- mmd1080, on 05/14/2009, -3/+72This is the future. Cramming the PC into the monitor was brilliant, and this is brillianter.
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -0/+67Welcome back Commodore Vic20
- Nickedynick, on 05/14/2009, -0/+42Not sure there's a huge market, but I hope it isn't too expensive - it'd make a great backup/portable PC.
More photos: http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-asus- ... - inactive, on 05/14/2009, -1/+36This is the past, actually. The Commodore VIC-20, 64, 128, Amiga 500, etc. etc., not to mention the Apple II computers. Yeah, this is actually a really old concept.
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -0/+35they should put the entire PC in to a mouse. that would be briliantest of all.
- jerrycan, on 05/14/2009, -0/+29I adore my 64
- dowelly, on 05/14/2009, -0/+28Ah, the Commodore 64. That takes me back....
- falafelkiosken, on 05/14/2009, -1/+29probably the brilliantest thing ever
- jerrycan, on 05/14/2009, -2/+25Dear ASUS,
Drop the screen and license/buy the right to use a C64/VIC20 kb/case and put this thing in there. I would buy one in a heartbeat. - blackhole82, on 05/14/2009, -0/+21that's pretty sweet. i wonder how much it's going to cost
- jerrycan, on 05/14/2009, -0/+18A laptop is a screen with a keyboard. This is a keyboard with a screen.
- mccartyba, on 05/14/2009, -4/+16Because that would suck to type on...
- HyperDav, on 05/14/2009, -4/+15Why not another model with a split keyboard with the screen in the middle?
- zombiecarlin, on 05/14/2009, -2/+12Apple will release the same thing 3 years from now for 10x the price and suddenly everyone will praise them for being 'revolutionary'.
- falafelkiosken, on 05/14/2009, -3/+12:s/xp/linux/g
- EagleRock, on 05/14/2009, -1/+10You know something, I'll bet they're on to something here...but I think I can improve on it...
While this setup will work great for now, people will want more and more powerful machines in the future. In order to take advantage of faster processors, proper cooling, and more elaborate designs, we might want to consider splitting the keyboard away from the rest of the computer, creating either a platform under the computer or a "tower" that can go on the floor. We can then properly cool the CPU, and even have expandability for things like dedicated sound cards, dedicated graphics cards, and other peripherals.
Oh...wait. - shifty2, on 05/14/2009, -0/+7The screen on the side is touch sensitive, so its like a touch pad screen.
I don't think it can be used as a primary monitor/screen. I'm sure Asus will have some kind of app that exclusively runs on that screen: media controls, pic slide show, etc...
IIRC, it has HDMI and VGA outputs on it. - inactive, on 05/14/2009, -0/+7can you hook it up to a proper computer and use it as a really really smart keyboard?
Actually, maybe they should make a version with a video INPUT so you can use the little monitor as an extra screen, - inactive, on 05/14/2009, -0/+7Approach carefully; here we find, in the wild, the extremely recherché Atari Fanboy, as he communicates with an equally endangered member of society, the Commodore Fanboy. They manage to avoid the often violent levels of conflict found in their more modern counterparts (the Mac, Windows, Nintendo and Sony fanboys) simply because the things they obsess over have been long forgotten by society in general. Truly a rare find!
- ifruit, on 05/14/2009, -1/+8nice EEEBoard
- Scrappy1850, on 05/14/2009, -1/+8HDMI and VGA
- deltron0, on 05/14/2009, -0/+7Why don't you just put in on there yourself?
- shifty2, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6Honestly, for what it's got, I wouldn't mind paying around $300~$350 for it.
Living in a small apartment, it would be nice to have that and a 20" wide screen LCD.
I can see it also being a nice thin client too. - outtatowner, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6g stands for globally
s/foo/bar/ will replace first occurrence of foo
s/foo/bar/g will do it on the whole input string. - Treshnell, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6I won't be impressed until it fits inside my head, complete with Brain-to-Internet Interface.
- Elranzer, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6Only on Digg™
- Ascus, on 05/14/2009, -0/+5Now if this could be connected to a desktop as an intelligent keyboard with removable storage, I could see a great use for it. Then you are just typing in notes and checking email, don't need the computer just the keyboard. need to do real work, connect it to you computer, it syncs any files you worked on and your ready to go.
- Elranzer, on 05/14/2009, -1/+6$Eleventy Billion dollars
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -0/+5Tech lust! I want one!
