- agsinger, on 07/07/2008, -16/+555I refuse to support any organization that bends to the RIAA's will. They think they are gods or something. I for one will continue to support independent artists and not give a penny to any RIAA artist. Also, I will not give any money to organizations that cave to the RIAA.
- projectstartrek, on 07/07/2008, -9/+394***** THE RIAA!
- shogan191, on 07/07/2008, -5/+293That can't be right, can it?
- arivall, on 07/08/2008, -12/+288This is why I build computers.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -6/+227Yikes, I had no idea the RIAA has been reaching out this far. The fascists seem completely intent on destroying the future of technology as it is.
Let's not give up the fight!

http://riaaradar.com - DeathBot, on 07/07/2008, -12/+232I'm with Agsinger on this one. The RIAA does nothing but bully people into paying them money they don't deserve. None of the money the RIAA makes by suing people goes back to the artists. It all goes to the lawyers to fuel the lawsuit machine to make more money, to fund more lawsuits... etc., etc., etc.
- bdbr, on 07/08/2008, -14/+219Check the links on this ***** article. One is about an XP audio problem that was solved by downloading a driver, another about driver issues on multiple brand computers (the alleged $99 fix, also solved by downloading drivers), and another complaining about Microsoft without even mentioning Dell. Apparently there are some driver issues with Sigmatel audio, but a lot of companies use Sigmatel (hence the multi-vendor issue). Buried for being grossly (and probably intentionally) inaccurate.
- nvisn, on 07/08/2008, -13/+143***** THING SUCKS!
- Murdats, on 07/08/2008, -3/+132so how do i go about building a laptop?
- Dmatias, on 07/08/2008, -7/+126Damn you all to dell!
- SinisterSaracen, on 07/08/2008, -9/+88Tell you what Dell, I'll give you the FINGER for FREE!
- 0ceanic, on 07/08/2008, -5/+77i guess it means if you pay the $99, then you are allowed to download music off the internet.
- ratboy4001, on 07/07/2008, -11/+82Bargin?
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -2/+72Buy the extra 'a' for $9.99.
- therealdeal101, on 07/08/2008, -3/+69Or in other words: ***** THE RIAA!
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -9/+70Who needs audio anyway when you've got a flaming battery melting on your lap?
- Classicgamer, on 07/08/2008, -1/+59THERE'S NO SOUND THERE!
- superkendall, on 07/08/2008, -4/+61I have a good mind to bury you for posting rational thought and actual investigative work on Digg!
- yeskia, on 07/08/2008, -4/+56This ***** copied the article from Reddit and managed to keep the typos.
Nice ***** work. - inactive, on 07/08/2008, -8/+55...Me.
.__. - Kosher1947, on 07/08/2008, -3/+47Colleges, and schools.
- nericus, on 07/08/2008, -1/+46Actually, I'd think the protest is more the RIAA treating every single user of the internet (and some that are not) as thieves, and now making the hardware companies do the same. They've become a rabid pitbull that is just biting at everyone, and the artists won't/can't put that beast down.
I won't purchased HD/Blu-ray for much the same reasoning. Treat me like a thief, then I'll act like a thief. - houndeyex, on 07/08/2008, -2/+46The ***** does a sound card have to do with the RIAA? It has the capability to play illegal MP3s and therefore must be disabled? Hell, let's kill people. They're the ones that download them in the first place. Disable away!
- pigfister, on 07/08/2008, -2/+44stop calling them the RIAA name the companies.
The BPI Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The RIAA Soundexchange Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The IFPI Are: The same anti consumer lot as listed above!
The MPAA Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX. - insertAliasHere, on 07/08/2008, -2/+43That's what I thought at first too, but as I read the article, I realized that I've actually had this exact problem. I have an Inspiron E1505, and I was trying to record a some internet radio because I couldn't listen at the time, and no matter what software I tried, I couldn't record any audio from the sound card. I eventually just gave up, because it wasn't something I really cared to do more than once. This is very disturbing.
- cph1, on 07/08/2008, -3/+42Funny, I have a dell laptop and ran into the same problem awhile ago.
There is no $99 fix needed, all you have to do is go to the sigmatel website and download the drivers from them. - inactive, on 07/08/2008, -1/+40Well you can't do it live because the damn thing wont record.
- sabster, on 07/07/2008, -7/+46dell is getting effed in the a by the riaa.. what bitches.
- jtbell04, on 07/08/2008, -1/+39REGISTRY? WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!
- joegibes, on 07/08/2008, -3/+40I'm writing this on my day-old XPS...
I downloaded the driver from the link at the end of the article and stereo mix works just fine. - dha07030, on 07/08/2008, -24/+59Who the hell still buys Dells?
