- Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31I wouldn't really want speakers on my monitor.... Other than that, i like the integrated webcam.
- G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Why is this not a widescreen monitor? What serious gamer would not love to have a widescreen monitor versus a regular 4:3?
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Ya. I'm willing to bet that any dedicated PC gamer is going to have speakers, already.
- hookid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9heres the engadget link
http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/12/asus-rocks-out-with-19-inch-pg191-gaming-monitor/ - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Apple is sleek, Viewsonic is nice, Dell is OK but damn functional. This monitor is a mess.
- Ghiblian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm pretty sure most LAN parties have rules about using headphones. It seems that nowadays, whenever they wanna cram a ton of features into one thing, they label it as "gaming... even when half the features are not used by gamers.
- dreaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Exactly. That's why I got myself a 20" widescreen dell monitor. You'd think that after paying thousands of dollars for a high-end PC a good widescreen display would be essential.
- Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They can be pretty useful at LANs for showing random videos/annoying people. :)
- cmatthias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And I've seen more setups than I can count where those ridiculous 5.1 speaker systems are placed entirely on the desk in front of the user. Nice use of 5.1!
A nice 2.1 speaker setup is really all you need, unless you really have the desire to game in the middle of a large room with the speakers mounted properly around you. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yep. Any 2ms LCD (at this time) will have reduced color rendition. Skip.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What serious gamer would not love to have a resolution of 1600x1080 or 1600x1200?
- jimfinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5[sarcasm]
this will work great with my soundblaster 16
[/sarcasm] - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That is one weird looking monitor.
- rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Just a little maths to back up my comment.
1280/1024 = 1.25 = 5/4 or 5:4 resolution.
1280/960 = 1.33... = 4/3 or 4:3 resolution.
1280x1024 is not a 4:3 resolution, its just strange. - lorensingley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That made me laugh out loud. Yeah, let's but a "bass system" on a monitor... even if the supposed "sub" woofer worked it would shake the monitor which would case your picture to distort and possibly physically damage internal components. Plus, like you guys above have said, any real gamer would prefer headphones or REAL speakers.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Let me guess, only a 6-bit panel?
- ryke12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree with Engadget on this monitor. Nice idea, but let's be completely honest.
If you're at the point where you care that your monitor has a 2ms response time (very sexy btw), then chances are you already have at least a 2.1 sound system, and have/don't need a webcam.
And the subwoofer just makes it bigger and ugly imho. - rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7What serious gamer would consider 1280x1024 a 4:3 resolution? Its not!
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This looks like it would have been really awesome if it were released in 2001 or something. But not today.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@ed
worse? or lighter and easier to carry around? - nerditup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2how do I install iLife '06 on it?
- Orbatos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This doesn't really seem like something designed for "gamers", casual web surfurs maybe? Or possibly college dorm rooms where extra speakers take up space.
- ecroF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42.1 speakers??? I'm sure gamers with their creative X-fi cards will be thrilled
- samnmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second that. I got a laptop from ASUS with a stuck pixel, and their support was totally unreasonable about fixing it, among it's many other issues. There is no reason to pay a premium for ASUS hardware when you get nothing for it in return.
- prosperolt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4any good gaming monitor is going to be 6-bit, there's less ghosting and lower response times, equaling faster display of images... MOST gaming LCD's are 6-bit because of this. moreover the newer 6-bit panels have better viewing angles and improved contrast over the early generation 6-bits... 8-bit panels are better at color reproduction and typically are better all around LCD's, they just aren't best for gaming. show me an 8-bit LCD w/ 2ms response times and i'll eat my words.
- Chronic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wouldn't the sub woofer on the back shake the hell out of the moniter while your playing a game? And also, instead of having speakers on a moniter (which almost everyone has better speakers than those) why dont they add a mic, i would like a moniter that had a built in mic so i didnt have to carry mine around to lans...
- colemanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad ASUS's horrendous website and support have pushed me to never buy a damn thing from them again... (yes, even monitors).
- ikak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Do not think that they thought of that though? Considering they specialize in this field and know what they are doing and what they want. If they aren't completely clueless I'm pretty sure that they would have tested and created some sort of technology to reduce or remove anything that may cause damage.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The base is crazy looking, but I like the actual monitor. And if it looks as good as it sounds, I can live with the part I won't see much.
- doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And yet it still doesn't hold a candle to my old $50 21" CRT, in terms of screen size, resolution, and color quality. Not to mention with all the money that costs I'd be able to buy standalone - and better - versions of the same things. Besides, I can understand a microphone, but what gamer wants a webcam? Are there even games that support it?
