- glucoseboy, on 08/04/2008, -0/+60Formosa????, Jeez, what textbook is the author using? It's called Taiwan.
- PeterNorton, on 08/04/2008, -3/+58As long as they can compete with Intel again, I don't care about the 40 nm.
- MarkusX, on 08/04/2008, -2/+45It's going to be interesting how AMD will be able to stand against Intel with the new chips.
- matthewf01, on 08/04/2008, -0/+35Worst analogy ever.
- dagnome1984, on 08/04/2008, -0/+26This will be a huge success with the budget P.C market.
- Linkin4, on 08/04/2008, -0/+24wtf
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -1/+21the same day that intel's future chipset details are "leaked"...
O RLY?!?!?! - digggggggggg, on 08/04/2008, -1/+19Maybe he was aiming to please his communist masters.
- 1Bad, on 08/04/2008, -1/+19Yes, Intel seems to have a fairly flexible architecture in the works. With the first Nehalem CPUs release date moved up, I fear that AMD will still be behind Intel for a few years. Seems their current plan is to target the mid and low range price point though, so being behind the curve on the highest performance parts might not be as detrimental. However, the biggest concern with that strategy is that many people grade a companies entire line-up based on the quality of the highest end parts.
- krische, on 08/04/2008, -0/+15This is geared to the budget PC and notebook area. Also known as the majority of the market.
- zephyr42, on 08/04/2008, -3/+17You don't care about the need for drastically less cooling and power requirements?
Strange... because I'm pretty sure both of those things are vitally important to think about when designing a chip or building a PC or server (don't forget that AMD's chips are all still 65nm ) - kengineer, on 08/04/2008, -1/+14I see the word "leaked" used so much that I don't think it means what people think it means.
- Fun4Two, on 08/04/2008, -0/+13Don't go there Comrade.
- ErickStevenson, on 08/04/2008, -1/+13Yah bring on the competition, so consumers can benefit...
- Chalks777, on 08/04/2008, -1/+13It's a vegetable, right?
- Kishoba, on 08/04/2008, -0/+11I am really excited for the fusion generation of chips. This should be a very competitive processor in the notebook arena once AMD finally releases. Also, I'm excited to see the first generation heterogeneous CMP processors. It is my hope that this may give way to much more complex chips that can feature a wide array of architectures. In terms of computer architecture, especially with the necessity of parallelism and multiple cores, this may be a sign of the future for the CPU as we currently know it.
- Blandyman, on 08/04/2008, -0/+11How about, if AMD were a CPU manufacturer, you'd call them AMD.
Or, if they were a prostitute, you'd call them your mother (oohs and ohhs commence) - lordtyros, on 08/04/2008, -0/+9Good luck. I'm happy as long as prices stay low.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 08/04/2008, -0/+9Yeah I thought 14 was the perfect chance to jump in too.....a 10 dollar a share loss kind of stings.
- digger28, on 08/04/2008, -1/+9What Fab will this be made in? The reason I ask is because AMD is supposed to build a new Fab in NY state but there are rumors they might go Fab-less.
- scrtyfrk, on 08/04/2008, -0/+8The same one that McCain was using to identify Czechoslovakia.
- renegadeafk, on 08/04/2008, -0/+8These are for budget pc's... I think this will be a success in the uber low price pc market from the looks of it.
- zinc6471, on 08/04/2008, -2/+10stock price is at $4 a share right now, prefect time to jump on if you haven't already.
there is no way AMD will just fallout, they'll either bounce back and start producing high end components or take hold of the lower end of computers. - leebo, on 08/04/2008, -0/+7Isn't it TSMC?
- Orderless, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6For starters, the average PC buyer does not want or need a powerful, discrete GPU. A sizable portion of gamers still run 6600GTs and 9800Pros. The high end market is overrepresented on sites like Digg because they're mostly frequented by the tech-savvy. If this technology pans out, it'll make for good low-middle end PCs with the ability to play some games. I think that the implication for laptops is huge if they can manage to eek any amount of power from these chips.
