get for $200 more:
--a high quality, upscaling DVD player (go check AVS for more about this--it's on par with super high end players)
--a PS3
--a PS2
--a PS1
--automatic updates in case a movie needs higher firmware.
--and lots of other general media functions that you may or may not use.
If that isn't worth $200 more to you, then...well, lets just leave it at that. - spadefoot, on 10/11/2007, -11/+74 I don't think Blockbuster fully considered what it may have just thrown away. The only reason I go to blockbuster anymore is to make backups of the movies I rent
I don't mean to be picky, but you misspelled "steal". Perhaps they spell it "backup" where you come from, but in most places, backup are copies you make of things that are yours. I suppose you could be engaged in a truly altruistic endeavor to backup your local Blockbuster's entire inventory as a favor... - rmw132, on 10/11/2007, -30/+87And so the PlayStation 3 gets the last laugh...
- bradallen18, on 10/11/2007, -9/+59@MagnumVP
If there were only one company making the "next-gen" disc, the price wouldn't drop as fast because of competition. - STKD, on 10/11/2007, -25/+74"A tipster at an unnamed retailer"
...Was this retailer perhaps a Sony store? - thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -10/+54"Who in the world goes into blockbuster anymore!? Thats what I want to know."
That is a lame article. Blockbuster buys a ton of movies every year so whether you get off your fat ass to pick up DVDs or not, many people still do and it is a big impact. Also, they are a major competitor with Netflix now so don't be so quick to cast the aside. - Wrathernaut, on 10/11/2007, -24/+62I contest the HD-DVD has a better name Blu-Ray bullet.
HD-DVD sounds tol similar, and ask yourself, with all the HD this, and HD that, do you even hear HD any more than you hear Extreme! X-treme! or any of its derivitives in packaging?
Blu-Ray sounds different, it does not simply evoke more playing DVDs on your HD-TV. One sounds like a minor upgrade, the other sounds like something new. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38And don't forget you can run Gentoo or Fedora Hat Linux!
(I just finished installing LInux on mine, and honestly before hand I hated to even play with Linux but now it's like a new passion) - Gyroxide, on 10/11/2007, -5/+42I felt that Blu-Ray was going to take the lead, but I just didn't see it coming in the form of Blockbuster support. Something does seem just a little strange about the article, with the unnamed source and retail chain, but anything is possible. As a disclaimer I own a PS3 so don't count me in the "SONY should close down" camp, but still, I would be wary about this information. Wait for more reports.
As long as one format comes out on top I honestly don't care who "wins". - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -17/+49Wow... this is huge! People still rent at Blockbuster?!?
- hsoj, on 10/11/2007, -6/+38For those who say HD-DVD is a better name,
Go to Amazon.com and read reviews for, say, the Planet Earth HD-DVD set. Most, if not all, of the reviews where people were dissatisfied with their purchase were people who bought the HD-DVD's without knowing they needed an HD-DVD player to use them.
People assume if they have an HD-TV, they can play HD-DVD's. No, that doesn't make sense to you and I, but I can't help but think this has played a factor in the war somehow.

But still I'm sure both formats will screw you...so pick your poison.
- BassCadet, on 10/11/2007, -21/+50I switched from Netflix to Blockbuster.
For the same amount of money as my Netflix account I can do Blockbuster and I have the ability of taking my discs into a store (and they are everywhere), and pick a movie that fits my whim for the night. You can't do that with Netflix. PLUS you get one free game rental a month.
I am no friend of Blockbusters, but it's a good deal for people like me. And you can bet that going exclusively Blu-Ray is going to make a difference. The first nail in the HD-DVD coffin has been hammered. - mooninite, on 10/11/2007, -27/+54blam8, Blu-ray players will have these features this fall.
Your argument will become *moot* in a matter of months. Why don't you go hate on something else?
No, I don't own a PS3... or a PSP... I don't have anything Sony, actually. Get off the "OMG I HATE SONY" bandwagon. - Falldog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27I'm fairly sure he's talking about the inevitable re-release of pretty much every movie in high def format.
- TheFinestShadow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27This isn't even reliable. The announcement by Blockbuster was what, two days ago? Besides, the blog cites a "tipster at an unnamed retailer" and there are no numbers to back up the claim at all.
I'm not for or against either format really - I just wish the corporate market would quit screwing us over and make one format the standard. - FriendsOfWario, on 10/11/2007, -4/+29Good thing I called ms.cleo on this one.
- kenvsryu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Media controls hardware.
- jensenej, on 10/11/2007, -9/+30Blockbuster online blu-ray dvd's have been tough to get for months - so they're getting demand there!
- monkeyrun, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27Their online totalaccess is quite irresistible.
- untzboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24Dude, check the thread on the (digg) story. It's called blackspotting, someone in the production line did their job wrong, causing the coating to MELT _IN_ the factory, not rotting, which takes time; it's no different than the 360 getting the ring of death, someone just screwed up.
- kris33, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21The porn factor is just bull. Porn is already available on both formats.
- Wrathernaut, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Agreed, for the non-early adopters, it does not matter, so long as one wins.
