- saleen761, on 06/18/2009, -1/+87I suppose they felt 'Intel Inside' stickers would be too cumbersome to hide.
- Ninh, on 06/18/2009, -2/+86CPUs are a bitch to smuggle, considering they can easily be spotted from planes and satellites due to their tremendous size.
In other news: Having a choice of smuggling AMD or Intel chips, Iran chose the former for being more suitable for high performance computing purposes. - zippea, on 06/19/2009, -4/+65But can their missiles run crysis?
- solid12345, on 06/19/2009, -3/+58It is simple
AMD's color is green, the color of Islam
Intel is blue, the color of Israel/Judaism. - sepelester, on 06/18/2009, -3/+561. Go abroad
2. Buy chips
3. Go home
Alternative:
1. Ask friend abroad to buy chips
2. Invite friend for tea and butter scones - RudeTurnip, on 06/19/2009, -0/+43I didn't know Newegg shipped out that far.
- WarWizard89, on 06/19/2009, -1/+39I suppose you just hot swap out the processor and see the difference right away eh?
- billricardi, on 06/19/2009, -1/+38And I'm certain that there are millions of weapons out there with U.S. steel, fissionables mined in Canada, copper from Utah, various chips and boards fabricated all over Asia... so what?
- lemur, on 06/19/2009, -0/+29I think they were considering price vs performance.
- spritom, on 06/18/2009, -2/+30It's probably the 9600's with the B2-stepping/TLB bug that can't run Crysis.
- MWeather, on 06/19/2009, -9/+34Yep, he didn't even use the words "Israel", "wipe" or "map".
He said the regime occupying Jerusalem will vanish from the pages of time. The context was that just like Saddam's regime and the Shah's regime before it, the Israeli regime would disappear. And he wasn't even saying it himself (not that i think he doesn't share the same opinion). He was quoting/paraphrasing Khomeini.
"I am not going to defend Israel, but I did bury you as Ahmadinejad is a total war mongerer."
Got a quote? - harrisbradley, on 06/19/2009, -1/+25AhMaDinejad
- jeremymccurdy, on 06/19/2009, -0/+24Maybe the emulators are just optimized for Intel processors?
- OfNumbers, on 06/18/2009, -2/+24The French still arm their missiles with Intel processors.
http://bit.ly/QmI8c - inactive, on 06/19/2009, -2/+21"which is the sort of stuff needed to create a ballistic missile capability more accurate than Saddam Hussain's comedy Scud missile threat."
now it is a comedy, but before they were WMD. - kingmanic, on 06/19/2009, -6/+23Both are controlled by the feverishly religious at this point. Thats scary.
- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -1/+17and probably run linux.
- jjason1985, on 06/18/2009, -39/+55Iran is not attacking anyone.
Israel is the only nuclear power in the region. They are the only ones making threats. (if you quote Ahmadinejad saying he wants israel wiped off the map, then you are a liar. His true words: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article16 ... - Meursault, on 06/19/2009, -0/+16Should've gone with ARMs
- lilhelper, on 06/19/2009, -1/+16Yea and the ram is Kingston. and the HD is a SSD from seagate... (which will cause the missile to fail mid flight)
- gimpbully, on 06/19/2009, -0/+14because PCXS2 is not scientific simulation. Different codes benefit differently to various features. The opterons *were* much better at memory throughput than the intels back in that generation.
- doshindude, on 06/19/2009, -1/+14you forgot:
4. ???
5. Profit! - InetRoadkill, on 06/19/2009, -1/+13The "Intel Inside" sticker on the side of a missile didn't look menacing enough.
AMD: Ammadinnerplate's Messenger of Death :P - Fozefy, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12That's what I was thinking the whole time I was reading this article...this amount of chips could fit in the back of a pickup truck. Its not like anyone is even going to look either, the only people that might is Iranian customs lol.
- richmomz, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12I remember a story that Saddam was using old Playstation parts for SCUD missile guidance systems. If Iran tried that with XBOX 360 parts half of them would probably suffer from a RRoD before they reached their targets XD
- Braxo, on 06/19/2009, -2/+14The software on the chips better not have been written with an Apple computer, that would be against the User Terms.
- specialbuddy1, on 06/19/2009, -0/+11Haven't you read the reviews. Actual quote, "I just dropped this baby in a surface-to-surface missile and it flys"
- AZSanMan, on 06/19/2009, -1/+11To make matters worse, Iran's glorious missiles, which could end up firing in the direction of Intel's R&D labs in Israel.. no, that would be ironic.
- ileftfark, on 06/19/2009, -1/+11Heh. Someone else fell for the Black Edition's 'overclocking' capabilities.
- pintomp3, on 06/19/2009, -2/+12Theocracies suck no matter which side you are on.
- dsanonline, on 06/19/2009, -2/+11I fully endorse this product and/or service.
/AMD pwns. - solid12345, on 06/19/2009, -9/+18Regardless of what he meant that day, Iranian officials have numerous times led procession chants of "Death to Israel" going back to 1979. You can take sides all you like but stop ***** us, it is pretty obvious the Islamic regime wants the Jews gone from Jerusalem.