- TheInformer, on 07/08/2008, -1/+36To enable the spelling checker, it requires another $29.95 :^)
- TheInformer, on 07/08/2008, -3/+37This isn't any different than many of the political articles posted on Digg. Fanciful claims, little research.
Kudos for your work, bdbr! - DoctorLag, on 07/08/2008, -0/+33True, but how about posting some info on it next time?
I added this registry info to about 50 of my organization's Dell Optiplex 745s because a faculty member used this stereo mix function to teach his class.
One option was to change the 01 values on lines 279 and 280 in the ADIHdAud.inf file (audio driver inf) to 00 as follows (MonR change may not be needed but I did it anyway) and then install the modified driver.
HKR,AD1983Disable, OutR, 1, 00
HKR,AD1983Disable, MonR, 1, 00
Source: http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php/ ...
I was also able to do it through a simple registry edit:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 000AD1983Disable]
"OutR"=hex:00
"MonR"=hex:00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet002ControlClass{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 000AD1983Disable]
"OutR"=hex:00
"MonR"=hex:00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 000AD1983Disable]
"OutR"=hex:00
"MonR"=hex:00
You have to reboot for the registry settings to take.
Once that is done, the Stereo Mix volume control is available under the notification area system volume control. Right-click -> Open Volume Control -> Options -> Properties -> Recording (radio button); check “Stereo Mix” -> OK; then select the “Stereo Mix” volume control and adjust as needed. Then you can use the default “Microsoft Sound Mapper – Input” device under Audacity’s settings (or whatever application you need to use). - NecroSexy, on 07/08/2008, -4/+36I can see the future now: RIAA genetically modifying babies with the inability to hear.
- haydesigner, on 07/08/2008, -0/+32You seriously think 3% of your salary is NOT THAT HIGH???
- Norumeni, on 07/08/2008, -0/+32@ dandonia: WORST idea ever! If there is a tax such as you propose, then the media industry would just become another 'branch' of government, it would become even less original, and spreading the money out in proportion to ratings and popularity is such an awful idea, because there would be too much opportunity for fraud and for the large media corporations to force their ideas upon the public (They could say, "This show is popular! Watch it!" when in reality it isn't that popular but it drowns out other popular media that may represent or present a message contrary to their intentions, which is how they would eventually muscle out all the little guys at the beginning of this media tax you propose).
You say some people don't use the internet, and that's true, but comparing media and internet use to health care and employment insurance is very wrong; these are basic needs that fill a potentially universal void, media is superfluous and not necessarily needed though it is nice.
Forcing a tax on the ISP's isn't going to fix things either; there is no way they would pay this while "keeping their service up and price down", Never! This just doesn't make sense from a business standpoint! It's a nice thought, but it will never happen, because no corporation is out there to be nice and pick up the tab for the little guy, they're out for your money and as much as they can squeeze out of you, and don't try to say something like, "They could pick up the tab for me and have one more loyal customer!" - No; there's a sucker born ever second, they know this and you know it; all the smart people know this. - crownedgriffin, on 07/08/2008, -0/+31To have purchased that much, you obviously weren't that pissed off...
Also, call late at night and you get tech support people from either Canada or Oklahoma. - wafflez, on 07/08/2008, -1/+32dissabled audio ports.
- diggenerate, on 07/08/2008, -9/+39There is a HUGE difference between "stealing" and what we in the know call FAIR USE!
- Bisquick, on 07/08/2008, -0/+30Yeah, the RIAA is bargin' in!
/pun - inactive, on 07/08/2008, -1/+30http://repair4laptop.org/notebook_barebone_selfmad ...
Its not pretty but it gets the work done. - shawnanigans, on 07/08/2008, -0/+28You say that as a joke but the tax on blank media in Canada has been used to justify downloading music.
- Murdats, on 07/08/2008, -4/+30you really should get that macbook looked at, I know apple didnt really advertise the issue but i think they did initiate a callback.
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -0/+26Why would you need consumer tech support? Even if you get a native English speaker they don't have any amazing insight. Chances are you know more about computers than they do.
- kjc5050, on 07/07/2008, -8/+34Slightly OT, but Dell's customer service (outsourced to India) is utterly atrocious. Over the past 10 years I've purchased 3 Dell desktops, a laptop, and an Axim PDA. At this point, however, having dealt with their CS reps several times, I'd struggle to ever buy anything from them again.
- Llanowar, on 07/08/2008, -2/+27I think a lot of people on digg just buy components.
- aimhelix, on 07/08/2008, -7/+31Wow, didn't realize Dell was now the RIAA's bitch.
- mixsense, on 07/08/2008, -3/+27while you're at it... ***** DELL!
- xXShadowstormXx, on 07/08/2008, -7/+30What the *****? Is this ***** even legal?
