- raz3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Nothing new here. It'll all common sense. What really interests me is info about how to prolong the life of the lithium-ion battery. There's a particularly good article on that here:

Take your battery in to batteryrefill.com. You send them your battery and they send back the same battery but with new cells inside. It was cheaper than a new battery. It worked for me on an old laptop with only 10 minutes of charge. - b3tamike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually... you still can:
"Laptop computers, cellular phones, iPods, and other portable electronic devices are still allowed on board an aircraft. These items must still be screened at the security checkpoint."

- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Turn of the screen when you don't need it!
That's my 1 simple tip which will save you hours! - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@orion: the exploding/fire starting batteries were manufactured by Sony.
- saralk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5how would you plan on going on the internet mid flights?
- esteban, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Not a problem for me, my government won't let me take a laptop into the cabin. I sit there safe in the knowledge that my laptop will be fully charged at the other end when the baggage handler has his way with it.
- shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dont forget apps like DVD Idle...
I used it on a trip to Japan non-stop from Wash.DC
14hour trip was able to watch LOTR 2 and 3 on 1 battery!
it was an extended 12 cell battery on my dell laptop... *no fire yet* - SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had been working on an article for my blog on improving the usage time of my Powerbook's battery but forgot to finish it. Anyway, with lots of different tricks, I was able to up the battery life to a good 5 hours if I'm not doing too much. I really should finish the article. There are lots of easy things you can do (especially on the Mac because in many ways it's pretty graphics-intensive sometimes) that will increase the time by 10 or 15 minutes. Those small changes add up after a while.
- spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8What's wrong with Ernest? I like him...
- elhaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This makes sense, as new iPod shuffles typicallly have about 12 hours of battery life, even with having to pump audio, whereas the mini's and others with hard drives suck the battery down. Moving parts take power to move. Go figure.
- Shoeler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Is it really that challenging? I recently flew from San Diego to Atlanta, GA on a single battery with my Dell. It's got a Core Duo, and with the brightness turned down, network off, etc it lasted the entire flight watching DVDs of MASH. :D

- Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If I am remembering correctly, the batteries in the Powerbook 5300 that had heat issues were also manufactured by Sony.
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just wish Microsoft would fix this bug that makes it impossible hibernate with > 1GB RAM in many situations.

What a battery waster for those of us with RAM. - SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -2/+411. Use Opera. Firefox uses too much CPU killing your battery.
- donbowmanca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+211. Kill all java virtual machines. Something in the JVM keeps a pentium M from dropping back in power. With the current meter this makes ~2A of difference for me on an ibm thinkpad t42. @ lowest power, idle, no JVM, it draws 0.79A. If 1 JVM is running it draws 2.80A.
JVM sneak up on you from a lot of angles, it can be auto-updaters, background tasks, all over. - jhmostyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favourite tip to save energy, building on from number 1, is when doing simple coding or word processing, to use your OS' universal access features to invert the screen, or just initiate any other higher-contrast visual setup (including the awesome Darkroom or equivilant) meaning you can ramp down the brightness of your display (and also help your eyes a little bit).
Such setups can also reduce access to or appearence of pictures and videos, meaning less youtube and more productivity. - pja7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One tip I heard a while back (though never tried) is to run your OS and 'essential' apps off a compact flash card with a PCMCIA reader (you can get on ebay for a few bucks). You can easily do this with Mac OS9 but for OSX you can do a custom install and leave off all the print drivers and Asian fonts to do an install of Panther at 1.5gb so a 4gb compact flash would be sufficent, leaving your hard drive for storage, orignal OS.apps.
No moving parts should mean better battery life and far less heat. All I need now is that 4GB compact flash card... - inactive, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1buy high quality laptop batteries is important for you.

- ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got a Compaq Presario the other day, and so far it seems pretty solid, and an excellent quality build too. Disagree with the OS comment though, pretty lame.
- MrObjectional, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I already do all of these and will add one more here-
11. Try ripping any movies you wanna watch before getting on the plane. Reading that copy of The Empire Strikes Back from your hard drive takes a lot less battery than spinning the DVD. - jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ernest movies kick ass

- JDaleS, on 11/01/2008, -0/+0It is common sense. Nothing new There's a good sites about laptop battery here:

or here
http://www.elbatteries.com/ - ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Site is suspended, and duggmirror is not updated.... what the duce?
- falstaff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2FTA: "I make a point of configuring my ‘flight mode’ prior to getting on the plane. It may only take 5-10 minutes to get your system setup properly, but that just eats into your battery life if you wait to do it on the plane."
Most any OS this side of Windows 3.1 has the ability to set up different profiles, so you can tweak your settings one time, then just log in to the Battery Saving profile each time you need it. That only takes 5-10 minutes one time, rather than 5-10 minutes every time you're on the road/in the air. - batteryfast, on 03/25/2008, -0/+0 The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.co.uk/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Agreed nothing new, but it's a good article for IT techies to send to their laptop users in the hope they'll read it.
Does the old 'drain the battery occasionally' rule still apply to more modern batteries? - elhaf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Uh, what's wrong with him is that he is dead. Other than that, he's perfectly fine.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yeah, seems to be the best way to maximize battery performance, leave it at home.
- seanhayward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like Linux as much as the next person, but unless your laptop has been around for a while the power management of DSL is not going to compete with the stuff laptop makers bundle with Windows XP.
