- 1iProd, on 10/22/2007, -5/+735Should have used a microSD card, that would REALLY show how far we've come.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/24/2007, -13/+369Man, that's one giant 1GB card in that guys hand, hasn't MicroSD hit there yet?
- Lane, on 10/21/2007, -7/+251or up to 32gb in that same SD size.
- mf0thrilla, on 10/24/2007, -5/+234That iPod must have been a real bitch to jog with.
- ChronicFiles, on 10/10/2007, -5/+200Mirror at http://m3.bestpicever.com/piles/?s=1gb
- voogzy, on 10/10/2007, -31/+192truly amazing what it has come to ...
This hard drive was on display in the museum of computing, a part of a computer and modern communications festival we held in Murska Sobota, Slovenia.
more pictures and info here: http://www.frisk.si or http://www.sobotainfo.com/index.php?mode=gallery&g ... - theShiba, on 10/10/2007, -18/+168Did we really need a 2592x1944 picture to show us that? This is not going to survive digg...
- staticoranges, on 10/12/2007, -54/+175But will it Blend?
- pukiman, on 10/10/2007, -14/+10720 years, is not that "quick".
- Clearz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+92This is what to expect in 2027 in the way of storage media
http://www.johncleary.net/sd.jpg - Salzar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+90wow heaven forbid that others links may be interesting!
- aywwts4, on 10/18/2007, -3/+81For those who haven't seen a microsd card http://www.watermarkfactory.com/resources/terms/im ...
They are thin as a dime, light as possible, the max is 6gig at the moment but 8 gig sizes will be on the market shortly, and 1 gig costs about 12 dollars. - Subterfug, on 10/11/2007, -1/+66http://img2.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/d28995865 ...
For got the link eek! - samadam, on 10/10/2007, -6/+62I think it is important to look at even smaller scales. Just about two years ago, well into the internet age, I bought a generic 512 MB usb stick for about $30. I figured it was a fair price. Now I can get a higher quality one with twice the capacity for a third the price. That's in just 2 years. I know flash memory has plummeted in price, but it just goes to show how quickly we are moving forward.
- MrMysterious, on 10/23/2007, -9/+64This server running on a 20 year old Apple IIe?
- Subterfug, on 10/10/2007, -2/+55I edited it to show how 1GB will look in the future.
- airwalkery2k, on 10/10/2007, -5/+57Plus, consider the price difference. I'm sure that big hunk o' junk probably cost a couple million back in its day. Whereas that little card can be bought for $10 from Wal-mart.
- donmanguno, on 10/10/2007, -3/+53that statement alone is indicative of how quickly technology advances in our day.
- univerio, on 10/15/2007, -0/+5020 years from now, some guy's gonna post it again, "[BREAKING] the 2007 prediction of 1GB lol!!! [PIC]", "title says it all."
- L4WL3RS34L, on 10/10/2007, -17/+65Ha, he's getting dugg down on his own story.
- scooter12, on 10/18/2007, -4/+51Ladies Man.
- shadowblade989, on 10/10/2007, -1/+48I've seen the regular microSD cards, but where did you find these floating ones?
- ryodoan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+44but then his links would not be clickable.
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -12/+56Yet we still can't keep a page from crashing...
- DolphinGL, on 10/10/2007, -12/+53That SD card is pretty big. I have a 1GB microSD that's a fraction of that size.
- Yazoo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+42I think i could've written 1gb worth of binary in a smaller area than on that old thing.
- bobartig, on 10/10/2007, -3/+38They should have gotten a 4 GB MicroSD card, then painted 1/4 of it yellow with an arrow pointing to it saying "1GB somewhere in here".
Seriously, using a standards SD card? That thing's a boat! All my flash drives are like stick of trident gum now, and my flash cards are MicroSD =P - Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34Doubt it - I've actually done the math on the first hard drive made (the size of a washing machine with 5MB capacity), and it came out to about a third of a square millimeter per bit.
- voogzy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30in truth... at first i forgot to add the links so I added them as comments... why do people even trouble them selfs with such details and why does it even matter?
- portis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30She's holding an outdated SD card. She should instead be holding a MicroSD card.
- FenrisUlf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30True, microSD is about the size of your pinky nail.
- iofthestorm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+32I think microSD has hit 4GB already, if not 8.
- voogzy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29I would have but at the time the only thing at hand was the one on the picture...
and the picture wasn't taken to be put on digg. we just taught it would be interesting to see.
i see no point in using a 2,4gb or any other capacity card for comparison. the point was 1gb vs 1gb.
and yes it is too bad i didn't have a 1GB microSD at hand... - Tivor, on 10/21/2007, -9/+36The guy needs to cut his fingernails.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26There's this little thing called cost to consider.
- retral, on 10/14/2007, -4/+29You fail at funny.
- Doomsan, on 10/10/2007, -6/+30size matters...
- whatson, on 10/10/2007, -9/+32Because of DIGG Effect the whole Slovenian (.si) internet is going down! :)
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -3/+26And, yep, its down. Pity the server didn't have 1Gb of bandwidth.
- one1plus1one, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23For those of you wondering about TYYWEBB's comment, the "Singularity" refers to a theory advocated by Dr. Ray Kurzweil, in which technology is growing at an exponential rate.
For example, if you took someone from the year 1700 and transported them to the year 1799 they wouldn't notice much difference.
If you take someone from the year 1800 and transport them to the year 1899 they might be slightly amazed.
If you take someone from 1900 and drop them in time's square, they would be shocked and astonished, and feel as if they were on an alien planet.
The same effect will occur when taking someone from the year 2000 and dropping them into the year 2050 -- they will perceive an "alien planet" and not recognize the new technology. Sometime around 2050 technological growth will begin to spike towards "infinity". (So the theory of the "singularity" goes, which I personally believe, but it is controversial.) - Jereso, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26That beast would crush the blender.
- scaife7, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23I wish comments like this would blend...
- JSchwage, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Pages don't crash. Servers do.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Because my parents hate me and I need to take my frustration out on a person I don't know!
/sarcasm - Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18It's one thing to pop up a picture of a super computer and say "This is 64 kb 30 years ago" but it's pretty amazing to have someone hold up the tiny example of engineering against what it was like 20 years ago.
- hilo4321, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17you realistically cant use a whole gig
- uidzero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17When USB drives first came out I bought a Sony USB vault memory stick. I guess it was like early 2000's (2002 or 2003 I think). It was 128MB and I got it ON SALE for $299. :-/
- Ranneko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16The Spanish Inquisition?
- tyywebb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Long live the singularity!
