why the ***** would you need a powerful computer to steal other people's ideas and write about the same *****? - cthornett, on 03/27/2009, -2/+18I'm surprised the Eee isn't there.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+11Do you also believe that bicycles are "a sorry excuse" for a commuter car? Different specs for different purposes. Sheesh.
- bigpappapunk, on 03/27/2009, -1/+10hahahaha *applauds*
- i4ybrid, on 03/27/2009, -1/+9Really? I don't feel like a blogger or webmaster needs anything more than a netbook. Maybe they should get a larger monitor, but in terms of power 1.6 GHz and 1GB of ram is more than enough to write some text in a browser or notepad.
- sembetu, on 03/27/2009, -1/+8A bit of advice for those choosing the Acer Aspire One...If your Aspire One comes with XP, and you want to install Linux (most likely Ubuntu) you may want to look into the following:
1. Make sure you have a spare 1GB min USB flash drive.
2. Go get unetbootin: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
3. Download Linux4One: http://www.linux4one.it/ (scroll to the bottom for english)
4. Make the bootable USB flash drive using unetbootin and Linux4One.
5. Install Linux4One.
6. Enjoy!
Seriously, I am using Linux4One on my Acer Aspire One, and it rocks. At the core it is Ubuntu, but it comes pre-tweaked just for the Aspire One, so the wifi just works, the webcam, the touchpad, power management, hardware buttons, etc. All working right away.
One more thing: If you aren't completely new to GNU/Linux / Ubuntu et. al. You will probably want to uninstall UME and the netbook gui. They are basically dumbed-down versions of the menu, and consume the entire screen. Removing them clears you to manage your desktop as you see fit. Also, if you're feeling adventurous, and you like the "Mac OS X" gui style, there is a project called Mac4Lin: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac4lin it will lead you to some more visual options. - Bones97698, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5Uhh these aren't astronomical deals by any means. The Eee PC has been hovering around $250-$300 dollars for the past 6 months and earlier this week the Dell Mini 9 was on sale for $199.
- srfrogger, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5Bah, they are even cheaper than the article suggests.
2 Days ago Dell had their mini 9 for 199, yesterday, Zip Zoom Fly had the EEEPC901 for 250. Both shipped free.
Memory prices are really low so you can buy basic and upgrade to 2gb for 20 bucks. - KSUdesigner, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5Because that link goes to the PC Mag review. This is the link you want:
http://www.pcconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detai ... - jonmlm, on 03/27/2009, -1/+6rode my bike to work in the rain yesterday. i didn't melt. neither did my msi wind.
- ThantiK, on 03/27/2009, -1/+5Got mine used off craigslist from some rich kid who wanted to join the craze...realized "why the hell do I need a netbook?"...and sold it to me for $180.
Craigslist FTW. Now I got an EEE 900a with eeebuntu 2 on it and it's amazing not only for browsing the web and all the normal things I'd do but AIRCRACK-NG and KISMET work out of the box! It's a *great* little tool for cracking WEP networks.
Downside to the EEE is the Right-hand shift key is in the "wrong" place...you have your / key...then the UP key from the arrows, THEN the shift key on the right of that. Which makes getting used to the keyboard crazy as you go to hit the shift key...but hit up instead - gets really annoying. - aeiou, on 03/27/2009, -2/+6Dell often has deals on the mini 9 with linux for $199. Thats what Im using right now and i can say Im very pleased with it. Replacement for a desktop? NO! but for what its meant for, nice little machine, and between this and my iMac, I can proudly say that I very rarely have to use Windows.
- ILoveBoobies, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4I just bought the Eee
http://www.amazon.com/1000HA-10-Inch-Netbook-Proce ...
Very happy with my purchase!! - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3mastersmite - bikes are actually a great way to get to work, especially in places like Manhattan (for many of the same reasons that netbooks are becoming common, I might add; especially-especially now that subway prices are going up by 25% again). I work in NYC, and every once in a while I even see guys in business suits on skateboards. No joke. They still look more dignified than the lone sap on his Segway ;)
- AmazingSteve, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Bought an Aspire One 2 weeks ago so I wouldn't need to lug my laptop around and it's great. Does what I need it to and it's LIGHT. Just get the 6 cell battery for it though.
- bigpappapunk, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3I picked up my Acer EEE 900 running Linux off Woot last week for $179. If you're looking to surf the net on a highly compact device then it's perfection.
- jonmlm, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4got a brand new 160gb wind on ebay for 289 (sidenote: a week later got osx 10.5.6 running perfectly on it). do digg readers really need an article to find tech deals?
- Skurt, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Spent the last day and night completely partitioning/formatting my Lenovo S10e using an 8gb flash drive to put Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 on it.
Fast little sucker 2 GB and 80GB drive and great for what it does. Surf the net, emails and the like.
