- meanteen, on 10/11/2007, -7/+44I would have given up after # 3 for real man... 11 thats crazy.
- godzillaWax, on 10/11/2007, -4/+36Incidentally, how ghetto is it that 1up was able to call customer service and get all his information?
- i64X, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32I bought a 360 in December of 2006 and it just bricked last month the day I got Forza 2 home. It was fine up until then - we played DVDs in it all the time along with games. I was pretty skeptical about this whole red light thing until mine bricked. I called them and they sent me a box to ship it back in. I shipped it back and I'm still waiting for them to send me a fixed one. From what I've been reading you get a refurb unit back, not your own. I put a little mark on mine to test if that was true or not, so we'll see what happens.
Since mine's bricked itself I've had one friend whose brother's unit bricked, and my boss' son's unit has bricked as well. That means everyone I know with a 360 has had a unit go bad. If it bricks again I'm just going to say screw it... which sucks because I enjoy the 360 more than either of the other two "next gen" consoles.
As G W Bush said... 'Fool me once... shame on... shame on you. Fool me twice... can't get fooled again.' - sekou, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30I'm on 360 number six. Nowhere near as bad as poor Justin, but still inexcusable. As someone who's been replacing his console on an average of every 4 months, I'm glad stories like this are finally becoming more and more commonplace. It's become an issue Microsoft won't be able to ignore for much longer. It's clear the reason they don't address it: Then they'd have to do something about.
- godzillaWax, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33My first xbox broke last night after 5 months. 5 months and I consider myself lucky. Every single one of my friends has gotten the red ring of death, and yet Microsoft continues to pretend there's no problem.
That there hasn't been a class action lawsuit yet is astounding to me. - anonatron, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30I am not sure if this guy is unlucky or if I am just lucky. I have had my 360 for quite some time now and have had no issues with it at all. Well, here's hoping I don't find a red ring tonight when I get home!
- readme, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19With the 360 it's not *if* it will break, it's *when* it will break. They all do eventually.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14That, or they didnt want to wait around for another failure to get a picture?
- webpoet73, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18I know MS's customer service is bad... it took them just about a month to get my Xbox360 back to me... it took 17 days to get me a box to send it back in. 5 phone calls resulted in getting Kameo for free and a month of XboxLive (which they owed me anyway since I couldn't use the service for a month while the console was broke). Their customer service needs a shake-up.
Oh, and 11 broken consoles... that's absurd. Looks like the design and/or manufacturing needs to be investigated.... Its a shame, too, because the machine is fantastic.... when it works... - schmik07, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Looks like a stock photo to me...
- Markpdotcom, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Depends if you have chilli for lunch or not!
Sorry, red ring joke... I'll get my coat... :) - Karyyk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16Does the term 'class action lawsuit' mean anything to you? With the failure rate as high as it apparently is (mine just red-ringed on me a couple of months ago), it should to Microsoft.
- numba1xclusive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13He did it because the gamer forums/fanboys didn't believe the many problems the guy was having but instead called him a fake.
Seriously though, i would've called ***** after the 4th Xbox then expected a full refund. This is ridiculous. - jonnyeh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I was 'lucky' for 3 months with my launch system, then I was 'lucky' for just over a year for my 2nd system, just enough time for it to not be covered under warranty.
- inajeep, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12While you'll have problems like this on the long end. It's inexcusable. I'd like to see a picture of where he's placing his 360 too. It may be sucking heat from the other devices and failing. Plus we all know the refurbs aren't repaired correctly everytime too.
I got a new swap out of EB due to the warranty 4 months after the launch unit had 2 red ring incidents. The one I got hasn't had a problem since. Everytime this subject comes up I'll put in my unofficial survey. Out of the 200 friends in a Xbox gaming group I belong to, we had a failure rate of about %26-%28. Not good numbers. More in line w/ the latest unofficial survey. The longer MS keeps up this denial attitude the longer they will be perceived as the inferior hardware. - ardnut, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11At least in the UK if you buy your console from a high street retailer, such as Game, you can just go in with the receipt and get a replacement 360 straight away.
