- SteelChicken, on 07/15/2008, -3/+128$1.4 billion of super high tech military hardware versus water drops on sensors FIGHT
- Alucard010, on 07/15/2008, -7/+109Ahh, so that's what $1.4 billion looks like.
- MeltingIce, on 07/15/2008, -3/+86Did anyone else find the timeline illustration strangely funny?

Beautiful, high-res pics of the USAF B-2 Sprit stealth bomber

- halligan00, on 07/15/2008, -1/+59The B-2 may have cost $1.4 (2.1?) Billion in 1995 when it was built, however there are two major faults with this price tag.
#1 A very large portion of the cost of the aircraft were developmental costs - these products were not destroyed in the crash. A better, marginal cost per plane, would be $566M per plane, as offered by Northrop Grumman in 1995.
#2 The aircraft was cutting edge technology in 1995. Not quite as much today. It's rumored that the F-22 is stealthier. Ergo, the aircraft has depreciated quite a bit, since the mid-90's. - domokunt, on 07/15/2008, -2/+47#3 Crashed airplanes aren't worth much :D
- gratulor, on 09/07/2008, -2/+42Awhile back I remember watching the video of this crash so it was quite interesting to see the final outcome up close.
- JimSwarthow, on 07/15/2008, -7/+45better call Maaco!
- ericjohnson0, on 07/15/2008, -1/+27Now that you mention it, the illusrtation reminds me of that fake Inflight Safety Card from Fight Club...
http://www.clubivy.org/img/fight-club-flight-card- ... - brainnovate, on 07/25/2008, -3/+25Wow thats a nasty situation to be in. Computers only are as good as their sensors. Glad the crew got out okay, that must have been nerve-wracking!
- maz2331, on 07/15/2008, -2/+24I'm glad the crew got out of there. I've seen crash scenes where they didn't... like a C-5 Galaxy that crashed in Germany in the early 90's. That one was really bad.
And the Flugtag '88 crash at Ramstein where a plane went straight into the crowd. That one was really, really, really bad. - hydroplane, on 07/15/2008, -2/+23WELCOME TO EARTH
- groo68, on 07/15/2008, -4/+21looks like an alien space ship.
- mlbwebdesign, on 07/15/2008, -1/+14And if that isn't impressive, take a look at the timeline. it basically lasted 1.4 minutes
- Gndoab, on 07/15/2008, -1/+14Buried - Because even if you're correct in your accusation, it will never come to light because the way people like you come off as crazy.
- schneb, on 07/15/2008, -0/+12This is one of the problems with an all-computer run aircraft. It relies totally on the accuracy of its sensors and gauges. I'm just thankful the pilots are OK.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+13u know how they said a picture is worth a thousand words?
the combination of those 4 pics are worth about 4...
runway... lift-off... eject... crash. - basichuman, on 07/15/2008, -5/+16*sniff* *sniff* goodbye sweet tax dollars, we barely knew ye...
- bombula, on 07/15/2008, -3/+14Depreciation makes little sense here. If you're depreciating the expenditure, you might as well include opportunity cost in the expense ledger.
The only relevant point in this story is: the tax payers got a shockingly paltry return on an investment of a positively staggering sum of money. - Slovenian6474, on 07/15/2008, -2/+12All accidents should never have happened. That's why they're accidental.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+11Those are some informative time line images there...
- lilvtboix, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10It's just a weather balloon.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 07/15/2008, -0/+9That would be awesome. Then we don't have to spend another $2 billion making its replacement.
- dustbin, on 07/15/2008, -1/+9I was stationed at Ramstein and at the show when the plane went into the crowd (28 Aug 1988 - my two year anniversary in the Air Force). Every time I see that crash on TV I get that sick feeling in my stomach...
- usafdave, on 07/15/2008, -2/+10Not exactly... the high extremely high expense comes from the stealth technology. Avionics and overall computer systems are *not* exactly as cutting edge as one might think.

"B-2 Stealth Bomber Gets Upgrade, Joins the '90s" - WiretapStudios, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8That was the first thing I thought when I saw the headline. I had to digg you up.
- overtoke, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8I read the description of what happened as pilot error. The media are trying to blame water, I realize, but that is not what happened.
The pilot apparently failed to turn on the heaters, which are probably there specifically to keep that water out. This is not a 'somehow water got in the sensor' situation.
I don't know what the checklist says, but I would probably choose to recalibrate after doing something like 'turning on the heaters.' - vroom101, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8Why?
- etherreal, on 07/15/2008, -1/+9Dont forget about the B-52 at Fairchild AFB.
- mr5150, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8Great pics however i never really appreciated just how big the aircraft is up until i saw the firetruck next to it. I actually thought they were somewhat smaller.
Anyway nice to see some really nice quality pics. - ericjohnson0, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7Next time you look at that timeline, hum the 'Benny Hill' theme song and tell me you didn't laugh.

- JimSwarthow, on 07/15/2008, -4/+9y'mean debunking the "9/11 lie" that it was a govt plot/cover-up (using science any 3rd grader could understand)? yeah, they sure do make fools of idiots like you.
- rrife, on 07/15/2008, -4/+9They need some of this http://www.infomercials-tv.com/blog/2007/11/fixit. ...
- schneb, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5One can only speculate how much advanced technology this puppy brought us. We rarely factor that in to our precious ledgers.
- richmomz, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5Just rub some dirt on it.
- 5plic3r, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5If the task of turning-on the heaters was so critical, the software should have taken care of it during pre-flight. Why the hell was such a menial chore left up to the pilot?
- culbeda, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5It's all ball bearings nowadays...
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5Doesn't change the fact that we paid for it with the "original mark up price." MSRP obviously didnt come into consideration on this one.
- sofunnyithurts, on 07/15/2008, -4/+8looks like its covered in bird crap
