- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9More like, nobody has the balls to try to run Vista x64 on a production system.
- toddmok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The article says the power5 has 32 chip support and the power6 has 64 chip support (you read bit instead of chip)
- dotlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i certainly don't have the balls. i mean, i do run Vx64 on my everyday working computer, but i'm a girl, so ...
- gimpbully, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7NO IT'S NOT A SHAME! i hate this comment (you're just the straw that breaks the camel's back, sorry). The amount of time it would take for the tech in the POWER6 to trickle down to the PowerPC is way too long and a fair bit of it never gets into the PowerPC. That said, the POWER line is fantastic, I work on them constantly. These ***** can do some huge IO. *cough*
- --c3--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love how they test these things for reliability "IBM runs Power6 systems at the wrong end of a proton beam.". How cool is that?
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+565nm, great, 5GHz, hurray. But where are the real numbers?
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5if Clippy was still alive he'd find a way... he'd find a way
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3phreak:
Ain't no way, man, security's too tight. The big iron?
zero cool:
Maybe. But, if I were gonna hack some heavy metal, I'd, uh, work my way back through some low security, and try the back door.
cereal killer:
Yeah but oh man, (starts rubbing nipples)
wouldn't you just love to get one of those Gibsons, baby? Ooooh! - CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@ers35: No. No it won't. Vista doesn't have the balls to run on 64 processors.
- ssam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dugg because i want one
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't cross the streams!
Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and I'm sure he'd want to tell us all about it... and he'd never go away...EVER!
- ericthegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sweet, this means the next iSeries system (AS/400) I buy is going to be a monster!
- natterca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Big Iron? BIG IRON? That, my friends, is not big iron.
*This* is big iron: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/hardware/ - uncleFester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm a little baffled by this article, considering when you look at ibm's current highest-end power5 system...
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/p/hardware/highend/595/index.html
.. they already have a 64-way box in power5. and iirc, the largest power4 box (p690) supported 32-way. i'm wondering if they have their limits for the arch a little skewed.
-r - axisds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These new boxes sound like beasts. It will be interesting to see how IBM's direction with development and implementation mount up against those of its competitors.
- uncleFester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uumm...
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/p/hardware/highend/595/index.html ...?
.. but it's all kinda meaningless anyway, as ibm is working to combine all its lines (z/p/i) into a unified architechure. i think that's part of the goal of power7: the hardware will support aix, i/os & zOS on the same box. the tech in the pSeries boxes is gaining in features inherited from the z boxes (virtualizing IO and CPU resources).
-r (spends his day working on rs6000/pSeries boxes.. but it's all good; we have both and the all have their own role to fill) - bethebryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+188mph is amazing, I love his diggs and comments, and balls... nuts, sack whatever... someone is drunk as ***** and digging, who dat!?!?!? digg me up fooooools!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kate is sooo hot...
- neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even more amazing is this claim: "IBM earlier has said that the Power6 processor will run between 4GHz and 5GHz, about twice the 2.3GHz maximum clock frequency of Power5+."
In the 17 years I've been in this industry I can't remember any time when the increment of a single general purpose CPU generation has produced a 1.7GHz --> 2.7GHz jump in clock frequency. Those numbers are staggering and frankly I smell more than a little whiff of *****!
I'll believe it when I see it. - cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But will it run Oregon Trail?
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IBM seems to be going for big ticket corporate server customers and large scale custom CPU contracts like the Nintendo Wii and the XBox 360. Apple simply wasn't a priority to them.
- wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i think you might have misread the "...Power5+ chip works in servers with as many as 32 of the dual-core processors...." part. here's a little more info on the older power5 chips, http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=12217 that might give you a better idea of what they are improving over.
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1submitter should have mentioned Kevin Rose in article title. That may have gotten it more diggs or comments.
- todd3091, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"The article says the power5 has 32 chip support and the power6 has 64 chip support (you read bit instead of chip)"
Incorrect, it is referring to processor count. POWER6 will support 64 processors. The POWER architecture has supported 64 bit for some time already. - 88mph, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wait a sec... I've got to add a comment here... Doesn't it seem that IBM is always touting a future road-map/technology? I hear the words: Promise, IBM Says, Features will employ, Scheduled to arrive, etc... I don't usually follow the processor news, but what ever happened to the promise of a 3Ghz G5??? Oh wait... Nothing... IBM really needs to deliver on this..... And they're already late...
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Shame Apple had to switch to Intel...
Someone should hack openDarwin to run on a 64 chip IBM mainframe.
The true UberMac. - zixxer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1that was a good read on the chip...but my i520 has a power5 and its 64bit....? article says its not
- ers35, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2But will it run Vista?
Sorry, just my default comment for these stories.
