- awolfe91, on 01/07/2009, -9/+49I like the 17" MBP. I'm cool with the enclosed battery when it means 3 extra hours of battery life.
If you don't like it, that's fine! We all have our preferences when it comes to tech. Everything won't please everybody, there are other options. - I1969, on 01/07/2009, -1/+23It's a battery with a keyboard and screen on top!
- MakinBacon, on 01/08/2009, -3/+23The MacBook is a 17" laptop that houses an 8hr battery in an enclosure that's just 0.98" high.
A) The HP 6930P is a 14.1" screen laptop and has a height of 1.23". Comes with a 6-cell (55 WHr) battery out of the box that "dies out after about 3.5 hours of moderate usage." according to http://www.digitgeek.com/hp-elitebook-6930p-review ... . Now I'm not sure what exactly you have to do to get the 24 hours you speak of... perhaps a one inch battery slice that fits over the entire base?
B) The Dell E6400 is also a 14.1" screen laptop with a height of 1.2" and its 6-cell standard battery gives you about 3.2 hours of usage. You can only get the 19 hours by purchasing optional 9-cell battery and optional 84Whr battery slice that adds another 1/2" to the laptop height. See here: "Dell has promised up to 19 hours of battery life if you combine a 9-cell battery with the optional 12-cell "battery slice"--essentially a giant battery that fits over the entire bottom of the system. We tested the 9-cell battery alone, and were very impressed with the 4 hours and 27 minutes we got" : http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-latitude-e640 ...
So please... find me a 17" laptop that comes with an 8hr battery out-of-the-box... heck you'd be hard pressed to find more than one or two 14" laptops that come with that!! - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+18Why not link to the ACTUAL video that the article is talking about instead? :S
http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/17inch-battery/wat ... - serif69, on 01/08/2009, -2/+15I think this is a record for the fastest someone has posted a logical, moderate comment on digg.
- XeneticXero, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9There's still the 15.4 inch MBP with replaceable batteries, Along with 9000+ other non apple-laptops.
Isn't it nice to have alternatives? - Scott2, on 01/07/2009, -2/+9I'm glad they're bucking tradition and the tech is cool, but there are days when I need two batteries to get through a really long day . . .
- ut2k4king, on 01/08/2009, -4/+11Pardon the pun, but you're not exactly comparing apples to apples. The 6930p has a 14.1" screen with integrated graphics while the new MacBook Pro has a 17" screen with dedicated graphics.
- ptFoe, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7for $3000 (AU) you would hope so.
- Commodus, on 01/07/2009, -3/+8Actually, they explain in detail why they had to remove the easy access: it's not just the screws. You need a whole support structure to let people access the battery externally.
- GothAlice, on 01/08/2009, -3/+8I can build a computer with a three week battery life! Take a Asus Eee and about a dozen car batteriesā¦
- awolfe91, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Oh great, some kind of weird freak who talks to himself
- GothAlice, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7PLUG IT IN. If you can mow through 8 hours of battery life (albiet doing nothing with it to make it last that long) you can afford a charging adapter for whatever the hell keeps you away from AC. Car. Airplane. Etc. Just plug the damn thing in. It's like the "oh noes, I only get 24 hours of talk time on my headset battery!" people. -_-;
- defectDS, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6Inside the Macbook Pro: http://www.timshundo.com/dpud/uploads/Screenshot60 ...
The battery has a little pull-out flap (the grey thing on the battery), meaning that the "program" involves an Apple guy taking out the ten screws and swapping it of with new one instantly during an anyday visit to the Apple Store. If you can't let go of your laptop for a few days without falling into a deep depression, you'll probably be able to just go on to ifixit.com, order the battery yourself and do it on your own. If you're tech savvy enough to need your computer every waking minute of the day, I'm sure you realize you can get the battery on your own, in addition to not being afraid of removing 10 tiny screws.
The hard drive seems the same way as well. So you can't remove an aluminum plate and access your hard drive in 5 seconds like on a Macbook or Macbook Pro 15", big deal. Do you need to replace it or check to ensure it's existence so much that you need to do so more than once in the computer's lifetime? - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+6you just got owned by makin bacon
- Auzy, on 01/08/2009, -8/+11And what happens when there is another battery recall and you need to leave your entire computer in with service? And yes, its a possibility even with lithium-polymer as lithium can cause problems too..
Or when the battery eventually starts wearing out (Apple's claim of 5 years will most likely be incorrect). Apple does this so that instead of getting a cheaper, better 3rd party battery eventually, they can spend time convincing you to buy a new computer. You'll likely to be stuck with Apple batteries, even if they are inferior to other ones. Do you really enjoy leaving your laptop with Apple service that much?
And once again, looks like you have to pull the whole thing apart to replace the harddisk (I might be wrong). As apple doesn't drop the cost of components, what will likely happen again is that if you order it in 3 months time, you'll be paying 900USD for the 256GB SSD hdd, when everyone else is selling them at 500USD.
The new Macbook Pro really is nothing special I think.. But each to their own - Drax0n, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4They were able to put a 30% (size) battery without making the laptop bigger because they got rid of all the space required to make it swappable. The technology you speak of ads about 10% and 3x more charges.
Which maing a non swappable battery more palatable. - GothAlice, on 01/08/2009, -2/+5Yeah. I'll be in line after 10.6 and a larger Mini Display Port LED monitor become available⦠and after I win the lottery. It'll happen, I swear!
