- RizenBB, on 07/21/2008, -0/+87I, for one, am glad that ATI has come back around with their new series of cards and forced NVIDIA to level on the playing field with pricing. Seeing $150-$200 dollar price drops on the 260 and 280 cards in the first month of release shows just how badly NVIDIA was taking advantage of consumers with no competition.
When I upgrade my system in a few months it will most likely include a 4870 card. - amdownzintel, on 07/21/2008, -0/+26Whether or not you like ATI this is still great for the industry. This industry needs more competition otherwise prices will just go up and up and then that just hurts everyone. The 280 started at $650 and now it's $450 or so. I personally plan on getting a new computer in about a year and I will probably go with an Intel CPU, even though I love my AMD dual core right now. Amd needs to step it up in their CPU department, but then for GPU I will go with ATI as long as they keep up the good work. Good Job guys.
- calebb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+23Great article - I'm glad ATi/AMD got their act together for this series!!
- UncleDavid218, on 07/21/2008, -1/+24Another awesome review by [H]ard|OCP. Way to go Kyle, Brent, and the whole [H] crew.
- RizenBB, on 07/21/2008, -1/+20That's rather ironic since they completely turned around their Linux support since that time, but I guess hold grudges if it makes you feel better.
I personally have no experience with either of their driver sets in Linux, but I think NVIDIA's control panel in Windows is actually much worse and less intuitive now than it was in the GeForce2/3 era. I think ATI has done a great job turning around their driver development. It is world's better now than it used to be. I've used ATI cards for a few years now and not encountered any significant problems. - breaks, on 07/21/2008, -1/+14informative article, the crew at [H] never disappoints.
- cesclaveria, on 07/22/2008, -2/+15ok, maybe 'm being paranoid, but some of this comments sound like bots/spam/bougth comments
"Another awesome review by [H]ard|OCP. Way to go Kyle, Brent, and the whole [H] crew."
"informative article, the crew at [H] never disappoints."
"As always, an excellent article from The [H]."
"Excellent article. Well layed-out and plenty of detail without being overly confusing." - IndigoMoss, on 07/22/2008, -0/+11You'll see a pretty decent improvement going from your 8800GTX to a 4870, especially when AA is enabled.
- swicken, on 07/22/2008, -0/+11I missed ATI *tear*
- devil24, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10As always, an excellent article from The [H].
- AceGoober, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9Excellent article. Well layed-out and plenty of detail without being overly confusing.
- PATSCRU, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9Free AA on some games is huge...being able to turn on 4, 8, or 16x cfaa without having a framerrate dip is insane.
- MAGZine, on 07/22/2008, -0/+9Awesome.
So can AMD's next processor be just as awesome in comparison to their video card to nVidia's?
That would make me smile. - Discobiscuits, on 07/22/2008, -0/+9Can't get any more spot-on than that. Well said, mate.
- frgmstr, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8We figured that this really needed to be covered considering some of the terrible AA specialties that AMD/ATI has pulled in the past. This stream processor driven edge-detect AA is the real deal if you have the SPs to push it.
- Hiltonizer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8Keep it up Brent and Kyle... nice article.
- Darksoul, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8What the ***** why is he being dugg down hes just asking a ***** question.
- Trixrox, on 07/22/2008, -1/+9Yes.
- RyanBlack, on 07/22/2008, -7/+13I have a Q6600, 4GB RAM, Vista 64, 8800GTX. Would I notice a big difference in performance with a 4870?
- xtrench, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet
- handler, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6Would this be considered a good upgrade over a 8800GT?
- iofthestorm, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6AMD release hundreds of pages of specifications, and got a team working on open source drivers. If that's not commitment to open source I don't know what the ***** else is. What's Microsoft doing on anything close to that scale?
- iofthestorm, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6Both the 4850 and the 4870 would smoke an 8800GT, so yes. But I'd say if you just got that recently, it might be worth it just to hold on to it and wait for prices to go down further. Personally I like to skip a few generations, and even though the 4850 is really tempting I'm probably going to wait for the 5000 series at least before upgrading.
- InorganicMatter, on 07/21/2008, -3/+9Go, go, ATI!
