- Julie188, on 01/06/2009, -0/+21AMD's competition with Intel over the years has been one of the best things for driving up performance and driving down cost of hardware. Gotta love it.
- ginofdagame, on 01/05/2009, -2/+15AMD is always in the trendsetters list...It is also my personal favourites !
- Jektal, on 01/06/2009, -0/+11They're also pretty good for gamers - depending on your price range. If you're in the mid-low price range, AMD still often beats Intel.
- goffy59, on 01/06/2009, -3/+10I use AMD for gaming and I get the exact same joy as anyone who uses Intel. Most people are argue about either brand really know nothing about gaming. Its the memory and video that make all the difference. Now the only thing that might matter with a CPU is the amount of cores and if its 2.0+ ghz, which AMD and Intel both have. I use AMD because they don't have abusive business practices and leave me hanging whenever they come out with something new. I can't find any old Intel CPU's on places like Newgg.com but I can find AMD chips. Its all about choice as far as I'm concerned.
- StupotAce, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5I am running on an AMD Athlon X2 and when I build my next rig, I'm going AMD Phenom for sure. Not because I think AMD is tons better than intel. I think AMD and intel processors are pretty much on par. I am buying AMD because they are a good business and it will be better for everyone if they are still around.
- Topher06, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6Considering business class computers don't need to be that powerful, this is a perfect fit to market a CPU that can't catch Intel for the performance hungry home desktop market.
- mr5150, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5there is no reason to avoid AMD chips as they are perfect for a non-gamer or super data cruncher (CAD), great value and great performance on motherboards that don't cost an arm and a leg.
hope AMD can make this work for them. - smartcause, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5I hope AMD can make a comeback, Intel is feeling a little too comfortable right now (and that's never good for innovation)
- Kamujin, on 01/06/2009, -1/+5CPU's matter a great deal still as not everything can be handled by a GPU.
Additionally, things like memory are greatly affected by CPU choice. AMD's Hyper Memory, INTEL's NorthBridge/SouthBridge, and INTEL's QuickConnect memory bus schemes are all tied to specific CPU architectures.
The reality is that you can make bad choices in this area and still wind up with a decent machine. This doesn't mean your right though. Good choices will still yield relatively better performance. - yhzfridays, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5I used to have AMD - might be time to look at them again
- PacketPaul, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4The article does not specify if the new chips will allow AMD to compete better against Intel. I hope so. AMD looks as if they are on life support. If they stop making CPU's, it will be bad for the industry, and us as consumers.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4I wish AMD would get a little break in this market, I'm so tired of seeing QX9### CPU's for $1300+ on newegg. Sure they're unlocked and I get the same performance out of the regular versions, but as an enthusiast I wouldn't mind a little more competition in that niche.
- offrdbandit, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3My how the processor industry changes over the span of 6 years.
I just finished a new build. The jump from an XP3200 to a Q6600 is quite a leap. AMD fit my needs in the past. Intel current fits my needs.
Anyone care to guess what the state of the industry will be in another 6 years? Here's hoping the CPU industry is even more diverse in the future. - charro, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2LOL
- Dopeness, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2When I glanced at the headline, I mistook 3Q09 for 3009. lol
- idc5, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2AMD vs Intel the battle continues
- elitesystem, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2sounds good! Intel is my choice..lets see wt AMD brings out
- Tom042, on 01/05/2009, -1/+3Nice upgrade to a class of computers that do not have to have the computing power of a home machine.
- Egylover, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1the new AMD processors are even better than dual core
dugg - KibibyteBrain, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1If you don't have a top-of-the-line graphics card, its rare you'd be CPU limited these days, and so an AMD processor would be an ideal choice because they offer much more bang for the buck right now than Intel's offerings. And considering the run the current top-of-the-line cards right now you pretty much have to architect your whole build around powering the suckers, I don't think too many gamers are running them.
The problem is hardware is so darn cheap right now that the extra value of AMD doesn't help it fight the appeal of having the latest and greatest from Intel. Heck, Dell has Core i7 boxes with 6 GB of RAM for under a grand! - Grummond, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Take a look at the (leaked) Phenom II benchmarks. They seem to be as fast as the Core i7 for gaming (a bit faster in games like Crysis and Lost Planet, a bit slower in some other games).
Considering a Phenom II with DDR2 RAM and an AM2+ mobo will cost about half of a similar Core i7 system, i think it's safe to say that for gamers, AMD is back in the game!
Overclocking is reported to be in the "awesome" category as well. - bobbknight, on 01/06/2009, -3/+4AMD needs to be faster and better, this is 3 quarters to late. It will keep the pressure on Intel to make better chips and keep the prices down.
- sgyoung, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2Well, I'm convinced...
- MacEnvy, on 01/06/2009, -3/+3*facepalm*
- sgyoung, on 01/06/2009, -1/+1thanks captain obvious!
- phabio76, on 01/06/2009, -1/+1good
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+1Intel could probably put AMD out of business, but they allow them to exist to avoid going through a ton of anti-trust lawsuits like Microsoft has faced.
- goffy59, on 01/06/2009, -2/+1most people who (not "are")... mistype!****
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -5/+3AMD is wayyyyyyyyyyy better than Intel. The DOD uses AMD chips, as does NASA, Microsoft, and MI5.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -5/+3Take any AMD release schedule with a grain of salt
- wiiittttt, on 01/06/2009, -4/+1AMD won't exist in 6 years. It seems to be a step behind Intel on every front for the past few years. I do hope that some other competition steps up to the plate though as a monopoly helps nobody. ARM im talking to you.
- DeFex, on 01/06/2009, -7/+4watch out celeron!
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -6/+31. You obviously know nothing about gaming. The different between Intel and AMD is (at a fair estimate) %50 more power. Considering how powerful these processors are, that is a lot. AMD processors are by no means "pathetic", but it is very clear and obvious that anyone seriously buying a gaming computer today would buy an Intel processor. A few years ago, AMD was the big man, but the market changed.
2. Why would newegg want to carry old processors? Pre AM2 and LGA 775 sockets are considered ancient in today's market. In fact, I checked now and there were no 939 Socket AMD processors in stock at newegg. - sexybobo, on 01/06/2009, -6/+2"Now the only thing that might matter with a CPU is the amount of cores and if its 2.0+ ghz, which AMD and Intel both have."
Lol try having a 4 core processor at 2.0ghz with 512k cache and tell me it is only the amount of cores the chip has that matters intel is currently winning at power per dollar and the over all power.
"I can't find any old Intel CPU's on places like Newgg.com but I can find AMD chips."
That is because people buy Intel CPU's they aren't sitting on the shelves like AMD chips are.
Don't get me wrong AMD makes great chips but saying they are just as good for gaming as Intel chips is just plain wrong. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -6/+1That machine is not able to be called a computer.