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4I'm trying to think of a job that requires a laptop, AND puts me out of range of any kind of charging method for more than eight hours. I was going to go with Web Designer/Lumberjack, but I'm almost certain that log-skidders have a 12v power jack in the cab.
- cveltma, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3I think the key word in this article (and any talking about it) is CLAIMS you all seem to be talking like these numbers are set in stone. I don't play the claim game.
- FireSlash, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2"In reality, a non-replaceable battery may be acceptable for many people"
From my point of view, I honestly don't like modular batteries. In the off event I drop my laptop, there's a good chance the modular battery will pop out and cause the laptop to power off (Consider the mass of the battery against that of the laptop against the strength and thickness of your average laptop battery clip)... goodbye work.
Obviously dropping a notebook is bad, but losing your work on top of it just adds insult to injury.
If you NEED a modular battery, that's fine. Nobody here is going to bite your head off for buying a different brand of laptop with a modular battery. - GothAlice, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Igloo enthusiast.
- Victorface, on 01/08/2009, -3/+4My 2.5 years old MacBook battery is completely dead, but it was great while it was still going.
- inactive, on 01/21/2009, -0/+1thank you for this article. if you need discount notebook battery, you can go there.

many kinds of batteries for your laptop with cheap price and high quality! - sinembarg0, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Too bad they've been using Li-Pos for a while now. My 2007 Santa Rosa MBP has a LiPo, but it's removable.
- magus_melchior, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1There are products that charge iPods from battery packs or even solar collectors. If you're in a remote spot that can't offer electrical power in the more traditional sense, I'm sure that someone will come up with an external battery that you can charge up at home in advance, and use that to charge your enclosed battery.
Or, rig up a solar charger to the 12V auto adapter. There are kits out there. - luftegrofnetfo, on 01/07/2009, -2/+3I believe the battery is supposed to last 5 years because of their new technology.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -3/+4I'm still waiting for the Hummingbird battery for my Wheel.
- AngelBunny, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1it isn't cheap and i don't have first hand experience with their products but this might help: http://store.fastmac.com/product_info.php?products ...
- Ratteler, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2Sounds like a great opportunity for Axitron to make a ModBook Pro. I would pay the extra for a nice 17" Wacom screen and a battery I can change. I've been waiting for them to get on the ball and upgrade their line anyway.
- AngelBunny, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1i don't think it voids warranty but don't quote me on that. i know changing the memory, hard drive, and cd drive doesn't void warranty and the procedure is the same.
- AngelBunny, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1lilrabbitfoofoo i've delt with multiple macbook pros before from multiple generations and every single one i have ever seen HAS ran on the battery time advertised when new. after 1 to 2 years of use the batteries tend to run about 30 min to 1 hour less than advertised use. this means that surfing the web and checking email and what not on the 17in macbook pro once it is about 2 years old should get around 7 hours of battery life. nothing is perfect but you shouldn't spout random crap without being able to back it up.
- AngelBunny, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1in rare situations like long trips i can understand the reasoning for wanting more than one battery for a laptop and that issue is a bit pressing when it comes to their newer laptops but when they say the battery isn't replaceable they mean with the click of a button. it is as replaceable as a hard drive, so if the battery fails it is still an easy fix so it isn't that big of a deal. however, i can understand for the select few who like having more than one battery present.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1This "article" is just a puff piece reiterating everything the press release says with no added information or critical examination. Therefore, dugg down for NOT having any "closer look" as promised.
- timothiuz, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3Hey, me too!
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 01/08/2009, -1/+1IF, and only if, the new Apple actually HAS 8 hours of run life. Given the history of Apple hype vs. reality, the smart money says "stay cynical".
- Zaeboes, on 01/08/2009, -1/+1There is nothing about this technology that would prevent the cells from being made swappable. Just like every laptop battery design, they stick us with the cells they want us to use. I could easily get 8 hours out of my gateway if i replaced the 6 li-ion cells at 800 mAh each with 2200 mAh cells.
- jimmi84, on 01/23/2009, -0/+0hey nice article on laptop batteries, very informative. I just bought a new battery for my laptop, works good and have a good quality.... just a look......
http://www.pdaaccessories.com/searchCategory.asp?c ... - AgentBers, on 01/08/2009, -6/+6And will the do-it-yourself battery replacements void my warranty?
And what about the fact that their current battery replacement program involves sending you a different iPod, sans data?
Sounds like most of their additional time comes from the fact they use Li-Poly, not the fact that it doesn't need "all that wasted space" for attaching the battery.
Seriously, Jobs and company are acting like George Lucas. "I'm going to take this creation that you guys all love...and do baffling ***** to it." - awolfe91, on 01/08/2009, -1/+1I see your point and your clearly fatuous comment has swayed my opinions on Digg. I agree Digg must "suck".
/s - applepart, on 03/13/2009, -0/+0I have heard battery can last 12 hs,when we travell with notebook for 2 days ,8 hs life seems meaningless.
http://applebatterypart.blogspot.com/ - nmanguy, on 01/08/2009, -12/+118 hours is NOT the leading time. HP has 24 hours on their 6930P, Dell has 19 on their E6400.
- weister42, on 01/08/2009, -4/+2Well once they start making those keyboardless ones the battery will last even longer!
