- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think what the article really shows is that we'll have to wait until DDR2-800 RAM hits the market before we can expect to see serious improvements from the higher RAM clocks. I'll be building a new system in a year or so, and will probably go with an AM2 mobo because of the upgrade path. The X2 5000+ and the FX-62 both sound impressive.
- QettoE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad that there is no noticable differences. I just paid a fortune to upgrade my computer to Opteron 170 and 2GB Mushkin RedLine XP4000! So it's definitely a keeper!
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Duplicate
- ThickFog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im wainting for this to upgrade my comp. I want ot be ready fo rhte future
- latinjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I must have read that differently because I thought they were saying that AMD delayed the released of the new interface this long because you have to have DDR2-800 ram to have performance that is on par with DDR400 on the 939 chipset.
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am excited about the potential for this processor!
But for those wonder why there isn't a huge boost in speed:
Even with DDR2-800 you only get a increase in overall memory bandwidth, and only a match to DDR1 CAS2 Latency.
It doesn't make any sense to release a processor simply to have DDR2 tagged onto it, when in fact it's performance is slower (even if theoretical bandwidth is higher)
DDR2 800Mhz at 4 clock cycles of latency is effectively equal to DDR1 400Mhz at 2 cycles of latency. - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh, my DFI LP UT nF4 U-D, Opty 148 at 285*11, and my 2GB of G.Skill Extreme will hold me over for quite some time, until AM2 shows some major number increases I won't jump the s939 ship.
- tomciob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i hope there isn't much of an improvement
i just upgraded to an opteron 165 in my shuttle sn2p
and i plan to keep this for a while since all new equipment is crippled w/ drm chips and what not. - Tsuwamono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AMD seems to be pounding Intel with innovation after innovation. If only we could get then to be alittle bit better at multitasking. If they did that they could deffinately pull on the media center market aswell. Doesnt matter though, as long as im a gamer ill be buying AMD.
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0quick qeustion, opteron is better than say you raverage amd if so why?
- Rubicon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad to see AMD is still stickin' it to the man !
- Calculon64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From what I've heard Opterons are better for overclocking.
- agreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no i think the 667 ram is on par with ddr400. the 800 is the first tier where a real boost is seen
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Changing sockets = planned obsolescence. Nothing more.
- sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For all you guys hoping that there isnt a significant improvement... WHat the *****? Keep em coming AMD
- ravuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not another stinkin' socket! I just got done replacing my videocard, motherboard and CPU to go to socket 939.
- klbclem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can wait forever with that sort of logic RetroEvolute, "model [will] introduce the new tech" "will boost it up a level"
Tech is always changing, and it always gets better.
Anyways intel sux for desktops, at least untill it gets some new tech, but intel is much better for laptops (assuming u want to b at least somewhat mobile with it). The core duo and other centrino tech is AMAZING for laptops, but AMD64/Opteron/FX is AMAZING for desktops - RetroEvolute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah... I'm just going to wait for the Socket F, because, from what it sounds to me, AM2 is just the model to introduce the new tech, and then the F will boost it up a level. If going to 65nm is going to improve speeds for intel so much (intel claimed that changing their architecture to the newer, smaller 65nm as opposed to the 90nm curerntly used made their speeds 20% greater than current tech AMDs), I don't see why it can't improve AMD's speeds as well... I mean, there's not much programming to changing things to 65nm is there? And if I'm correct, there definately should not be much difference in improvement between intel and amd's own 65nm processors. Therefore, 65nm will improve speed all around.
Anyway... I was thinking about upgrading this summer, but now that I've seen these results, maybe I'll wait until winter and hope the F socket comes out soon after am2...
Meh, still... A very interesting read. Nice to see some benchies, whether or not they really improve upon anything... - Ponch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0tom is horrible and bias
- kidtone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0amd does suck, j/k
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+01n7eL 15 T3h R0x0rZ3z!
- ineedyourmom1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0amd sucks!
