- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+102ATi Radeon by AMD?
Jesus. I can't see why they arn't hiring you for all their Branding needs. Maybe we should call ABC "News Channel ABC by Disney" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -15/+53Intel has canceled ATI's chipset license after this year.
- urbanight23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40If only they would drop ATI's driver/software department instead.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37I don't know, Radeon is a pretty recognizable product name, so most people that would be buying one would probably get it.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Video cards use standard interfaces. Intel isn't going to build hardware into its AGP and PCI-X slots to detect and disable AMD cards. My motherboard came with AMD chipsets and an onboard Intel network adapter. Interoperability isn't going away.
- digdugsmug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I agree, good hardware, terrible software..period
- unknamed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21the dyslexic Borg....
"Prepare to have your ass laminated..." - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Awesome. I cant wait to built an Intel Core 2 Duo computer and put an AMD Radeon in it!
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I wonder the last person who buys an Official "ATi" videocard gets a prize?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18RTFA. AMD bought ATi. It wasn't just a typical 'merger'.
- popebadass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Maybe we'll get some linux radeon drivers that don't blow chunks now.
- supanaturalhigh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18When did they ever say that they have abandoned nVidia?
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16AMD/ATI cards will still work with Intel systems. You just won't be seeing any ATI chipset based motherboards after this year.
- movienut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14AMD + ATi = DAAMiT
- VSack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15You are forgetting the most important aspect: brand recognition.
Haven't you noticed ads for AMD popping up here and there? The sad fact has been that AMD has had a technically superior product for years but little to no brand recognition outside of the geek circles.
Intel had done such a terrific job of that stupid ding-ding-da-ding that the term PC was almost synonymous with Pentium. Sure the chip was good (originally) but they also had little competition.
Fast forward to today where up until recently AMD has been putting out Intel beater after Intel beater. Recently, Intel finally sprang back into action with a technically competent and superior (in some testing circles) Core-Duo processors. AMD should have made significant market shares, but didn't.
They have finally realized that its all about how ubiquitous your market branding is. Intel has changed slightly, but the 800 lb gorilla doesn't need to. So what does AMD do?
They buy one of the two largest GPU makers in the world.
AMD would be nuts to not change the badging to their own flag. More than anything, I think you will start seeing more and more green and black on the outside of the card boxes, so that their name is more and more in known to the public.
Oh, and if Intel suddenly starts making sure these cards don't work so hot with their processors, expect a nice little addendum to the anti-trust suit already going against Intel for similar practices. - Slayback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@billmccartney:
This is good as the source gets for the bit of news, so take it with a grain of salt:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33072 - chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24I love it.
This is 100% typical in a company that merges with another company.
"We aren't going to change anything".....
......
"As of today, everything has changed. Thanks for sticking around. Pack your desks." - digdugsmug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13i hope not, competion is good!
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Here's a better news item about Intel and ATi:
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/07/26/intel_ati_license_not_revoked/ - Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25Wow that really Angers me for some reason!!
- BitwiseMcgee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12um, yeah, there wouldn't be any lawsuits over that...
It would take all of fifteen minutes for an independent reviewer/gamer to figure out that an amd card on an intel system (or visa versa) is neutered, and there would be chaos in the virtual streets.
Don't you remember what happened with the shady things nvidia/ati were pulling with the 3dmark scores? people watch these things like hawks - iancgi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Their responsibility is to the shareholders not the consumer. They are a corporation their goal is to make money first, save money second, and help the customer third.
- jlgosse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It isn't like that at all.
If Mozilla or Microsoft were acquired by say, Intel, then it would be something along the lines of "Microsoft Internet Explorer by Intel" or "Mozilla Firefox by Intel". That doesn't make much sense, it's just an annoying jumble of words. - billmccartney, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20@strictnein
Can you give a citation for that? - Wiseblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7AMD Athlon, AMD Opteron, AMD Turion...AMD Radeon. It fits rather well.
- nudedave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yea I love the ATI brand. They have been around forever. Are they going to move the ATi Canadian based opperations too?
- Chex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9AMDTI
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -13/+20Sounds monopolistic, maybe
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7AMD
T
I - Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You're using logic. Logic doesn't exactly work with corporate executive egos. If AMD was interested in selling the most product, they would keep the ATi brand name.
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Acquisition" is the word you're looking for. It is subject to different laws and regulations than a merger.
- jasonsfakename, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7AMD makes processor chips...ATI made graphics cards.. how were the two companies competing? I personally think this is a grand step forward for both companies.
- venir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Should have looked before I posted. Masamunecyrus is right, Intel did not revoke the license.
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe this is their way to get into dell?
Since dell currently uses ATI cards, now dell can get an even sweeter deal by using AMD graphics cards and processors. If we see an AMD chip next to an AMD graphics card inside of a dell that will explain AMD's interest in the graphics card market. - mrtrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Dupe (the joke I mean)
- Akram, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Same, i have no idea why, it just sounds stupid maybe?
- JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was just going to mention the drivers as well, but the GeForce 2 GTS was an awesome card when it came out.
- georgelogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AMD had the fastest CPU for three years. During that time, Intel has been developing the next generation chip. The A64 is 4 year old tech, and Core2 is brand new, it'd better be faster.
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Interoperability won't be going away any time soon - although I think you will see a move towards more integrated solutions and in that space you obviously will not have AMD chipsets for Intel Mobos.
However, by dropping the ATI name, it really seems to me that AMD will not be concentrating very much on the high end graphics market. Which is pretty much as I suspected. AMD could care less if they beat out NVidia in the latest graphics benchmarks. I doubt Radeon will go away any time soon, but that business is very cutthroat and I can't see them matching NVidia step for step if it is not their main focus. - LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I had always wondered what the new company would be called, but to drop ATi all together, that just is stupid. ATi has branding recognition, if you change the name of the cards, you will lose many customers who don't want to buy a graphics chip from a cpu manufacturer.
- z3rgRush, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11"We are the Borg. Lower your shields and power down your weapons. You will be assimilated. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Resistance is futile."
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Advanced Micro Devices Technologies Incorporated? I dont think so....
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@foolfromhell ,
More like "surrender your chips". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So much for supporting the Canadian company, but still I've had no problems with ATI cards, I think I've gone from 7200, 8500, 9600, X800, X1800
- jodokast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Brand Formerly Known as ATI...
Has a nice ring to it. - oddball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3underdog in units sold
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Eh... The brand name drop is rather inconsequential. It does, however, put an in-your-face spin on the takeover aspect of it. It doesn't seem right to me, somehow. I can't put my finger on why.
- sumadartson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Let's hope so for AMDTI... I just bought an nvidia card because of the horrendous linux drivers ati writes for their cards.
You'd think they'd devote more resources to this. Especially with XGL+Compiz gaining more acceptance. - matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2heh wonder if Nvida would be able to keep up and come to think of it Apple Buys from AMD and Intel now....
