- ichbinladen, on 02/25/2009, -1/+77Chicks dig the nitrogen burn scars you got while overclocking your computer.
- active1x0, on 02/25/2009, -2/+40As an overclocked processor, absolutely. AMD specifically designed the Phenom II to trump Intel's i7 in this regard.
However, at stock speeds - absolutely not. Intel's top-tier i7 is still the fastest processor out of the box. But keep in mind, it costs almost $1,000 while AMD's flagship 940 Phenom II can be had for under $250.
The Phenom II and the i7 are radically different processors, but the cheapest i7 is almost $300 and only runs at 2.66GHz to boot. Look at the Phenom II's equivalent processor in clock speed - 95W power draw versus 130W for an i7. AMD has their head in the right place though to compete in the price range that sells the most chips. - guardianx, on 02/24/2009, -25/+57But will it play Crysis?
- chrisinsocalif, on 02/25/2009, -0/+31Yes! I sure hope AMD pulls closer to Intel, because competition means lower prices for the consumer!
- Lyndoman, on 02/25/2009, -3/+29I heard it was killer for playing pong, but it's just a rumour.
- rhcerff, on 02/25/2009, -2/+26Imagine solitaire on that!
- Mohdoo, on 02/25/2009, -3/+27Interesting. That would mean that...Technically...AMD has the best performing chip right now? At least when being tested by 3DMark. Other benchmarks probably vary.
- phrozen209, on 02/25/2009, -9/+32AMD v Intel and ATI v nVidia flame wars.....3....2....1.... FIGHT!!!
- acegi, on 02/25/2009, -0/+21ram plays a small role in terms of actual FPS.
the whole 3dmark program is less than 500 meg. it's plenty. - unusualbob, on 02/25/2009, -0/+17You are aware that the whole RRoD thing was an overheating issue right?
- passedoutghost, on 02/25/2009, -4/+21FPS on an Xbox? lol. It's great for ***** and giggles, but you can't beat the accuracy of a mouse and keyboard.
- GawtMilk, on 02/25/2009, -0/+15"Honey, where'd you get those scars?"
"I was overclocking my Phenom from 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz"
"..."
"It was a knife fight, you should have seen the other guy". - zerohelix, on 02/25/2009, -2/+16it only had 2 gigs of ram?!
- mlarma, on 02/25/2009, -0/+13Liquid Helium is nuts. Helium can't be cooled low enough to get to a solid. It would be a liquid all the way to absolute zero...also, as someone once said, if you are somewhere you can see it in liquid state (and it is in the same environment as you, not behind glass, etc.), it'll be the last thing you see because of the pressure and temperature required to maintain the liquid state. That said, did you know liquid helium makes an MRI at the hospital possible? Yep...liquid helium=superconducting electromagnets. Pretty awesome...pretty expensive...and just plain crazy to use for a PC.
- Matt88, on 02/25/2009, -6/+18For ***** sake please stop with the lame "But will it play Crysis".
- shiv68, on 02/25/2009, -2/+14Obviously your computer cannot play Crysis.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+11better for gaming... im running at 140 hz right now
- Grummond, on 02/25/2009, -1/+12Someone already got round to it, it didn't make it, it's #2 on the list.
- darknecross, on 02/25/2009, -0/+10They're being sponsored by AMD to do this, so I think you can cut the AMD vs Intel argument in relation to Team Finland.
Also, didn't they use Liquid Helium as well last time? Or was it just not mentioned here? - CanIGetAWitness, on 02/25/2009, -0/+9OK, did they really use liquid nitrogen or did they just run the bench outside...
/damn Finland is cold - unusualbob, on 02/25/2009, -2/+10A few things:
1) This is not first place if you include non-standard drivers, if thats the case then the actual record holder is by 'WTF?' at 45559.
2) Even if you exclude that result they still have beaten their own record since this went down, this video shows 35698, while their new record is 35806. Via http://service.futuremark.com/search/3dmark06.acti ...
3) They used liquid helium, not just nitrogen, to get it to the top mark.
4) This is not a dupe from just a little while ago that had 2000+ diggs, this is a sequel, last one was with 3Dmark05
http://digg.com/hardware/AMD_Phenom_II_Overclocked ... - orion2013, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7YES IT CAN VERY VERY WELL!!!
- cowboy86, on 02/25/2009, -3/+10A CRT monitor? Seriously?
- AngelBunny, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7actually no. here is the official world record list for 3D Mark Vantage:
http://service.futuremark.com/search/3dmarkvantage ...
