Actually, competition FTW... when companies compete, it's the consumers that win :) - Drizzt81, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52Come on AMD, hurry up with that stuff :D
- BrainRecall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32@SVPirate
So, by your logic, this system is the most efficient of all!
http://www.envador.com/cases/PVCII/OpenedUp2.JPG - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Actually I think the Digg community is pretty happy with the stuff that Intel's put out, but Intel will have no motivation to continue producing great processors at such a low price if AMD goes under, which they seem to be on their way to doing. Hence, many of us want AMD to go back on top for a while to keep the competition alive. That and the fact that AMD re-taking the lead means offering something even better than Core 2s, which is obviously good for us.

Barcelona is a server part that will use registered DIMMs, Agena FX uses non-registered (desktop) memories. These are very much desktop CPUs.
- xspinkickx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I can't wait to see how well these perform..... and if the performance is better then a quad core2duo then I am going with an 8 core setup next build.
- frgmstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Re-upped larger resolution pictures so you can see better now. :)
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18You do know AMD owns ATI now, right?
- diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I suppose the LEDs make it faster?!
- rotarychainsaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Oh man, I'm souped for this. I hope it's as fast as they say.
- CRasH180, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That was exactly what I thought when looking at these pictures. I love AMD, but I do not want to have to keep my computer in the refrigerator in order for it to run.
- Jumangi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7AMD needs to get moving really fast on their next generation stuff. They can't survive long having to continually slash prices on their chip lines to stay competitive.
- Chandon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They're on all the major benchmark sites, circa late next month.
- danknerd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11w00t AMD!
- AceGoober, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks to be quite promising...
- frgmstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6AMD is a bit different from what Intel projects to be the only fab path. AMD is building 45nm currently, in their current production facilities.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Competition FTW, yes. AMD FTW, no.
I prefer AMD over Intel, but right here, right now, if I had to build a machine, I'd go Core Duo.
(It would be my first Intel ever, too...) - Natfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"AMD plans to start taking orders for its Phenom FX and Phenom X4 processors in Q3’2007"
from http://www.dailytech.com/Final+AMD+Stars+Models+Unveiled+/article7157.htm dated May 4th
They will technically be 'out' in Q3 but probably won't reach mass availability till Q4 '07 though. - Winters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So, ummmmm..... these will fit the AM2 socket right? Right? Right?
- alexace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7That's exactly what Intel said about P4. AMD went on to dominate. These cycles have always been occurring in the CPU wars. Nothing new here.
- johanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Monterrey is in Mexico, Monterey is in California. I wonder if they know where Barcelona is.
- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@SVPirate
The Mac Pros also have a liquid cooling system, ass. I know because I pull the god damn things apart every day. Yeah it's "only" 4 fans, but there is an entire Liquid Cooling System involved. - lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just think. One Friday you'll open up the Fry's newspaper ad and see these processors bundled with ECS mb's for roughly $169.
Competition, FTW. - earthforce1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow, look at all those fans!
- frgmstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry, Digg spell check changed it. :
- cozinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@scabbers
True - I was just passing along the meaning of the acronym since I hadn't heard it myself until I googled it... - superdupergc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6just wait a bit longer, barcelona will be out soon enough.
native quad core > multi-chip-module quad core. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3from the link
"Rumors that DAAMIT will make fully integrated computers not compatible with third party hardware brought threats of litigation from Apple for patent infringement." - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I miss the days when only 1 fan was necessary, the PSU Fan
the good old 486s, P1s, P2s and some P3s and a few Celeries here and there - zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ hater2win:
Wrong. The Mac Pros do not have any liquid cooling as of yet. The older Power Mac G5s (near identical case) did require liquid cooling though. - locnguyen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's the ETA for these chips? I was about to build a C2D machine but I'm in no rush. I can wait till the end of the year.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@earthforce1 (#6612490)
They're aiming this at the enthusiast market, it's probably for style rather than necessity.
Four fans you see, for a 4x4 - wkfordjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Monterey, CA is spelled with one "R"
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ coz
What I mean is, he hasn't got a lot of choice but to switch from intel/ati! - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok, so where are the benchmarks for the Phenom processors?
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually it's Phenom FX
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Phenom :) - Chandon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's looking like the 4-slot server processors are coming out next month, and the two-slot server/enthusiast (Quad FX) processors are coming out in July. For single-slot processors, we have to wait until August or September.
- rockdawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome, I'm dreaming of a gaming monster PC..
- kemche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know about that. Just like IMC > North Bridge. But Core 2 proves that wrong. Just because the tag line says something doesn't mean it's true.
KG - SVPirate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@brainrecall
Provided it's silent (which the Mac Pro is) then yeh. :oP
@hater2win
Excuse me *ASS* I think you'll find they use perfectly standard tall Intel Xeon Heatpiped heatsinks, same as Dell *ACTUALLY*. As the person above pointed out the G5s used liquid cooling, but that was because G5s almost go thermonuclear when you stress them, the Mac Pro DOES NOT, I mean the CPUs barely get above 40C - why would we need so much cooling? - Cherubim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2K10 desktop CPUs won't be out till early next year. Nothing to get worked up about yet.
- wTheOnew, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8dual quad-core processor and a HD2900XT sitting in the same case, 4GB of memory too, wow. I've always been Intel/ATI, might have to siwtch over to DAAMIT because of this...
- bil4l, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Gotta love competition....unlike the NFL games being produced exclusively by EA. Madden was ***** enough before they didn't have someone breathing down their necks.
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love it AMD, hurry it up and I will get a new PC with your new CPUs just from the allure of your new products.
- sinatosk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2when the article says true 4x4... does thats means when they advertise 4200+... thats means each core is 4200+ or does still mean 1050+ for each core? ( 4200 / 4 = 1050 ) :p
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12 4-core processors? My math tells me that's 8-cores. Why don't they just come out with a simple 4-core first.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3weird paradox?
(s)he is now an Intel/AMD (wo)man...
hehe DAAMiT - lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it's still exciting....
with all the c2d rave, i was starting to get a little worried that amd may be promising vaporware. This is enough evidence that it's close. - frgmstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"4x4" refers to what AMD's true vision of the dual processor platform truly was, and that is 2 4-core processors on the same desktop board. More of a play on words there rather than any math being applied. :) But yes, it is somewhat confusing. They actually pulled away from that name fully in an official capacity.