- Zoglog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1laagg
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The last time I moved my monitor was to move house. At most, I'd move it once per year when moving between dorms/housing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't find a price for the PG191 but personally my next monitor purchase will be a widescreen (19" or 20.1", 1440x900 or 1680x1050). The sound system is pointless and just adds to the cost, what kind of gamer uses the speakers on his monitor? Sweet, 2.1! The inputs are nice, but once again the webcam is just a frivelous add-on that is unnecessary. The 2ms response is great, but I play games all the time on a 2-3 year old 19" LCD that probably has 8ms (I don't know the specs offhand) and don't have any ghosting. This monitor, to me, just has too much flash added to it. A plain monitor with the ports and 2ms response time would be great, but they through a bunch of crap on it and probably jacked the price because of it.
- DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4how often do you really carry around your monitor except when going to LAN parties?
- kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like Asus components... very reliable.
But I hate their consumer products... the design of their PC cases, laptops, and now a monitor... it seriously looks like it was designed by a Taiwanese engineer. All function and features, with design as an afterthought. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Man thats got to be one of the ugliest LCD's I've ever seen....I like some of the stuff they've put in there, but that design is horrible.
- kensavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HOW MUCH?
- Zoglog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Typical Asus "Xtreme" Marketed crap. Asus has the worst marketing team ever, with stupid flash ads like "Your modern sword" and talking about notebooks?! I mean wtf............
but yeah, piece of crap monitor.... it's not even widescreen or high res. And knowing these types of products, severely overpriced. 2ms is probably grey 2 grey and hell.... 8ms response time is just fine. Save your money and buy yourself one of these bad boys for 1500
http://zoglog.clearlyseen.net/photos/westinghouse/xbox360graw1.jpg - samnmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A monitor no longer has to be 6-bit to be fast enough for games. I'm using a Dell 2407, which is an 8-bit S-PVA monitor, and there is no noticable LCD ghosting due to response time nor input lag. Some older PVA monitors are 6-bit, but using overdrive response time issues can be reduced. I also understand newer IPS monitors are also pretty good for games.
The older TN monitors, while they have reduced response time considerably, have poor color reproduction and horrible view angles. I doubt they are using one, but you never know. Wait till this monitor is released so we can find out exactly what kind of panel is inside.
Also, I'm quite conserned about dead/stuck/defective pixels. Asus support, in a word, sucks. I had a laptop with a stuck pixel, and asus was totally unreasonable about fixing it. There were many other issues with it, such as a ***** dvd burner with poor firmware, that neither ***** nor asus were willing to update, even though other notebook manufacturers had.
I'd personally avoid ASUS for monitors of any kind, whether they be on laptops or otherwise. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has to be. 8-bit panels haven't gotten anywhere near 2ms response time. That said, I'm typing this on a 6-bit Samsung 204b (20.1" w/ 5ms response time) and it has a very good viewing angle and color reproduction in addition to its gaming prowess. These panels are great for people like me who have to move their system around a lot and play games, though I'd rather just have a plain monitor with a USB hub. I already have speakers far superior to the ones on that Asus as well as a headset (...and a webcam).
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1phh 1280x1024
i like my 1920x1200
dell 24inch
even though it is 12ms i don't notice any ghosting so idk what the big deal is with millaseconds - app13pi3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Bradl3y
"The shortest response time available on wide screen monitors right now is 8ms. This monitor has 2ms response time. I purchased myself a 21" wide screen, response time is very noticeable in some games."
Not true. I recently purchased a wide screen monitor from Acer with a 6ms response time, and I see little to no ghosting.
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824009061) - pyrates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn marketing. First they say that the response time is for white to black or black to white, which it should be. But now to sound better and so that the time is lower, they tell us it's gray to gray. Now of course they don't change the name response time, but put in small letters that it is the measure of gray to gray and not black to white and vice versa.
- Gdoubleod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or does anyone else think that the Design is lacking. It looks like the bolted a normal monitor onto a sleek yet big and knobby stand. Has Asustek ever come out with anything that is even slightly good looking?
- bonus45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree it the speakers are kinda of a waste, but it it's got an aluminum base. Ditch the speakers, give me wide-screen and I'm there. I'm so tired of crappy plastic computer components.
- dmoffitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it was sounding good until the mention of "Subwoofer" came up. Um thanks NO. nevermind the whole 4:3 thing.....
- dorlerolyat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I need WIDESCREEN & Drop the speakers they are probably crap.
- dephrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whoa, that's pretty damn slick.
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1because gamers totaly want a monitor that won't fit in there excisting LCD carrying device for lanpartys
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTF are you talking about. Widescreen is useless to a lot of gamers that play online games like CS which limit the resolution to standard formats because a wider FOV would give some people an unfair advantage.