I'm still not going to support them after the "screw you" attitude they took towards Linux users for over 10 years, but I'm all for anything driving the NVIDIA prices down. - SealandRes1, on 07/22/2008, -2/+7Great! Now where is my ATi physX?
- ParaSwarm, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5I've got one in my computer now and I couldn't be any happier, especially for the price.
- RyanBlack, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5Thanks guys!
- Trixrox, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5New Catalyst 8.7's out today btw.
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx - frgmstr, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5Crysis does not support any form of transparency AA on either ATI or NVIDIA hardware, it is a game issue.
- godinster, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4Absolutely, it's awesome and a large upgrade.
- da_bradler, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5I'd say 20-30% the 8800GTX is a little bit slower then the new 4850 so if your card isn't shown in come of the comparison reviews out there just use the 4850 or more closely the 9800GTX as your reference.
- PatrickBrown, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4RTFA?
- Linh, on 07/22/2008, -1/+4when the hell is a mac version coming.... oh right, it's always a couple of generations behind... damn you apple
- jacekpoplawski, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3ATI pays Linux developers for creating fully open xf86-video-ati.
nVidia just created closed source driver.
You can't compare that. - Trixrox, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3It feels good to buy ATI again. It is nice to have an article explain some of these weird AA modes that I would probably never use.
- Rizzler, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3A plausible argument, to say the least.
My first reply was going to be "..." but I felt I needed more depth. - PatrickBrown, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Why would you use an emulator to play these games? Just use Wine. Also, unless you are running the game in software rendering mode, what emulation is going on as far as graphics are concerned?
Anyone that has ever played a 3D Windows game on Linux knows this: The game typically does not run slowly, rather it runs without the advanced graphics / technologies that make games look really nice. - inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3not true when the 8800 is better than the 9600
- eggie015, on 07/22/2008, -1/+4i really think that IBM should buy AMD....
they will get to keep the X86 license aswell because it will still be an American owned company which i think was the condition if amd was bought out and they will get a graphics division aswell
cause amd looks like a sinking boat, pity cause it has heaps of potential and their athlons (compared to the old pentiums of the time) and these new radeons show this potential.
i also don't want amd to die cause the market needs the competition to keep the prices down, it was happening with nvidia in the last generation imagine what it would be like without competition at all - zaii7, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2just when i thought my pentium 4 computer was finished i put in a ati agp 3850
and now can run team fortress and bioshock on high and crysis on med
glad to see ati giving nvidia a run for their money - calebb, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Just [H]ard|OCP aficionados :)
- djbon2112, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2AMD's processor IS awesome in comparison: price/performance not overclocked, they're awesome. Intel is killing them because they have $300+ processors at very high clock speeds that are very overclockable too. For less than $100 AMD's processors can't be beat (and have no real competition from Intel)
- cutchyacokov, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2It looks to me like the contrast is slightly higher on the ATi screenshots. This seems to make the trees look more jagged, but if you look a little more closely they also appear more detailed. Also compare the wood-grain on the house and the extremes of dark and light, the nVidia images look a little more washed out. I am reasonably certain that these differences are due to a slight difference in contrast and nothing more.
- Elliuotatar, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1That's nice, but it wasn't crysis, it was a shot from Half Life 2 with an elevator, and In HL2 the fences are antialiased.
- daphatgrant, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Nice to see ATi making a comeback.
- Smills, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Well, this was certainly an excellent article, but I disagree with the way that they review video cards. They check 'real world performance' which is fine if no new games are ever going to come out, but doesn't do the best job of giving a direct % performance difference comparison between the cards. If you want to work out the best value for money you need nice clean numbers.
- kjubik, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Soon my laddy

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/0 ... - dsmx, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Yes, vista would run better.....
- Genma, on 07/22/2008, -0/+14x maybe, more than that no. ati 4k series was looking awsome until marketing had to ***** it up with that "8x always on for free" ruse. which [H] proved was not the case unless you are using x2.
- Fergy, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Phenom is pretty good and is already faster in certain situations than a higher clocked core2. The change to 45nm is going to give a nice boost. Lower power and higher clocks and lower prices.
