Acer releases The One: Atom-based SubNotebook
hardware-revolution.com — I’ve been looking into buying a sub-notebook for about 2 months now and I ’ve seen the Eee, on which I think there’s not enough storage, the MSI Wind, which is limited to a 3-cell battery until september, at 499$. Now let's see how Acer compares, with "The One". They offer 5 different versions of it, with 4 different colors, starting at only 379$!

- orangederange, on 07/17/2008, -0/+11I was looking into the eeepc, hp, msi wind, and was leaning towards the MSI wind and was waiting for the 6 cell and the linux version to come out... but now, this one looks even more promising. It's good to have choices.
- Mathieugothax, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I was about to do the same as you, wait for the 6-cell version of the MSI Wind, until I read about this on the web. I've found that it was perfect for my needs and that it's a great offer for the price, thus why I wrote about it and did share it with all of you =)
- jamesfaction, on 07/17/2008, -0/+11the Atom powered eee 901 has 20Gb solid state drive not 12... the linux version that is. It's not that hard to put XP on it too if you really want to.
- Mathieugothax, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Thank you for pointing that out, corrected that in my post. However, they start at 549.99$ for the 4-cell and 599.99$ for 6-cell, which is way more expensive, for still, only 20gb of storage.
- jamesfaction, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4what kind of dollars is that? The Eee 901 is selling over here for... what works out to about US$450.
the Acer definitely looks like it's worth checking out, it could give the Eee a run for its money. I wonder what form-factor 120Gb drive it is? If it's 2.5" great, if it's 1.8" then the notebook will be a slow performer and personally i'd stick with a solid state drive. I have an external 320Gb USB-powered 2.5" drive anyway, you can get one of those for under US$150.- Mathieugothax, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3"Here" being where exactly? I was looking at NewEgg, in USD.
According to Ncix.com ,the SSD is 1.8", while the hard drive is 2.5". It would seem that the model housing the physical hard drive is slightly bigger. Upgrading the SSD is impossible, as it's soldered on.
Performance wise, the SSD is said to be very slow, I read about it yesterday, can't find the link this morning. The physical hard drive is 2.5" and 5400 rpm, which should give you the performance of a typical laptop hard drive. In any case, I want the storage, not the speed. If I wanted speed, I wouldn't use an Atom 1.6Ghz...
And an USB drive? That's even slower, as it's limited by the USB interface bandwidth.

- orangederange, on 07/18/2008, -0/+9One of the things about the eeepc 901, when I went to the store to see it, it seemed the keyboard got a tad bit smaller than the original. Even for my small hands testing it out at the store, it did feel a little uncomfortable. I heard that MSI Wind had a little bit bigger keyboard, and by the looks of it this Aspire the key size seems similiar... I cant wait to see one of these Aspires, and get one so I can go blogging on the road! Thanks for the post Mathieugothax!
- Mathieugothax, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3My pleasure. Expect a review/hands on of the Aspire One soon, if I can find one in store =D
- shogan191, on 07/18/2008, -0/+10Nice job on the article. Well organized and right to the point.
I've also been looking for a sub-notebook but the prices have been putting me off. This is certainly a reasonable price point. - aliweb, on 07/18/2008, -0/+10Interesting article.
Seems like the Acer has got everything in it including Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Wecam. What more could you ask? - malia94, on 07/18/2008, -0/+7I'll be interested to see this... it seems to me to be a better option than the Eee for what I'm looking for in a small laptop that isn't a desktop replacement.
- lolupissed, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6With that resolution when using windows xp does the desktop scroll?
- Mathieugothax, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Well, if I switch to 800x600, it doesn't scroll and the Acer One screen resolution is 1024x600, so you should be fine. I think it's just perfect for the web too, as most websites are optimized for 1024 pixels wide resolutions.
- MrSketch, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Just FYI, but since I didn't see a link in the post, there is some more information on the Acer website about this:

(flash warning) - blackdude, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2"For the last two months, I’ve been sick and tired! My current laptop, an Aspire 5610, is too powerful, too heavy (About 7 pounds) and has a too short battery lifespan (2 hours fully charged, with power-saving features on, although the battery has some wear.)...(and I) listen to music/Dvds. When I go out for a whole day, it’s get uncomfortable to carry it due to its weight and I can’t use it much due to its short battery life."
lmaorofl * ^ - jamesfaction, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1The read speed of SSDs is very quick which is great for booting and program load times. It's the write speed which is not so hot at the moment.
Great that the HDD version is 2.5" tho, it'll be nice and quick.
I get very quick transfer speeds with my 2.5" external USB drive. USB 2.0 is 480Mbps - quicker than the HDD can handle!
True I was looking at prices for the 900 not the 901! Asus better drop prices quick!