- geoken, on 05/14/2009, -0/+5A light workstation that does need to be mobile. I have a monitor at work and a monitor at home, I would love to be able to bring this back and forth. It makes a lot more sense than a laptop considering 95% of the time I use my laptop I'm sitting at my desk (either at home or work).
- CrazySpaniard, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4tag fail
- algaeturd, on 05/15/2009, -0/+4There is also this new device called a LAPTOP. It too has all the working components of a computer embedded within the keyboard!
And YES! This one has a screen built into it TOO!!!
Why do people give a ***** about this? Why wouldn't you just get a laptop and call it a day? - mccartyba, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4Crap, I need to get with the times.
- darkNiGHTS, on 05/15/2009, -0/+4You're the retard then, who wouldn't want to be paid to own a computer.
- astrotrain, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5So many cheesy commercials for it (then it was the 80s), here is the "Adore My 64" one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqrlXUHfUuY - Jektal, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5This seems really effing cool, but I'm having a hard time seeing why I would ever actually want one...
My main home PC is a mid tower filled to the brim with equipment. No ultra small PC (netbook, PC/monitor, PC/keyboard) is going to match that performance. And I generally need that performance.
My media PC hooked to my TV is my prior outdated main PC. Not the best choice, but nice because I already had it. Were I to spend money on a new PC for that purpose, a very small PC (can't think of an example by name, but like the little tiny Dell's) would be best. Little tiny fanless PC with hardware HD video, a large NAS (pref. not in the living room, disks are loud), and a cheap light wireless keyboard. I've already got other stuff attached to the TV, so having one more component in the cabinet doesn't hurt, and I want the keyboard to be just a remote, something that can be tossed around and used from the couch wirelessly.
My work PC is a laptop on a docking station with an external monitor. For day-to day stuff I suppose this would be a nice replacement if it can drive 2 monitors, after all right now I basically have 2 keyboards here taking up room (the laptop, and the external full-size keyboard.) But then I'd lose the ability to just undock the laptop. Yeah, I could take the keyboard with me, but then I'd need a monitor. Easier to just take a laptop.
The only situation I can think of is a "light" workstation that doesn't need to be mobile. But then I think it'd be better to just have one of those PC/Monitor combinations, like the recent iMacs or the HP copycat versions.
Can anyone really think of a legitimate use for this where another style PC wouldn't be better? - TnTBass, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5Seems the Windows XP interface would hold this back, as it really wasn't designed for a screen this size. The start menu takes up 80% of the screen. A different user interface on this device would be a huge benefit. Not saying that interface has to come from Linux, but it would be the most logical choice as getting a customized XP interface is not easily done.
- benologist, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4You sure they can't give you a blowjob too?
- rexxhunt, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4my grandmother isnt playing crysis on max settings, or rendering movies. this would be a perfect computer to set up at her house to a superfluous monitor i have at my house. i think you are looking at the wrong markets for this computer.
granted, the current eee desktop would also fill this market, so i donno, have i made my argument redundant? - fuzzybad, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5Imagine using it from the comfort of your couch, with a wireless HDMI connection to your flat panel TV.
That's the market for this device. - xxNIRVANAxx, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3I wonder if I could use this to playback 720p video? It has HDMI out, but I doubt the atom is going to be able to handle it...
- jordanau, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3Does anyone else prefer to look to the left when they type?
- nikki2300dk, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3Oh, I see what you mean. At my work have projectors or wall monitors in all the meeting rooms As for taking notes, I'm hoping the little screen would be able to handle that. In certain workplaces it could be quite handy at least. I hate hauling around my big, ugly ThinkPad everywhere.
- nikki2300dk, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3I could see using one of these at work. It would be nice to just grab the keyboard and run to a meeting. I could give a presentation or take notes, maybe do some online video conferencing. I have a laptop, but it's always a hassle to have to stop working, save everything, undock it (crossing my fingers it won't freeze up) and drag it to the meeting. Hmm. I want one now.
- tgc1, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3Why don't they just make very small towers or whatever. By the looks of it the computers Asus is capable of putting out should be no bigger than a modem or router. That'd be awesome. But the cost is always what i'm affraid of.
- rac1234, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3I prefer to look over my right shoulder, personally. And it's better if I sit on a spike.
- Chalks777, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4night mares?
http://www.equitour.co.uk/country_pic/Namibia.jpg - geoken, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3The kind who's son dumps all his old gear on her. My parents have a 19 inch CRT and 3 LCD's (17, 19, 20) aka. every monitor I've tossed out to make way for my newer monitor.
- darkNiGHTS, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3Yeah, just like your laptop... why are people acting like only this design would have that problem...