Use Photoshop on it? Nope, Crunch large Excel spreadsheets? Nope, Rip/Burn DVDs? Nope, my MacBook unibody does that just fine. but the Lenovo I'd take on the plane before I'd take my MacBook - too many chances for my MacBook to get stolen/damaged/confiscated etc. And why do I need so much power on a business trip/vacation? - The Lenovo shines. Lightweight, and tiny
And yes PC Mag - they sell their reviews, I remember years ago when I worked for a major modem manufacture, PCMag asking us if we wanted the $1000 review, the $500 review or the standard review.
Never believed any magazines since... - krabat, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3My Eee PC is the best tech purchase I have made in years. It is perfect for anyone who already has a desktop and just needs something to take with them to use the Internet and play media.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3I agree. The reads as one big advertisement.
They don't go into any great detail about the products, they just mention a selling point and a price.
If there was some sort of comparison then maybe the article would have some substance. - Onion575, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Got my 900HA from newegg a couple months ago, and its excellent for internet surfing, movies, and basic work.
It even plays some old games like Warcraft 3 decently well.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - HonoredMule, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Since you have linux on there, you can easily write a little file (.xmodmap, I think) that your desktop will load on startup to remap those keys (say, switch shift and \, or change it all to shift, \, up). I had to do something similar to fix the right shift on my Aspire One to protect my sanity.
Do a Google search for xmodmap, and you'll get some tutorials that show how to easily work out the details for your keyboard and generate the file.
If the keys are identically sized, you may be able to physically swap them around to fix the labels as well. - HawgFrog, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2I got an Acer One the other day, but no Linux. It has Windows XP and some bloatware on it. I'm getting ready to wipe it clean and install Ubuntu. But, even as it is it a pretty nice little machine. The keyboard it tight, but the display is actually clear and easy to read. The model I got was $349.
I got it strictly for surfing, email, skype and other light work. Not suitable for any heavy lifting. - bigteebo, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2I'm happy with my Acer Aspire One, replacing the flaky-display EEE 701. Generally, a lot of these netbooks have the same price & specs. It's hard to go wrong with any of 'em, unless it's that awful first-gen Sylvania gOS running system.
- catachip, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2I picked up a Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu for $186 this week. They were on sale, plus a 7% student discount!
- qwertycopter, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2I was looking at the 1000HE. It fixes the main issue I had with the earlier models: the keyboard. It also has a slightly faster Atom processor (1.66 vs 1.6) and a longer battery life (they claim 9.5 hr, I'm guessing it's not that much). The price is only about $40 higher than the HA model.
Then I started reading the eee user website. A number of users have had their screens "magically" shatter (various 900 and 1000 models) despite no misuse by the user. After reading all the comments on the article it seems there might be a design flaw/defect in the eee PCs. I'm curious if any eeePC owners here have run into this problem.
Article is here:

Be sure to read the comments if you were thinking about buying one. - moose26, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2I hope nVidea can get a version of its 9400 graphics chip integrated into the motherboards of these Netbooks in the future. I would love to be able to say buy a Dell Mini 10 with a 1280x768 screen resolution. Even have a Dell Mini 9 option with similar resolution and chipset specs.
For business, I love using the Netbooks for their very small size and feature set. They fit very well on those tiny tray tables on Airplanes. Even though the keyboards and screen are small,.. I would love one for doing Web Browsing, Office document viewing/editing, AIM type messaging, photo import from a camera and viewing and maybe for a variety of internet type appliances and maybe some lightweight games like 3d chess and a simple 3d flight sim.. again... its not a gaming laptop, but simple games can be tons of fun.
I have turned a Dell Mini 9 into a Mac OS / Ubuntu dual boot unit. It's got the 64gig SSD and 2gigs ram option. To handle the tiny screen resolution, I used a terminal command to scale all the GUI windows / elements by about 80%.. may just be the windows. I use that one for Web Surfing, AIM, MS Office/Open Office, iPhoto for mainly viewing and some color fixing, using DVD player to watch DVDs I ripped to thumb drives and they looked great as the Dell Mini 9 has a great screen and many other lightweight programs. Since I use Mac, I love the syncing ability with my mobile me as well as using time machine. You can do all this syncing and program using on Windows too.
On a side note for a fun test I did to see what the performance was if I copied my WoW folder over. It will run WoTLK with all settings on basic with some tuned up a little. I use the fully stock GUI and the only addons I used were a shaman totem addon and a threat meter and a buff bar. All super light weight. The game ran about 30fps in outdoor areas and 15fps in major cities. Yeah.. its super small resolution and low details.. but for some fun on the go.. it worked and also on Leopard that was modded to run on it. You can do this on Windows and it performs about the same. Playable for on the road fun, but I would not use it as a main gaming unit by a long shot.
Oh I forgot,.. I have NES, SNES, SEGA and many other game emulator with hundreds of rom's and game image files and a USB gamepad or 2... these lower power games ran flawlessly and made this portable office laptop a cute n fun simple game station.