- spearce, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12my 360 just broke a few days ago with the "disc read error"...no red circles but lots of wierd noises from the DVD rom.
that's what i get for pushing the eject button while a game was playing. that's never borken stuff before though CD, DVD, or game console. - Shawn4168, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9The xbox 360 has been out for less than 2 years.
- reed311, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10It's a combination of both, I'd say. The system will break on you, its only a matter of time, I don't care how well you keep it - its going to brick.
- StandardsDT, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I'm on my 3rd right now. I just got the console back. I checked the MFG date and it says 2005. Just what I need a refurbished launch console. I can see this thing dieing on me in a few months.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Every console I've ever owned over the past 20+ years.
http://blog.demodulated.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/entcentre.jpg (the GC is now a Wii) - Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I don't think it's an isolated problem. While I have yet to receive the red ring, I play my 360 far less than most owners, and it did eat my PGR3 disc. This article should just read, "Justin = Dumb for standing behind a manufacturer who can't get their ***** together." I mean, if my Infiniti broke down 11 times in a year, I think I might choose another manufacturer, and tell everyone that I know never to buy from Nissan.
- wheezy360, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I find it funny to say that I've thankfully only had one replacement. I'm *thankful* that I've only had *one defect* so far. That's not something you would think one should be thankful for. But, apparently it really is. When I went to Blockbuster to rent a game after getting my refurb 360 sent back to me, the clerk looked at my rental history and commented that I hadn't been in in a while. I told him it was because my 360 was out of commission and I had just got it back. Turns out he was a gamer too so he asked about what sort of problems I had, and mentioned that he was on his *EIGHTH* console. What's even worse than hearing that is that I wasn't surprised.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Yea I am on my 4th 360, the third time it went out it was out of warranty, but then like a month later they extended the warranties to a year so I got it fixed then, otherwise it would have been $140 bucks, also they said if I had a complaint to post it to the forums on the xbox website, man I got flamed for days after doing that, being accused of lying and everything else, it was ridiculous. I got a wii also, it broke after a couple weeks, Nintendo sent an advance replacement, they shipped me a new one, got it like 3 days later and I put my old one back in their box and shipped it back, now thats service.
- tatical, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I used to think just like you, mostly because my 360 'was' just fine. My 360 is on my dresser and my PS3 is the closest thing next to it at 10 inches away.
I haven't gotten any reg rings YET, but i have gotten various graphical errors (scrambled video, funky colors, & complete loss of video.
The rings are coming, I just don't know when. - psychotoe, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I'm amazed how people can say this is bad luck, Having to deal with MS that much is not bad luck it's a crappy product. I have had my problems with my 360 and I still do with random freezing but the real problem here is that I really like the system! It's crazy it's like an abusive relation ship that I don't want to get out of. I love the console but Microsoft must step up and fix this problem!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+18I'm glad my $$ went to Nintendo and not Microsoft.
- reyalp, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9a friend of mine is on xbox 360 number 9. in a month or so when number 9 breaks, he's just going to buy a PS3 or a Wii.
his quickest fail: one lasted a paltry 4 days. - blackgt93, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Mine kicked the bucket about two weeks ago and my replacement/repaired console is arriving Friday. I too know no one who hasn't had their 360 shoot craps. MS needs to recognize this as a problem and something should be done.
- TehSwat, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14Yeah, i'm thinking the dumbass who had "11 broken xboxs" just screwed up plugging in the the video cables 12 times.
- theasp18, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I had my launch console in a nice little rack with plenty of air flow and no bunched cables. She died 5/28/07. RIP. My new one arrived 6/20/07. Even if the consumers are a little hard on it they still shouldn't be breaking at the rate they are. It's a consumer product and they need to hold up in certain circumstances. Kids don't exactly take care of their crap like adults do. I remember the beatings my Nintendos use to take when I was younger. Never did I have a problem with them - granted - they are not the same internally but you get the point.