My PS3 will continue to be a great gaming machine whether Blu-Ray succeeds or not, so I'm not out several hundred dollars if it fails, as opposed to HD-DVD player purchasers, who will have nothing but a betamax player if they lose the format war. - Rileyper, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20I did see that problem on the pirates discs BUT its not Blu Ray's fault blame disney for not making the flash menus ITS the idiot designer who threw it together. Blame the source not the industry. Your blaming a tree for dropping an apple on your head
- sjbdallas, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Mine sells tattoo magazines and cotton candy in foil bags.
- izzybomb, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20My parents love blockbuster. With the online ordering then turning them in at the store for free movies, we go there almost once a week as well as receive the online orders.
- SuMizzle, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21Keep holdin' on to that.
- sjbdallas, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17@RICK2K
Ssshhhh, the movie studios count on guys that will rebuy everything. You're going to blow it for them. - JFetch, on 10/11/2007, -14/+28I don't know how much stock I put into this unknown retailer that has a slow enough turn around in selling HD-DVD players that customers have time to cancel them. It's a HD-DVD player. You walk in and buy it. They aren't back ordered.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16what blu-ray player is priced at $399?
Also, to add to the person above's list. You can store music, pictures, movies, and downloadable games into the harddrive. Stream content from your mac or pc to it, connect keyboards, and other USB devices to it for use with it's web browser or Linux OS. - NeoTechni, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14"Who the hell wants physical media anymore anyway?"
HDTV owners. Coincidentally, guess who Bluray and HDDVD are targetted at? - apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14you do of course realize that a large reason that MS is backing blu-ray is to offset sonys ps3? keeping hd-dvd alive undermines the ps3's movie playing feature set, by splintering the market and makes investing in the ps3 a gamble for movie lovers.
if MS was genuinely wholeheartedly behind hd-dvd, you would have seen an hd-dvd drive included in the xbox360 elite, or at least another SKU with it included or bundled. they wouldnt have gone on the record saying that they would possibly offer a blu-ray addon [which has since been retracted]. and they wouldnt undermine their own hd-dvd drive by pushing HD movie downloads. hell, they dont even advertise the damn hd-dvd drive.
lets be honest here. the MS pr line is: "give the users the option". however, if you really look at it: i /just/ got the option to upgrade my harddrive. i /just/ got the option to have a larger memory card, and i /still/ dont have an option to watch blu-ray movies on anything other than my ps3. - SuMizzle, on 10/11/2007, -13/+25You got an HD DVD player? Sounds like you got *****.
- CYR1X, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Who the ***** watches porn on anything other than their computer?
- SuMizzle, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19This has nothing to do with Sony directly. This is about BlockBuster siding with Blu-Ray and you having bad decision making skills. Enjoy your HD DVD!
- typicalusername, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17Well, the masses will eventually... I bought Casino Royale on Blu-ray, while watching it with several friends, they started noticing things that the just plain DVD version didn't have. Features like...you could actually see the make-up with the bomb makers scars, crap like that. They totally dug the picture quality once they noticed the difference. So, if my tech ignorant friends can notice the difference, it'll only be a while till Ma and Pa want it...
We all know that resolution is addicting. I absolutely cannot watch any sports in non-HD again. My neighbor invited me to watch a game and my response was, "you got HD?"... Once he said no, there was no way I was going over there.
Yay to Blu-ray... Keep those Sony flames coming guys! - keithwired, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12yes non internet dorks still rent at blockbuster
- Wreckage, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10"HD-DVD = better name."
Actually this has been a huge problem for HD-DVD. As people have been buyingrenting HD-DVD thinking they will work in a standard DVD player. - amrush4th, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I don't give a ***** who wins, I just want a winner to get the next gen format war over with sooner rather then later
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11
Any what would be the reason for their lawsuit, Judge Judy? - HawkTail, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11What retail location is taking orders for HD DVD players? You can get them anywhere. Maybe its a small town, and they only have Blockbusters.
- ironyinc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11"Besides the video quality upgrade, what features are really going to sell these formats?"
Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray use a real programming/scripting language for extra content unlike DVD's use of prerecorded video clips. That means that very nearly anything is possible for extras; from full featured games to 3D exploration of scenes in the movie.
Both allow for PIP broadcasts, mainly to be used to provide you with a small preview of what you are fast forwarding to while you can remain watching the movie.
The creator of Java (Java Runtime Environment is part of the standard for Blu-ray players) has said that it is possible that Java and the network connectivity of Blu-ray players could be used to provide updates to the content on Blu-ray discs that aren't there at the time of pressings.
Finally, Blu-ray uses only 3 regions for their coding, while it's not region free it is a start. - rick2k, on 10/11/2007, -8/+17@mcatrage
You dont need to re buy anything you dolt. Both players play DVD's. - Mamesj, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15not sure about those numbers, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Blockbuster has more members than Netflix. and with this new online/in store program, they're going to usurp even more of the share.
which sucks, because netflix probably has a better selection. - AProgrammingGuy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Let's also not forget that the price of the PS3 will also come down, just not as fast as the players. So it'll probably be more like a $100 difference.
- Korgan, on 10/11/2007, -11/+19Wow more anti-Bluray FUD from engadget and AVS. What a surprise.
- sjbdallas, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Too bad emos and skate-betties can't afford either one then.
- Calcularius, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9add Folding@Home FTW!
