- SpruceCaboose, on 10/14/2009, -3/+34Well, at least PC repair technicians will be needed still...
- Mockylock, on 10/15/2009, -0/+23I support over 600 dell computers in my company (new and old), and still only have failures on hardware once every other month. Most of them are older hard drives and PSU's. I also service pc's for extra cash on the side.
E-machines, Acer and HP are the top computers I'm given to work on because of hardware failure. I'm not sure if this is because of warranty work or not, but given I don't have many service calls to dell every month, I'd say they're reliable.
My guess is they're selling more because they're the cheapest option at Best Buy and Walmart. - seltaeb4, on 10/15/2009, -4/+21There is an eternal race to the bottom in PC quality and price.
Buying quality always pays, just like your grandparents taught you. - designfans, on 10/14/2009, -3/+15That will change once people find out about these new designer covers!

Or maybe not since Acer's are probably selling because they're cheaper. - Taiyoryu, on 10/15/2009, -0/+8That's Asus not Acer
- inactive, on 10/15/2009, -0/+8My last Dell lasted 7 1/2 years. While it was certainly running slow at the end, it had nothng to do with the quality of the computer. And it still had all original components in it (with upgrades in RAM only) and nothing failed at all. The only problem I ever had was when I had the biggest static electricity shock ever just as I went to turn on my speaker. It happened on day 363 of my 1 year warranty. When I called on day 364, they sent me a new set no questions asked. I am still using those speakers to this day.
- mikedoth, on 10/15/2009, -0/+7Never been a big Acer fan, mostly home build (ASUS) or go with Dells... My buddy bought a Acer Netbook and it's actually pretty good. Think i'll hold off an buy a Dell version though, that is unless there's a huge difference in cost.
- olafcore, on 10/15/2009, -1/+8I <3 my Acer Aspire One.
Pretty awesome that it's compatible with Haiku, Windows 7, and Ubuntu Linux out-of-the-box. I'd highly recommend one of these netbooks if you love tinkering around with multiple operating systems. I know I do. :) - riverstyx, on 10/15/2009, -11/+15Love my Acer computer, couldn't imagine life without it. Top quality, great price, and very dependable =)
- inactive, on 10/15/2009, -3/+7How DARE you be pleased with your Acer computer! Buried!
- awm80, on 10/15/2009, -0/+4I've canceled a computer & plasma tv order from Dell in the last year because of 'backordering' issues. Both items I ordered took over a month and still hadn't shipped and they kept moving up my dates on shipment. Called and complained, no one could fix it. I built my own computer from Newegg & ordered my TV from newegg. Very satisfied. I will never buy dell again.
- antdude, on 10/15/2009, -0/+4$$$ :D
- npdcrazypyro, on 10/15/2009, -0/+4I have a Dell computer that is 6 years old (the Dimension 4200) and it still runs (it runs pretty slow, but it runs). It undergoes heavy use to this day, and not one component has failed in that computer. In fact the only hard drive that failed was an external WD hard drive connected to that Dell, but even the original HDD inside the dell is working.
- inactive, on 10/15/2009, -0/+4I have both and Acer (HTPC) and a Dell (Quad-core), and they both work fine. I still prefer the Dell though, Acer just seems a little chintzy to me : \
- Texa, on 10/15/2009, -0/+3Dell used to design computers in Austin, TX. Now they moved all of that to Taiwan. It's not too shocking that a Taiwanese company is outselling them. I always knew this would happen. People told me that's cause engineering is easy, the fun part, the business side of things will stay here. I don't think so. If you can move engineering overseas, you can move the business side of things as well.
Now, they're in the process of moving server design to Taiwan also. I predict that they're going to beat by some random asian company in that area as well...very shortly. - inactive, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2Acer my just be cheaper and people but netbooks butI love Dells. I build my own desktops but their laptops are first rate. I've had every brand and so have my friends and from experience they are the most stable and reliable. I had my 600m for 4 years and only got a new one because it was too slow to play full screen HD flash. Nothing ever broke on it except the battery going dead (duh). My new one is a studio xps 13 and I love it as well. Real sleak design with lots of battery. After these two laptops and seeing everyone elses I would never buy anything else. I may have just had good experiences though.
- kingnova, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2Clearly there is only one answer for Dell: Close more plants and find other states that will fall for the tax breaks=jobs BS.
- Mockylock, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2I moved to the 6400's this year and they seem alright. The speakers have a bit to be desired, but the rest is pretty nice as well as easily accessible for repairs if needed.
- SpruceCaboose, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2Yes, yes they are.
- frankawesome, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1maybe if dell would ship things when they first say they're suppose to.
- explodingzebras, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1I prefer home-builds for desktops, and HP for laptops. Some Acers are ok but they shipped some SFF machines with Vista with only 1GB of RAM, and part of that shared with the onboard Intel 'extreme' graphics.
- LittleALjr, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Dear Dell.... Proprietary is so Packard Bell.
- BigVi, on 10/15/2009, -1/+2That used to be Dells angle too.
- seltaeb4, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1I notice your Dells are about the same age. They've changed a lot for the worse since then, as the bottom's dropped out of the hardware market.
IBM even gave up making PCs years ago. It became so low-margin it just wasn't worth it anymore. - andrejhoward, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Me too man, I'm the windows sys admin .. we have 1300 dells here. From the D600 all the way to the E6400 and hardware failures are few and far between ... there buisness series has superb reliability.
But what you have to remember is the dells we deal with are not the dells that are at Best Buy or wal mart ... we have a different series ... - o0adam0o, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1If DELL was sold in everywhere in full retail stores... it be a different story.
- qwertydvorak, on 10/15/2009, -1/+2mostly because acers are *****.
- inactive, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1What the ***** was my first sentence? Wow.
- jimragan, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Dell seems to have dropped the ball on the Latitude D620s and 630s though. I've had quite a few needing motherboard replacement due to one thing or another failing on the board. D600s and 610s were workhorses. Still running quite a few of those in the company. Went to the Latitude E5400s, I'll see if they are back up to the standards I expect from Dell.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1Acer ftw!
http://www.journaldumac.com/images/-2008/02/acer.j ... - Mockylock, on 10/15/2009, -1/+1Dell's been selling skins for years.
- scruffybr, on 10/15/2009, -0/+0ACER make great computers my laptop is so awesome and no problems
- TheUngod, on 10/15/2009, -1/+1I agree with great price and dependable, but they are by no means top quality. I have an Acer laptop and love it, but not for its quality. It was cheap and does what it was designed to do without breaking, which is more than I can say for my old Toshiba.
- coffeevanilla, on 10/15/2009, -1/+0Glad to see this 2 companies squabbling for the runner up. Way to go HP! But regardless of the brand, they all have one thing in common: they are all made in China!
HP all the way! - inactive, on 10/15/2009, -3/+1Acer notebooks are garbage. The keys fade after a year, the paint fades where your palms rest, and they feel flimsy. They are not well constructed. I would rather have a Dell than an Acer. Sadly, ThinkPads are starting to look cheap now that Lenovo manufactures them. The only decent notebook that I have used is a HP.
- linagee, on 10/15/2009, -3/+1Who is Acer?
- NGYoshi, on 10/15/2009, -3/+1Buried for being an .
- tmaxxpunisher, on 10/15/2009, -6/+1If it wasn't for the netbooks they are almost giving away I don't think they would be beating dell.
$261 netbook running linux