To sum it up, the general public's requirements are different from yours and you can't expect manufacturers to drop their largest customer base because you think that everybody should be able to play Crysis. - fuzzynyanko, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6Hybrid crossfire and physics on a GPU
- zephyr42, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6At the moment they're with IBM in Germany I believe until a new facility is built for their 40 and 32 nm chips.
EDIT: This is from some time ago but the IBM partnership still stands. http://www.amd.com/us-en/0,,3715_15503,00.html?red ... - inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5The Q6600 has the best price/performance ratio available today and its great to OC (2.4 to 3.6 with air cooling is easy), but I would replace the 8800GT for the HD4850, it's fairly as cheap as the 8800GT and it delivers 9800GTX performance. And this would make any system powerful enough to run most games with eye candy.
- OJXs, on 08/04/2008, -4/+9Larrabee looks a lot more impressive on paper
But I hope AMD manages to make something great, the company is sinking, even with the success of the 4xxx series. We need AMD to compete with Intel and Nvidia so that we can have better prices. - jonhinson, on 06/15/2009, -0/+5Good time to buy some options.
- miitch, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5AMD will make a comeback, just give it time
- LordPhilMil, on 08/04/2008, -2/+6I will be happy when they announce that Multi socket mobo's support this. I think running 4 of those will be able to run and blend Crysis at the same time!
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4But will it blend Crysis?
- Forma, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4An old one.
- sharkus414, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3It should be good for a power perspective because there will only need to be one fan/heatsink combo. Because of this, maybe they will be able to squeeze out some more performance. Either way it will probably be better performance than intel mobile graphics
- dafragsta, on 08/04/2008, -1/+4Really? How'd they stack up performance wise? I can build you a Cyrix 6x86 box for far less than that too, but you wouldn't want it because it was ***** 10 years ago. I've bought AMD every time they've had the lead on the CPU front. They don't have that lead anymore. I'll be getting a Q9450 soon.
- TacticalPenguin, on 08/04/2008, -1/+4Well no *****, but would they come close to an 8800GT and 2.4ghz core 2 quad that easily overclocks to 3.0ghz?
80 for mobo, 70 for case+PSU, 40 for RAM, 195 for CPU, 135 for GPU, 55 for HDD, 30 for DVD
That's 595 for a complete box with all the crap you need. - aznpwnzor, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3yah this looks like something to do with taiwan-based asus's future in eeepcs
anyway i like my big desktops with raw power - fuzzynyanko, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3I bet that partnership will be how the 360's Vahalla is possible
- JoshDaFink, on 08/04/2008, -2/+5I think you meant... "but will it run crysis?"
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3They call it taiwan too, or whatever the chinese equivalent of taiwan is.
- ancientworldnow, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3Always glad to see more competition in the chip industry. Now if only Via would make some more powerful chipsets...
- mikedoth, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2I always wondered why they didn't do this in the past.
- mikedoth, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3The only thing we build are overpriced trucks that no one can afford to drive thanks to the price of fuel.
- stresslife, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Actually, island of Formosa is birthplace of Taiwanese nation. When it comes to TSMC, take a look at complex relationship between Formosa Plastics, TSMC and VIA Technology ;)
- fuzzynyanko, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3Though you should be able to hybrid crossfire this with another ATI GPU
- TacticalPenguin, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2I don't doubt its performance, but the cheapest one on newegg is 190 vs an EVGA 8800GT for 130 shipped or 135 shipped and you dont have to overclock it yourself
- cubicledrone, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2You win the thread.
- pathouston22, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3And what AMD processor is cheaper and faster than the Q6600?
- scrtyfrk, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1I think it would be correct... The island of Taiwan is also known as island of Formosa is some circles. Then again, calling it that could be considered westernized and not what the native peoples call it.
