- newsboys, on 01/23/2009, -1/+57I wish people would stop bashing AMD. They do NOT have the fastest chip on the market right now, but without them, Intel would go unchecked and have a monopoly on desktop CPUs, and prices would skyrocket. Support the industry by supporting AMD. AMD make quality products, and their price to performance ratio is always awesome. Plus, I don't know about you, but I've never bought a high-end chip (like, $1000 for a CPU), and AMD competes great at both the budget and mid-range CPUs.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -1/+32AMD FTW! Intel makes decent hardware but are horribly overpriced.
- yhzfridays, on 01/22/2009, -1/+25SWEET!!!
- vsujohn2, on 01/22/2009, -1/+18Then how is your mom gonna provide for you on such a low wage?
- Fib0112, on 01/22/2009, -1/+16Under perform is a relative term. If I can get 15% less performance for 50% less price, I would be happy. I'd rather spend the money I saved on a better video card which will do a lot more for my game frame rate than a CPU. Not to mention that they are still pairing Phenom IIs with DDR2 ram. Let's wait and see what the results will be when DDR3 chipsets come out.
- Jabrams2, on 01/22/2009, -1/+15That's just great news all around
- AndyLocoweed, on 01/22/2009, -1/+13I like AMD as well (DB servers run it, I rock it at home) but I won't bash Intel. They cost more, but you've got to really think about what it is you need to do when you buy a CPU. Intel can smoke an AMD in some places and then AMD can smoke Intel in others (performance per watt comes to mind).
- TheThirdLevel, on 01/23/2009, -1/+8AMD makes damn good processors. Face it, its not going to be the fastest processor on the market, but for the majority of computer owners, its more than enough.
For example, a 2.8ghz Phenom II for around $195 is a great deal if you don't want to shell out $280 for a Core 2 Quad of the same speed. Budget prices, awesome upgradeability, great performance (seriously, you can overclock it if it really matters to you), and the MOST important part - a cool logo.
Obviously the techies and hardcore gamers might settle for C2Q or i7, but Phenom II should be more than enough for most people. - houndeyex, on 01/23/2009, -1/+8I still buy AMD chips? Lots of processing for a good price.
- BananaGrabber, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7To those who think this is mostly due to the economic situation, it's not. CPUs get price cuts every few months due to the rapid rate of new and faster processors coming out each year.
- donalddugg, on 01/22/2009, -2/+9That's because of the global financial crisis, you know. Soon everything will be soooo cheap hope we'll have enough money to buy
- ZapZilla, on 01/22/2009, -1/+8not necessarily, lower cost to buy these processor could boost sales and in turn make more money for AMD
- TopherT, on 01/22/2009, -0/+7Economies of scale!
- newsboys, on 01/23/2009, -1/+7lol. I know you're going to be dugg down for spamming, but I have to say, I like your enthusiasm.
- reason74, on 01/23/2009, -0/+6The price cut is good and all, however, I don't believe there is a true need to buy quad core yet. Most software out to day is just now being updated for dual core. Me personally, I think it is better to buy a Athlon 64 X2 under $100. It plays all the games today if you have a good video card and its easy on the wallet. I'm not one to to geek out over 5-3 fps though.
- clickwir, on 01/23/2009, -0/+6This is nice to know... however I'm still one of those people affected by the "These work in all AM2 boards.... well except for a few". Yea.
ABIT KN9 SLI. No go for anything Phenom related. AMD, if you are reading this, get on the horn with ABIT and tell them to get it together. I'd buy a Phenom right now if I could use it. But I can't and I can't justify the extra expense of a new motherboard right now. Maybe next year. - FXNGLAS, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5How about lowering the cost on the rest of the phenom lines too.
- TheThirdLevel, on 01/23/2009, -0/+5Not at all. AMD is giving Intel a reason to actually work, which is good for us.
- specialK16, on 01/22/2009, -1/+6If that's the case, then we'll see in a few years Intel stalling again like they did some years ago before AMD came in.
- smmakira, on 01/23/2009, -0/+5Not to mention Abit is going out of business.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 01/23/2009, -1/+6That's awkward, the Phenom II competes directly with the Q9xxx line.
- BananaGrabber, on 01/23/2009, -1/+5You're a moron.
- byronm, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4The phenom II is quad core 2.8 or 3ghz 45 nm with more cache than the x2 6000
although for 80 bucks, the x2 is a steal. - craterburnsu, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4Only if it increases their sales, and thus forces Intel to do the same. The competition is what we need.