- mfigueredo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I'm on my third....
- dvddesign, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8You obviously don't have an xbox 360.
I own two and they've both bricked on me. I've replaced both. But I don't bear any ill will on them because the games are fun, the achievements are fun, the XBL is stellar.
It's entirely conceivable for 11 units to break on someone. Is it common, probably not, but there's always someone who's going to end up in a situation like this. It's really up to their patience level at that point of when they decide to cut and run on a company. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10I love my 360, but I'm on my third...
Thanks Microsoft. - ronaldinho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I want to see how one of Justin's 360 exploded
And judging from the comments made here, it seems we can compare 360 to a slutty girlfriend who sooner or later will disappoint you and ***** with other guys, but you can't lay her off because she's got the best body ever AND she's good in bed - ibeetle, on 10/11/2007, -31/+352 broken game systems... manufacturing defects.
11 broken game systems... user abuse.
It is that simple.
Nobody replaces 11 defective anythings, and still supports that company. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4or because he cant remeber because he hasnt played them all because he never got his 360 woking. :p
- ronaldinho, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5uh, Justin did, he even hired a contractor to check the wiring. But damn, he really IS a hardcore gamer
- reyalp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4most UPS units don't filter the power coming out of the outlets. they aren't line-interactive, as that makes unit costs significantly higher.
if you read the article you would also see that he had a contractor come to his house and test the line quality of his house and it was perfect.
i question the explode comment too, but the power bricks have been known to go kaboom on some faulty units. - SmokeMeAKipper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Here's hoping for a fix before I buy one for my son to play Halo3 in September.
- blahtastic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Fifth...sigh...4th just broke yesterday, waiting for the "1337" service agent (agent without a foreign accent, who can give away free goodies) to call me back...
- dvddesign, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You can do that here in the states too in most cases. The issue is that once you hit a certain time frame, the stores won't take the product back anymore.
- theasp18, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Mine froze a couple times before it ultimately broke. When I was chit chatting about it on the Xbox forums you wouldn't believe the flame replies that I got from the fan boys saying it was my fault that I didn't call MS CSR every time it froze. (I had to replace mine 5 months out of warranty). Anyway, word of advice, call CSR and report every freeze and keep a log of it. So if it breaks out of warranty then maybe you have an argument for not getting charged the ridiculous amount of $140.
- therealrico, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Well to microsofts credit they are good about replacing them. If they didn't replace them then you can bet a class action lawsuit would be filed.
- doublebummer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've treated my consoles with kid gloves and I've already lost 2. 11 failures with normal use doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility.
- yzerman, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10I've had my xbox360 well over a year now and I have to say I haven't had a single issue with it.
Its just so strange that these issues keep popping up. I can see it easily being a overheating issue, I'm not sure how many of you who have boxes that died didn't block air ventilation, cleaned up the dust or put it in a cabinet with poor air flow to cause it to over heat.
Mine sits on a wood table under my plasma tv with it open to the room air, no cabling or carpet on or behind it, dusted off every month. The only thing sitting on it is the HDDVD drive.
For you guys having issues how much room off the floor and space did you make for it for air flow? Did you clean off dust bunnies and make sure the cables weren't clumped in the back ventilation of it?
Just some thoughts. - dotMH, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They needed to wait for what? 10 minutes? :D
- byronm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I've had a luanch Xbox 360 and its been on probably 6-10 hours a day and not a problem.. a few hours of gaming and LOTS of media center front end.
Heat is the biggest issue, my 360 sites on top of my media center and is not surrounded by anything generating heat either.
But man, 11? i'd given up or looked at what could be causing that in house. - theasp18, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It'll break. My launch console just did.
- LeeVal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My Xbox 360 Drive is starting to make strange noises aswell. as if its having problems reading the disc but its not
