- jer.williams, on 05/05/2009, -3/+26Yeah, the 80s weren't influential to the modern era at all. Besides, who could possibly remember anything pre-1994?
- cosmicr, on 05/06/2009, -2/+25what an ordinary list. what about the 80386dx? math co-processor was a big deal. forget sound blaster live, what about the SB16? or the GUS? What about 3dfx and rendition verite? or the 6600gt? usb, bluetooth, wireless networking? a lot of the components listed were hardly important. wow, a silver case, thats important, they were more trend chaning.
- L0NER, on 05/07/2009, -0/+13Voodoo3 3500 TV AGP
the graphics card that smoked mechwarrior two and had a built in tv tuner - inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+13I remember getting my first 300baud modem... and thinking, WOW.. someday this technology will revolutionize computers. My parents couldn't understand what in the world I needed to hook up my computer to the telephone line for.
- Smaulz, on 05/07/2009, -1/+11Jeez, I owned probably 80% of this crap. What a fortune I've wasted.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -1/+11What is this? Seems like a list of random computer parts from the last 2 decades. Meh.
- cannarymburns, on 05/06/2009, -3/+12680i? i'm still trying to purge that atrocious chipset from memory. a zalman cpu cooler? overpriced hunk of junk with alternatives like tuniq tower and true 120. and that aquagate was a complete joke compared to self assembled loops, and even in '05 i doubt it was much better if at all than the high end aircoolers of the time.
- EvanGH, on 05/07/2009, -3/+11when a mannnnn loves a modddemmmmm
- mattus, on 05/07/2009, -1/+8What, no XP2500? No BH-5 RAM? No Geforce4 Ti4200? That was the gear that I and a 'generation' of overclockers cut our teeth on.
- Tubal22, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7i don't think they were in order of least important to most important.
it was oldest to newest. - lordmike, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7The AdLib sound card was the first, remember? It was a HUGE deal at the time!
- havocjaw, on 05/07/2009, -0/+6A little off topic, but the greatest milestone was the move from CGA/EGA graphics to VGA and later SVGA.
- Leathersoup, on 05/07/2009, -0/+6It's almost as though the author looked at a pile of stuff he's pulled out of his computers though the years and decided to write an article on it. :)

- antdude, on 05/07/2009, -0/+41 print page: http://www.maximumpc.com/print/6199
- IUAndar, on 05/07/2009, -1/+5I still remember the first MaximumPC magazine I ever picked up. They were previewing Windows 2000 I believe and had a case roundup. I was just getting it to have something to read on a flight with my family (I was in 8th grade at the time). I mark that as the day I went from being casually being interested in computers to being an enthusiast. I probably would have never built my own system or know as much as I do if it wasn't for that magazine.
It's actually kind of funny how something so small as a magazine in an airport can alter your life in such a big way. - Ouze, on 05/07/2009, -1/+4They left off the ATI 3D rage MAXX, which was I do believe the first graphics card to have 2 GPU's on the same board.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI_Rage
Also, what happened to 3DFX? - NiftyG, on 05/07/2009, -0/+3Surprised as to how many of these I've owned. And yes, don't forget the 80's. The Hayes modem should have been on the list.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+3Wifi
- Dougman82, on 05/07/2009, -0/+3What about the GeForce line introducing hardware accelerated transform and lighting effects? That was HUGE at the time.
- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 05/07/2009, -3/+5My god, that list Sucked. Yes, I put a capital S. That is how I feel.
- SuperHyperKid, on 05/07/2009, -2/+4This list was halfway decent, I owned almost everything on it up until the i7 stuff...
BUTT
Why no PhysX? Why no GeForce 4 Ti? Why nothing pre 90s? I think some of the stuff on that list was rather unimportant. - proliance, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Same here. I'm trying to remember why I need some of this stuff so bad.
- Nintendesert, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2PhysX? Really.
- kd420, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2I agree, especially because they included a chipset fan on the list. No offense to fan makers but it certainly isn't on par with processors etc.