- rishid, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4This is in response to their price slashing. Hopefully Intel will slash their prices again.
Fun fun, luckily I am building a new computer in the next couple weeks. - infernal6, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4Yep, newegg was an 85w 64 x2 6000 right now for around 80$.
I'll take a 3.1 Ghz dual core over a 2Ghz quad core any day! - dsmx, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4Intel hardware is overpriced because AMD don'thave a processor that competes with their top range stuff, it's the same thing as when the nvidea 8800 series was launched ATI had no answer for 2 years.
- Evilblobs, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3Except that the difference between 1280x720 and 1920x1080 is blatantly obvious.
Especially if you're a graphics douchebag like me.
consoles all render at 720p (if thats what you're alluding to) in most games anyways. - Evilblobs, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3If you don't think that quad cores are useful for the apps you use....
then yes, you dont need a quad.
For video editing, rendering, converting, etc, theres no substitute for more threads. - SchmuckofNI, on 01/22/2009, -1/+4This is great news! Lets hope that the am3 cpus will be cheap too. :)
- NinjaGod, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3As good as this is, I never want to hear about people losing jobs. Not only does it slow down the progression of technology, but someone is possibly living on the street. It's a sad world out there.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 01/23/2009, -1/+4Intel has also slashed their prices.
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/5232/img0025000 ... - Shendare, on 01/23/2009, -2/+5DUDE!!!
What does mine say? - firext0l, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2$500 to max everything?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
You're now $500 over budget. Do'h! - firext0l, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Your grandma's PC can run WoW.
- lyssword, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2did you check your mobo's website? maybe they have updated bios to support PII
- supermanly, on 01/22/2009, -2/+410 cent prostitutes will be so much cheaper a year from now!
- metalstorm, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2I don't think most people buy Intel just to say "Look I have an Intel inside." It's just over the last couple of years Intel has been the better buy overall even though AMD made it closer with aggressive price cuts.
I was unimpressed by the Phenom release but I am glad AMD did better with the Phenom II. They are now back into my list of possibilities but Intel's better overclock results with the Q6600 still tops my list.
AMD is good for the market, I hope these price cuts allow for some stronger sales. - inactive, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2The Q6600 is 190. The Q9300 is 190. What part of budget does that not constitute? Are you ***** high? Core2Quad does not cost 280. The 9550 may, but that's again, apples to oranges. The low end phenom II vs. the high end core2quad.
- chrislewis, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Just upgraded to Phenom II 940, runs great. OC to 3.2 just on multi, havent played with anything higher.
- Xidane, on 01/22/2009, -3/+5good time to be upgrading.
- Orderless, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2While you are correct about the frequency of CPU price cuts, the Phenom 2 has only been available since the 9th of this month. I think that the 18% reduction is due to AMD's early adoption tax being removed. But a couple of weeks is quite soon for that to happen. If the chips had been flying off the shelf at their original prices, they would not have been marked down and that can, at least partially, be blamed on our economic situation.
- firext0l, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2You mentioned HP.... Ut oh.
- fluxion, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2well the "early adoption" tax tends to be price-gouging on the part of retailers...then the price settles back to the actual MSRP. initial MSRP is generally set for at least a quarter...these are official price cuts however.
i think they're just adjusting for demand.
hope it pays off for them in the long run...good chips for good price - TheThirdLevel, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Yeah I guess they do have a high price, but if you look at most tests, they offer significantly better raw performance.
Both have their strong points, and Intel's retail chips have their high price because of theirs. - str3ama, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2How's the performance, I already noticed the price decrease last month - Intel is like almost double the price. An AMD high end machine was selling for like $700 (quad core, 8 ddr, 2.66ghz) while the Intel one that was actually less about 4ddr, 2.33ghz was twice the price at around $1400 - same video card and generally same specs.
I was wondering - there must be something slower or off with AMD since it's selling for considerably less, but my experiences with AMD Durhon were pretty good. Is there actually significant difference, or is it just a name-brand type thing with Intel? - byronm, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2The compelling reason for me to upgrade to Phenom 2 is because for 200 bucks i can get 3ghz quad core 45 nm on my existing am2+ motherboard.
- TheThirdLevel, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Did you not understand what I said? What part of "budget" matches with the high end processors you are talking about.
C2Q and i7 > Phenom. No *****, sherlock. - xenuxenuts, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Opteron cpus support dual or quad socket cpus because of the extra hypertransport channels (which require a larger, more expensive socket & packaging). Yes, they are the same core as a phenom (or athlon64 before), but AMD makes more money on the server cpus.