If they ever get the 9400 nVidea into these.. its a fun performance boost for the OS GUI and apps, not just video/game which is not this things intent. I spent about 549 for my dell mini with 2gig and 64gig SSD and I had a non used retail box copy of leopard I got as a prize for some online contest. - inactive, on 03/27/2009, -1/+3Oh, yeah... PC Mag.
Probably the brand advertising pamphlet that looks closer to an actual tech review magazine.
Come on... you all know these guys got paid by MSI to call it "the best netbook"
If not... why are their reviews so completely different than all other PC magazines? - BenKenobi88, on 03/27/2009, -3/+4The Eee 1000H is better than any of the three there, and can be had for $300 or maybe less if you use Microsoft's Live Cashback system. The MSI Wind and Ideapad are nearly the same, but the Eee has a lot more community support for different apps and mods. And you should never get an Aspire One over an Eee, in my opinion anyway.
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1I am waiting for Nvidia to come out with their Ion GPU.
Reviews show that it has 10 times better graphics processing than regular netbooks.
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/934/1/ - Thorpe, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2Does it run Crysis?
- zedomax, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Acer Aspire One $269.99 here:
http://zedomax.com/blog/2009/03/27/dealmax-netbook ... - schnikies79, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Wow, I haven't seen anything Packard Bell since the 486 days. Didn't even know they were still in business.
- RyanOC, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Got my dell mini 9 form $220 out the door from ebay. Shipped in the sealed factory packaging. ubuntu is great on this thing!
- schnikies79, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1I can type 60wpm on my aspire one, which is the same speed as my desktop.
- dajs, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1eeek its 348 euros in germany :/ which are 463 $, thats a 100$ more in germany for the same eee pc :(
http://www.amazon.de/1000H-WSVGA-Netbook-Intel-sch ... - HonoredMule, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1For me it comes down to which one has a not-screwed-up keyboard layout (especially don't go messing with the shift and enter keys), and which one has the most maturely/robustly supported wireless chipset (and no performance issues in the wireless hardware itself). At the time of purchase, the Aspire One appeared to be the closest match in the $300 range (anything else worthwhile was punching $500), and I've mostly been satisfied (even though the atheros chipset has proven more trouble than expected, but that's mostly Ubuntu's fault).
- Skurt, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1you can use this to fix that;
http://mydellmini.com/forum/virtually-increase-you ...
You could hold down alt/option and click the green button
You can use the green button to 'maximize' the windows
You could 'buy' mondo mouse;
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20061 ...
Or free;
http://www.quicksnapper.com/jasonrobb/image/mac-os ...
but the developer should just program the windows correctly in the first place.
Besides, it's the programmer/developers fault for allowing the corner resizer to be hidden;
Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (that ALL apps are meant to follow but few manage completely) state that no apps should be able to go behind the dock. Cocoa apps get this behavior automatically for free which is why iPhoto behaves correctly. Carbon apps do not and it's up to the developer to do the right thing.
I'm sure if you Google Mac OS X Screen resize you'd find even more suggestions. - mac734, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1This is a great tip, thanks! I just bought an aspire one and am interested in putting this on it.
- Elranzer, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Packard Bell stopped business in the USA around the late 90s. They've always been in business in Europe, though.
- tatterery202, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1When I click on the Acer link, it says it's $648.
- HonoredMule, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1If I were still in the market for a netbook, I'd be happy to see this nevertheless, and to be fair, the title isn't exactly misleading or anything. As for the details, there are plenty of more thorough reviews/comparisons, and I've already read several. I don't really see a problem.
- kewl4eva, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1How many ppl actually use bicycles 2day??!!
The number has dropped constantly in all these years!!
Netbooks r goin 2 face the same fate, sooner or later!!! - themastersb, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1I just bought the 1000HE the other day. The shift key is in the right place with that. I was told to wait until they start using Nvidia Ion in them, but if I were to constantly wait for better versions to come out I'd be waiting forever.
- mpobri, on 03/28/2009, -1/+1I did, *****. Called a Macbook Air. Oh right, it's a dollar shy.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1I'm still not convinced that these are the way to go for light duty. Just like any other electronic device, these things will require more and more resources which will bloat their otherwise svelte form. The newer ones can run $400-$500 which is more than 1/2 on a new regular laptop that will last a lot longer.
- MattBD, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1I saw an HP notebook in Currys today on clearance. £220, 1GB RAM, 120GB hard drive, with Suse preinstalled. I was sorely tempted, my Eee PC 2GB Surf doesn't really have enough room for what I do and I could just give that to my sister to stop her constantly trying to cadge a laptop off me, and have the HP myself. It's been nine months since I last bought a new computer (I now have a 5 year old Dell Inspiron, a 2 year old Philips X58, the Eee and a white non-unibody MacBook) and the purchasing power goblin is screaming "Buy! Buy" at me.
- Onion575, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1*Most* netbooks? Name one that costs a thousand bucks.