- zmigliozzi, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1Pentium 90, my family had one when it came out, my dad came home with a system with that cpu, $2500.
- terrya64, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1I have had 15 of the items on that list. I still use my 3com network adapter and the soundbalster live in one of my spare computers. The Microsoft explorer mouse is sitting on my desk right now. Been building my own systems since 1996. Surprised thet didn't list the Hercules Dynamite 128 video card. I remeber paying around $200.00 for that thing and another $200.00 for a 2gig hard drive.
- IUAndar, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1I'm not so sure about their chipset fan choice either. But I wouldn't leave cooling devices off the list entirely. I'm a little shocked that they didn't include something from Koolance (like their external water cooler systems, which made water much less scary for most enthusiasts).
- nmanguy, on 05/07/2009, -1/+2Oh, hehe.
- proliance, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1In 1998 when I was first installing cable modems for the cable company I ran into a guy who was had a 486. He couldn't upgrade because he was still paying off his $4000 loan.
- McBassMan, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1I loved my Geforce 4 Ti4200. I used it for 4 years, it two different box's with three different heat sinks, before I got something faster.
- trueinfinite, on 05/07/2009, -2/+3how many people here have owned almost every single one of those? i remember my first dx4-100mhz proc... *sigh* the good old days.
- Rethcir, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1Some good stuff on this list. Until maybe 2003 or 4, you just couldn't get a decent value, easily upgradable computer from an OEM, and could easily build a high-power machine for much cheaper. Still remember pouring over FiringSquad articles on how well different mobos would overclock, to try and pick the ultimate combination of parts.
- mrBitch, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1Did you RTFA? Voodoo2 is mentioned on the first page.
- Vivifyer, on 05/07/2009, -1/+2good ole celeraon 300a o/c @ 450mhz .. man what a beast that was back in the day
- themastersb, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1This article managed to hit pretty close to home for me. I just upgraded from my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe board earlier this year. That thing sure lasted longer than I would have thought.
- Zomgondo, on 05/07/2009, -1/+1Dugg for including just about every single piece of kit I bought from 1995-2002, including the absolutely terrible SD11 which I took great joy in breaking in half after I replaced it with an ASUS board. Thankfully it and the 500MHz Slot A Athlon I had were free samples from my company's AMD rep.
- Catch_ME, on 05/07/2009, -1/+1No Voodoo 2?
- cease, on 05/07/2009, -1/+1I'm surprised the ATI 3870 didn't make it on the list. It was priced ridiculously low at the time despite it's impressive performance, and ushered in a new wave of powerful yet inexpensive video cards.
- chadwick359, on 05/07/2009, -1/+1Dugg because I still use my Sound Blaster Live! 5.1D
- se7en11, on 05/07/2009, -1/+152: Mountain Dew
- itseffinkasey, on 05/07/2009, -1/+1I had that damn sony DRU drive and it broke so damn fast it sucked.
- CandyStyle, on 05/07/2009, -2/+2I listened to The Beatles while I read this to maximize the nostalgia (though not as old but twice as awesome)... It worked. As a computer tech it takes me back!
- NoozeHound, on 05/07/2009, -1/+1Kudos, nonetheless, for natzying your own grammar.
- Spire3660, on 05/07/2009, -0/+0Bought out by Nvidia after the Voodoo 5 failure in the marketplace.
- mjd420nova, on 05/07/2009, -0/+0One thing they left out that revolutionized the IBM PC was the SixPack card, a 384 KB memory expansion card, serial port for RS-232 and an onboard clock. Really brought the original IBM PC up to speed and gave IBM the idea for the next generatio AT machine.
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -1/+1Pretty cool list.
- FUR10N, on 05/07/2009, -2/+2pft, you'll never need more than 64k
- Nephersir7, on 05/07/2009, -1/+1I did not find the installation of my Zalman CNPS 9700 LED easy in any way (took me one hour to figure it out). But it does a great job
