- sjbdallas, on 07/07/2009, -0/+89When I first read this, I thought "What kind of idiot would fall for this"? Then I realized that it's no different than the free blackberry I got for signing a 2 year contract with t-mobile to the tune of 50 bucks a month.
- freakish_beast, on 07/07/2009, -0/+54just like cell phone plans....
- dikaiosyne, on 07/07/2009, -0/+42"a neat net gain of around $1,050 off the deal"...IF they didn't provide service. Poorly written article.
- chadchadbinks, on 07/06/2009, -0/+34Good article at Engadget about how this is completely not worth it...three-cell battery and $60 a month for the service.... $1,440 pre-tax total for 2-year minimum agreement. As Engadget pointed out, it would be more worth it to get a jump-drive to haul around...cost is just way too high.
- TheBifman, on 07/07/2009, -9/+38This is ***** stupid, no different from cell phone promos. Buried
- dvsbastard, on 07/07/2009, -0/+25Except even if you bought your own phone, you would still have to pay the same monthly charge for your service - the only difference is you wouldn't be locked to it for 2 years...
- jdmulloy, on 07/07/2009, -0/+21Why can't I have a good sound system?
- kevinkace, on 07/07/2009, -1/+20"neat net gain of around $1,050 off the deal"
Ummm, wireless service has a cost, as does customer service, running a store/mall kiosk, etc... - zeth006, on 07/07/2009, -1/+19Like iPhone owners?
- ethanator1088, on 07/06/2009, -2/+20Here is a free set of car tires and a free state of the art Bose surround sound system. You just have to buy the $30k car.
- bigmahlman, on 07/07/2009, -0/+14whats the early termination fee?
- Gragoon, on 07/06/2009, -0/+14... but if you were thinking of getting the broadband capability anyway, it is not so bad, don't you think? I think most broadband air card plans go for about $60 per month. This is basically the same deal most cell phones come with.
- udayd, on 07/07/2009, -0/+12wait...am i the the only one seeing that 6 sentences doesn't quality as an aritcle? this thing completely lacks any sort of details:
i love porn. it is great. something.com charges $1.00 for it. nothing else does. free porn is good. something.com is ripping us off.
what the *****?
EDIT: 7 sentences. count 'what the *****?' and we're even - deltron, on 07/07/2009, -0/+10you have to have proof of return on the laptop to terminate the contract.
- 4g3nt_Smith, on 07/07/2009, -1/+10But, if the ETF is the same pretty-standard $175, you basically get a $175.99 netbook...
- bigmahlman, on 07/07/2009, -0/+9well *****.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+9why hasnt this happened earlier? theyve been subsidizing $200 cellphones for years.... not many people seem to have a problem with that....
- BREZZZ, on 07/07/2009, -2/+10It's not bad if you want the service and the computer. While the contract might be a bit much the cost is pretty fair for a comparable service and you get a laptop with a built in modem that might be pricier elsewhere. It's just the idiots who only want the computer and feel "suckered" into this because they are retarded that raise a stink.
- the8thbit, on 07/07/2009, -1/+9You'll never use your data service, because you'll never be in range.
***** Sprint. - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -1/+9You don't have to have a contract to have a cell phone...
Don't be such a victim. - Soniti, on 07/07/2009, -2/+8b--b-b--b-b-b-ut... Blackberry!!
- nymphetamine, on 07/06/2009, -0/+6What kind of car?
- deltron, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6Anyone else thinking "WTF" about that picture of the guy with the shaving cream?
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Question... what's the normal monthly fee? If it's still $60 then it isn't as bad as they make it seem.
- smacksaw, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Best Buy and Sprint working together has got to be a sign of the coming apocalypse. That's worse news than Kim Jong-Il and Osama Bin Laden working together.
- nbaughman, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5crackberry
- MScrip, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5If I was planning on spending $60 a month for mobile computer broadband... I'd just get a USB 3G stick or a MiFi.
Why? Because I'd rather use it on any computer. A netbook one day... a 15" laptop the next day... a friend's laptop while traveling... etc.
I'd hate to have to use this netbook for 2 years.. and *only* this netbook for mobile internet access.
$60 a month for one netbook vs. $60 a month for *any* notebook... seems like a no-brainer to me. - Tubal22, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Bingo. They act like you'd never use the data service that you're actually paying for.
- Atario, on 07/07/2009, -1/+6If you think providing that service is costing Sprint anywhere near a *fraction* that much, I have a bridge to sell you.
- Shaggy3, on 07/07/2009, -2/+7Yes, it is no different from cell phone promos.
That is the point of the article. - nmessick, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4... and what does it cost ot own an iPhone over the length of that contract?
- EtherGnat, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4And even if you bought your own Netbook and wanted to get 3G service for it, you would still have to pay the same monthly charge for your service - the only difference is you wouldn't be locked to it for 2 years...
- stickstickly, on 07/07/2009, -1/+5ill take this, and a Monster hdmi cable...
- roguewriter, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Well this article convinced me. It convinced me I should rehab my old Libretto 70ct into a nice little linux netbook, assuming I can find a linux friendly wireless card for it.
- ElAmo, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3and be sure to get the deluxe geek squad service plan on your way out.
- veriix, on 07/07/2009, -1/+4I think I'll just pay the $400 and get the free wireless service, thanks. Oh wait...there's no such thing as free wireless service? I MUST BE A ***** IDIOT.
- LostOverThere, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Except for that contract to be cancelled you have to return the laptop.
Evil contracts are Evil. - nbaughman, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3but you can plug those into a notebook that isn't a piece of crap. compaq = garbage.
- phyx726, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3An unlocked flagship smartphone for each respective company usually costs about 100-200 more than a netbook. So, since you're paying about 150-200 for a phone with a 2 year service plan, it really is about the same thing.
- GumGuts, on 07/07/2009, -1/+4That's gross profit... We don't really know what kind of cost go along with it, so we can't really say what the net is.
- robbob, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3Sprinting over for some Best Buy BS
- Nysul, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Actually this could be a decent deal if you already have the phone that you want, your contract is up, and you're already (or willing to be) paying for data. My contract is over and I have the phone I want, but the phone isn't CDMA so I'm not interested.
- itsbob, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3Its like the old bend over and take the AOL days
- 3The3Dude3, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2The only way there to have a net gain of $1k+ on the $.99 Netbook, would be if monthly fees and contracts only existed when accompanied by the Netbook.
- ThirdPrize, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3Mobile broadband? Ha! 3G is like dial up but a little bit faster.
- bradleyland, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Except a cell phone is pretty much worthless without a plan. A netbook has plenty of utility without a wireless data plan.
- ImperialSoren, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3From my past experience and today I believe sprint has people schill digging
- petska, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3this was bound to happen with the expanding data plans available. Next big thing will be exxon funding free to cheap gasoline auto's.. to compete with costlier EV's. You just have to pay for the gasoline ; )
- djcurry, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2The other carriers are doing the same thing AT&T and Verizon charge $200 for the netbook with a contract while with Sprint it is free
