- AZRoboto, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2410. Don't get Dugg
- s0m31john, on 03/29/2009, -1/+2010. Don't get Go Daddy.
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -0/+15I talked to a girl, once.
- cadmiumpaint, on 03/29/2009, -0/+14The best relationship with your hosting provider is when you never have to talk to them because everything is working fine.
- jggube, on 03/29/2009, -0/+9What's hard about finding web hosting is that most of the places that have hosting reviews have a hidden agenda: they're paid by hosting companies to write good reviews and contain bad reviews to those that don't want to sponsor them. It's a shady business, and they will tell you all you want to hear to get you to sign on. Unfortunately, the only real way to settle on a web host is to switch until you find one that's good (I had to switch 4 times last year alone).
- MtheoryX, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8That wasn't a girl.
- magus824, on 03/29/2009, -1/+9You think your left hand is a girl?
- sp89, on 03/29/2009, -0/+7How about DreamHost? Is it any good?
- shitton, on 03/29/2009, -0/+6I read this as "9 steps to a happy relationship." Then I realized I was on digg. N/A
- WilliamAdama, on 03/29/2009, -0/+5Not anymore... they were good for a few years but now they've outgrown themselves and so the tech support are unsympathetic robotic dumbasses. I've purchased web hosting with them for about 5 or 6 years and recently I canceled due to an increasingly poor service record on their part... it used to be that I knew the support on a first name basis and the same ppl doing tickets also picked up the phone, but not anymore.
They basically expect you to check their forums every day to look for scheduled maintenance and downtime because apparently sending an email is too hard. Also their billing system sometimes doesn't send invoices. I was reliant on receiving the invoice via email and then I would go and pay as soon as I received the email... apparently their automated email system isn't so automated anymore and when I told them about this the support had a hard time understanding wth I was talking about. I had to learn the hard way that they weren't sending invoices by email anymore when I went to my website one day only to find it was suspended.
I also asked for SSH access on my reseller and they said they couldn't do it without a $10 fee... pretty expensive for something that should be enabled by default.
And finally when I went to cancel I couldn't do it through the billing system like almost every other web hosting company. I had to fill out a separate form that declared I would cancel the hosting immediately and that I agreed to have my hosting wiped as soon as I submitted the form without refund. I was shocked because every other host offers a "cancel at the end of billing cycle" option but I guess host gator thinks they're too good for that? They told me to wait until the end of the month but then what? I get billed for another month?
HostGator isn't that great and there are better hosts out there, the best thing to do is purchase a VPS because they are cheap and give you 1000x more control. - dreamache, on 03/29/2009, -0/+5I've been with the same hosting company for over 6 years. What has made me stay with them for this long is the fact that every time I've ever had an issue / question / request and visited their site (regardless of what hour / day it was) they've always been available instantly via live chat.
Customer support is what it's all about. - Tarnum, on 03/29/2009, -0/+4But, but... they promised "unlimited bandwidth" !
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -2/+6i dont get the point of people using tinyurl when the original link is actually shorter than the tinyurl-generated link.
- tbranham, on 03/29/2009, -0/+4Site 5 has always provided me with outstanding service -- except for the last RoR update -- that was a bit of a headache. Not too bad overall.

"One reason for having a website is to one day become popular and make it to the Digg front page (okay, we dream)."
Looks like today's your lucky day. - Daniel591992, on 03/29/2009, -0/+3I don't know about him, but I use A2Hosting and they have great support.

- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -0/+3what's with godaddy and their high-pressure sales tactics.
Bob Parsons needs to lose the earring. - chrisbasham, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2I've used Dreamhost for over a year and I've been pretty satisfied. I haven't noticed much downtime on my sites, though if you look at Dreamhosts support sites (<a class="user" href="http://twitter.com/dhstatus" rel="nofollow">http://twitter.com/dhstatus</a>, <a class="user" href="http://twitter.com/DreamHost" rel="nofollow">http://twitter.com/DreamHost</a>), their severs do seem to go down semi-frequently. But remember, they are actively communicating with their community, so it's not like they leave their customers in the dark. Any outages are resolved swiftly. Also, the preference panel (<a class="user" href="https://panel.dreamhost.com/" rel="nofollow">https://panel.dreamhost.com/</a>) is absolutely fantastic and provides plenty of functionality, meaning you'll barely if ever have to use terminal. So much better than CPanel.
I also looked into MediaTemple, and the reason I didn't go with them is because of their grid server system. I don't know if this is still a problem, but I heard from a friend who looked into it more (<a class="user" href="https://twitter.com/dszp" rel="nofollow">https://twitter.com/dszp</a>) that it is not ideal for sites not expecting a tremendous amount of traffic. In order to better handle extreme traffic situations (e.g. the digg or slashdot effect), they prioritize hits according to frequency. If a site is hit often, it will respond faster. However, in my case, since I don't have high traffic, that results in longer response times for the few users who do browse the sites.
[Drops two cents.] Good luck. - sphykik, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2I've been using DreamHost for about 3 years. Other than the big billing mistake they had last year, I haven't had any real problems. Their integrated apps are great, their support is pretty good, and there isn't much downtime to speak of.
- domfosnz, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2Exactly.
- bigpun, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2I've used UKFast for the last few years - by far not the cheapest of providers but their support is always generally very good and it's 24/7. Be nice to hear what others use for large scale websites
- dkmccue, on 03/29/2009, -0/+21&1 has been my provider for almost 6 years now. I have only had to contact them twice in all that time, and both times it was because of something I did to screw things up, not them. And both of those times, I called and spoke with someone who actually spoke clear English (not fractured or heavily accented) and they answered the call really quick (no more than a minute on hold).
So, to be happy with your provider in one step, go to 1and1.com! - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2WoW! That was simply amazing...
My Best Wishes to you in what you do. - nextekcarl, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2"We should mention at this point that the remaining points, numbers 8 to 10, come from interviews we conducted with representatives of Web hosting providers. While these points may seem a bit tired, they were at the top of their list of problems. Please read through and keep these points in mind."
What do they mean "numbers 8 to 10"? They should proof read their post a bit better, since the title is "9 steps..." and there are indeed, only 9 steps. - 1digga, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2what about www.driphost.com anyone use them?
- user24, on 03/29/2009, -2/+4@mrm3x1can:
ah but if you look at: http://preview.tinyurl.com/c4a3na

;0) - MtheoryX, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2Site5 for shared hosting, Slicehost for virtual dedicated.
- MasterQ, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1I switched to HostGator after trying a few companies and I couldn't be happier with them. If you need the control of a VPS they may not be for you, but if you're looking for a solid shared-hosting company I'd give them a try.
- user24, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1oh man, I *hate* 1and1, ever tried to transfer a domain away from them? Don't know what the hosting is like though to be fair.
- Noctem, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1Same here - Been with Dreamhost for around 3 years now, and incredibly happy. (Same, as in, great customer service, not necessarily same host)
- nextekcarl, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1Were you there for the massive billing problem they had a few years ago? That was quite a pain in the ass. Billing people for a year in advance the first time by accidentally running a script with the wrong date could be forgiven (perhaps) once, but then doing the exact same thing 15 minutes later cannot.
- eldridgea, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1I love them.
The panel is great and everything is fairly easy to use.
Their customer service is *awesome.*
Also, they have "one click" installs, so you can easily install things such as Wordpress, Drupal, Zencart, and others.
Also, they (if you want) auto configure your domain for Google Apps. - Noctem, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I got hit by that. Sucked at the time, but it's not like the money wasn't refunded. And hopefully that guy was fired :)
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1godaddy suck
- misreto, on 03/29/2009, -3/+3Any people hosting with Hostgator?
- sigit18, on 06/18/2009, -0/+0nice very easy..but
you look http://relationshipadvice.cn/ - henbenley, on 03/29/2009, -1/+1and what company might that be?
thanks! - inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+0yep, that's a good one!
- MasterQ, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1unlimited bandwidth is an illusion
- skeptictank, on 03/29/2009, -0/+0I don't know how good 1 &1 is but I have dropped a couple of magazine subscriptions because I got fed up with 6 page 1 & 1 ads.
- snafflepaffle, on 03/29/2009, -2/+1Try http://www.hostjury.com
They seem to have good reviews from actual customers. I've written a couple myself. - user24, on 03/29/2009, -4/+2I've been on DH for a few months with some low traffic sites (~50 visits per day) and I'm now sufficiently happy with them to move my main site (~900 visits per day) over. Speed wise they've been fine. The few minor issues I've had they've cleared up very quickly and apologised over.
If you're looking to sign up, I have a promo code that's good for 50% extra disk space: DHDISK
or you can be nice and sign up via my referral link: http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?492537 - vanadium77, on 03/29/2009, -4/+2They're pretty decent; pretty much par for a shared hosting provider: http://tinyurl.com/c4a3na
- user24, on 03/30/2009, -3/+1haha, I wonder who dugg me down? lol. never mind vanadium77, we'll both get some referals one way or another ;0)
