- gvoakes, on 07/06/2009, -0/+20Pretty sweet that you can fit that kind of power and capability in the size of a shoebox.
- bigwophh, on 07/06/2009, -1/+15Macs are nothing but Intel-based PCs with a different OS anyway. You're allowed to like this stuff. :)
- damack, on 07/06/2009, -0/+10Pretty impressive gaming prowess actually.
- CB810, on 07/06/2009, -2/+11I'm a Mac guy.. but this is pretty cool.
- Ricochetbiscuit, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7...and that nicely demonstrated your intellect and just a tinge of your racism. Thank you.
- HonoredMule, on 07/07/2009, -0/+51) It's hardly worth mention if you still need space for the power supply.
2) An average ATX motherboard does NOT fit in the average shoe box. - MysticKatDaddy, on 07/07/2009, -1/+5Pretty awesome for an combo HTPC and backup server
- drjekelmrhyde, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3As a server? HTCP?
- fury420, on 07/07/2009, -0/+33x as much? *****
at most your paying 25% more than an equivalent non-apple machine once you look at similar form factors/specs/ capabilities, if even possible to reproduce at the same price. I've yet to see an honest price comparison against the iMac or Mac Mini that didn't cut corners & leave you with a full-sized ATX case & mobo, a ***** LCD panel, or left out the optical audio in/out, the firewire 800, etc... - MWeather, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Maybe he meant mini-ATX.
- seclife321, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3I'm not sure what the status is now, but ITX boards were notorious for breaking quickly. I do like the appeal of a small pc, but I'm sticking with my traditional gaming rig until someone like Asus starts making these boards.
- Myztry, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3It's about they rethought the form factors for PC's. The IBM PC AT(X) form factors is redundant. There is no need for ISA/PCI slots with most of that functionallity replacable with USB. There is no need for desktop cases built to withstand deep heavy CRT's. Towers have always been ugly huge voids of space. And I'm not talking about copy-a-like cubes using microATX boards either.
The actual PC form factor should take advantage of modern advances like LCD's & USB. Offload the USB access to an intergrated LCD hub where it is easily accessible. Utilitize the space under the LCD where the leg goes. Utilize the space behind the shallow LCD screen.
It would be completely practical to go as far as screen free laptops. Screens are everywhere making it near pointless taking one with you. Pick up the 'desktop' computer and go. Besides the obvious VGA/DVI screens their is also an increasing number of HDMI displays in lounge rooms and all over the place.
The day of the 'beige' (well black/silver is the new beige) needs to end. In a perfect world we'd have roamable wireless HD screen connections but in the mean time, it's really not that hard to plug a cable into the never ending array of displays. - Cybrwolf, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2These are the kind of systems that rock for LAN parties!
- rednaxela825, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2NVIDIA Ion isn't really an Atom alternative. More like an upgrade.
- Wreckage, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2For those who missed it Ion 2 is supposed to be coming at the end of the year.

This should make Atom a bit more video friendly - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2Speaking of small computers, I wish OQO hadn't gone under. I always wanted one of those little things.
- explodingzebras, on 07/07/2009, -1/+21) USB is not the answer to everything, USB soundcards don't compare to PCI / PCI-Express cards
2) Its good to have a PC case that is strong enough to withstand the odd knock and scrape.
3) Screenless laptop is pointless as screens are not everywhere u go. - PissedSheep, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Only if the laptop is packing a standard PCI-E x16 full-height video card and a quad core. Then yes. And also, where did you find it cause I want one.
- Myztry, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1LOL. Some people just don't like the idea of option. It must threaten the status quo.
- Gibletoid, on 07/07/2009, -2/+2I agree, I have a new Mac mini, and the fact it's only 2 inches high by 6.5 inches square and silent is half of it's appeal, and most the reason I never turn on my Windows PC.
Computers don't need to be so appliance like. This is the way it's going, and has been for a while.
You don't need to have a big case for a workhorse machine if the design and choice of the components is good, whether you build it yourself or buy it that way.
Even though the new mini is the low end of the scale at Mac, it still has C2D 2.0ghz, 4 gigs of ram, and a 9400m vid chip. What it means at the end of the day, is it can run Crysis, in low detail at 1600x1200, 20-30fps.
I'm glad more PC's are looking to go this way, much like Shuttle.
Motherboard manufacturers have been spoiled for too long, as it's easy to design a new motherboard in an AT or ATX form factor. They need to challenge themselves, and half the size. - Gibletoid, on 07/08/2009, -0/+0the kind that is a pentium 4 with 5 PCI and 2 ISA (one shared) with AGP video.
Whatever AT* form factor that is, fits exactly, side to side, with room to spare, in a shoe box.
You picky freaks. - PacoLugi, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1So its a laptop without the screen, keyboard, and battery? That would make it small.
- Myztry, on 07/07/2009, -1/+1Firstly, I'm talking an additional modern OPTION.
1) There's not a lot of functionallity that can't be provided over USB. Onboard sound is quite decent these days (even optical connections are fairly standard) but get a full desktop for niche requirements.
2) Sure, feel free. Tanks are great in some situations too - but not all.
3) Personally I find attached notebook screens a nuisance. They spend a fair amount of time 'docked' and they just get in the way. Maybe detachable/optionable screens would be better. - chessthecat, on 07/07/2009, -2/+1Maybe if you're a hobo. Personally I'd rather spend a few bucks and buy something that's actually useful.
- Gibletoid, on 07/07/2009, -2/+0I have built a PC in an Airwalk shoe box, with the power supply on the outside.
An ATX motherboard fits perfectly in the average show box. - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -4/+0@Gibletoid
That's what this article is about macretard. Mini-ITX = generally an Atom processor = as small as the board inside your $2000 PoS macbook.
Go pretend to be writing a novel at Starbucks. - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -6/+0@Ricochetbiscuit
I wouldn't want Romanian peasants assembling my components either, *****. The Chinese ones just happen to be doing it at the moment. - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -10/+3... and while your're liking this stuff consider the fact that you're paying 3x as much as you should for a bunch of Foxconn chips put together by Chinese peasants, a stock Intel processor, and a shiny plastic case.
Way to be, you ***** moron. - chessthecat, on 07/07/2009, -12/+1At least they'll fit nicely in my garbage can which is where this ***** belongs.