And this was not the first time Ahmedenijad said inflammatory things about Israel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FckLO8HcNyo
"Death to Israel"? how do you spin that one?
And how do you spin the Protocols of Zion being taught in public schools in the country as scientific fact? Or editorial cartoons depicting Jews as hook-nosed kikes out to conquer the world? - isunktheship, on 06/19/2009, -1/+10I love Intel.. but feel I must say this:
THAT EXPLAINS THINGS. - vsujohn2, on 06/20/2009, -0/+7They would fire the missiles, but they are le tired....
- Ascus, on 06/19/2009, -1/+8If Intel was priced better, they would have Intel Inside logos.
- DorXtar, on 06/19/2009, -0/+7I have a 9600... and the TLB bug erratta doesn't affect me! Look at me! I'm so carefree!
- eclectro, on 06/19/2009, -0/+7I have a hard time understanding how computer chips can be *kept out* of Iran. Aren't all these people "twittering" in Iran using computers?
- scarwars, on 06/19/2009, -1/+8"Henry F. Phillips (1890 – 1958), a U.S. businessman from Portland, Oregon, after whom the Phillips-head screw and screwdriver were named."
- ilgaz, on 06/19/2009, -0/+6I would bet SE Linux, from NSA even. The most trustable Linux and still open source.
So, with this logic, NSA is at fault for "providing OS for Iran missiles", with American taxpayers money!!!
(hi echelon!) - dagamer34, on 06/19/2009, -3/+9Course they'd go AMD since most of Intel's chip designs are made in.... ISRAEL!
- HonoredMule, on 06/19/2009, -0/+6The article makes it sound incredible and highly suspicious that somehow the government of a large nation managed to smuggle a few palm-sized pieces of commodity hardware from somewhere else in the world. Call me crazy, but that just doesn't sound like it would actually be that hard to do.
The last time I bought computer hardware, I didn't even have to mention my citizenship, and there are a billion places I could legally bring it to...surely some of those places would be lax enough that I can smuggle it from there, especially given that Iran itself isn't going to be at all upset with me. - Siegfriedson, on 06/19/2009, -5/+11"To make matters worse, Iran's glorious missiles, which could end up firing in the direction of Intel's R&D labs in Israel"
Why should we Americans care what happens to Israel's labs? - Khast, on 06/19/2009, -0/+6By any chance are they the surplus Pentium 60s that were left over in the 90s?
- kuys, on 06/19/2009, -0/+6Again do you even know what the hell your talking about. Most of the X3 (as long as you have ACC supported on your board ie SB of 750) will unlock and run all four cores.
Do you know where Celerons came from? They where Pentiums that didn't run up to snuff so Intel disabled parts, say cache, etc and dropped the speed and sold them at lower prices. It makes perfect business sense to do this. Why throw away apart when it still has uses. - JROXZ, on 06/20/2009, -0/+6Flame War ON!
- TheGuruStud, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5and the AMDs use A LOT less power than those nehalems. Those things are freakin deep fryers on silicon. It cost a lot of cash to power and cool large server farms and supercomputers. AMD wins every time.
- goffy59, on 06/19/2009, -1/+6Well an Opteron compared to a Xeon for supercomputer = better power conservation and memory latency(with AMD). Plus when you can connect computers together on a network using HyperTransport, it can increase the latency even more. As far as processing power, Intel owns currently. If AMD was a ***** as all of you describe. How come to this day a ***** load of supercomputers still use Opterons? And if you look back at reviews (I'm not sure about this current year), they yield better memory latency then Xeon processors. I have no idea about the new Xeons though.
- SuperMoses, on 06/19/2009, -7/+12Last time I checked, it was the US that put Iran in the "axis of evil", it was Bush that threatened world war III, it was McCain that threatened "bomb bomb bomb Iran", and it was Obama, Clinton, McCain, Bush, etc that all treat Iran as if they're not allowed to have a nuclear program, which is perfectly legal under the NPT and is a necessity if they want to move their energy program forward.
"Death to Israel" chants by some Iranians is minor in comparison to the words said by US top officials.
@solid12345: Revolutionary Guard split that US/Star of David flag with a sword? OMG! Did they invade a country that led to the deaths of more than a million Iraqis? Did they invade Afghanistan and force Christianity upon them as some US soldiers are doing? (http://mydailyclarity.com/2009/05/the-us-christian ...
If you guys are honestly so offended by "Death to Israel" by some Iranians and the symbolic flag cutting by some members within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, where is your outrage for the crap that top US officials are saying and members within the US military are doing?
When was the last Iran were the aggressors in a conflict? Now ask when was the last time US or Israel were the aggressors. - TsuruchiBrian, on 06/19/2009, -0/+5How did the Iranian government get AMD chips??
How the hell did every Iranian that owns a personal computer get Intel or AMD chips? It's not like they are designing their own CPU's in Iran. I don't know why this is so shocking.
If they have computers then they have Intel and AMD chips. - scarwars, on 06/19/2009, -1/+6In the mean time, my Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition boots up to Windows 7 in 11 seconds.
Beat that Intel. -