The older 3D Mark (06) world records are AMD CPUs because of the difference in the engine. The newest 3D mark threads better which gives the i7 the upper hand. For older games with no or little threads the AMD CPUs hold the record currently. - evilevil, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6Anybody else get distracted by the link to the Russian Tennis Girls Video on that page?
- chrislewis, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5This is the 3dmark06, previously posted was the 3dmark05.
- Grummond, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5Nice, the new Phenoms are certainly great news for those of us who don't have an unlimited budget for our gaming boxes.
Now i can get a CPU that feels like it's "sort of" highend for less than i paid for my last CPU.
Only one problem, how to decide between the X4-940 and the X3-720.
The X4-940 is quad core, but the X3 is way cheaper (145$) and gets you 97% of the performance when oc'ed. (both are reported to do 3.7-3.8 ghz on air easily) - djpaec, on 02/25/2009, -3/+8This is waaay old, in internet terms. I was pretty sure this was already on DIGG. But I could be wrong I coulda saw it elsewhere.
bigboss65: I'm sure i7 could smash it, but you're also gonna pay-2 to 4 times the price for a i7 compared to the phenom. Not really a hard choice. Hmm spend $1-1.5k doing a AMD build that's comparable with the i7 or spend $1k+ just buying a processor. - w00tnot, on 02/25/2009, -6/+10I might as well keep the nitrogen and use it next time I want to play xbox.
***** thing sucks, PC gaming all the way. - AngelBunny, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4this is actually 2nd place world record. Here is the official 3D Mark 06 world record list:
http://service.futuremark.com/search/3dmark06.acti ... - Cheepnis, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4Actually, these same guys topped the record live at Assembly Winter 2009 in Finland few days after this.
I really hope the companies get tight on competition so we get cheaper ***** in the future. - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4i got the x4 940 and im running at 3.5 ghz 25-30 C
pretty satisfied - wafflesomd, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4Neato.
- dotMH, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Pfft. Human eye isn't an electronic device. It's organic and the rate is dynamic. Try comparing ANYTHING 70hz vs 140hz. You'll notice the difference.
- jstem1994, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3I hope this gets AMD back in the equation. Still running an old AMD64 754 myself, but competition is a good thing. (Especially if AMD gets back to the old days of way cheaper for comparable performance.)
- atruelunatic, on 02/25/2009, -3/+6That's the same thing someone said when this video was first on front page when that first came out.
- crappish, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Yep, THIS actual record is at 2nd place because the same guys broke their own record in Winter Assembly, a week ago, or so.
- crappish, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Well, yes and no. Liquid helium will stay in liquid form to absolute zero but A) it can be solidified through pressure and B) pressures in MRI's really aren't that high, though you would be dead when placed inside a container with liquid helium but that would be true with most of cryogenic liquids. Or any gas bottle.
And yes, liquid helium, or any other cryogenic liquid, can be used for superconducting magnets. Though I agree that they are quite awesome. - rolf, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3"My last girlfriend scratched them in while we were making love.... wait, what?" *Ducks a flying vase and assorted kitchen knives*
- Jhiaxuz, on 02/25/2009, -1/+4On a technical standpoint, this would show that AMD has created a very fine processor to match the enthusiast + market; something which I have felt they were a little detached from. However, there are enthusiasts and then there are extremists. I overclock, but I would never want to change caps, mount a DICE/LN cooling tower over my processor and run it on a torture wrack all for the sake of speed as I know most extremists do. Mostly because I lack the funds to say 'oh I just fried that setup, lets go get another one'.
Also, I think synthetic tests are a waste of time and I say that not in favor of Intel or AMD but as a general standard to benchmarking your system.
The least this will do is that it will stimulate more (better?) production between Intel and AMD and that is where we all benefit from. Performance and price wise. - Gibletoid, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2CRT's can get higher resolutions at comparable size.
My 19 inch crt i used to have was running in 2048x1536.
My new 24 inch LCD peaks at 1920x1200. - Psythik, on 02/25/2009, -2/+4The better question is "Will it play GTA IV"?
- musntSurfatWork, on 02/25/2009, -1/+3they all suck, Amiga FTW
- Chrysalii, on 02/25/2009, -1/+3Console vs PC war in 0, -1, -2, -3
- rockrapdude, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2But what about the graphics card? How overclocked were the ATi cards? I weren't the videocards overclocked to the extreme and then cooled with liquid nitrogen? I bet you could get a few more points out of that.
- TheMagician2007, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Just to clarify: They broke their old record (which is now 2nd place) in an event called Assembly Winter a couple of days after they got this one. 1st and 2nd places are by the same team using the same hardware.
