Ugly? What's ugly is acres of parking lots, gridlock, sprawl, oil dependance, pollution and the way you think. It's ridiculous that people buy buy into marketing and ascribe notions like sexiness and self-image into transportation machines. They are trying to do something innovative here but its too ugly for a prissy little bitch like you, so I guess they should scrap the whole thing. - cortlandjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I like it.
As for safety, it has got be safer than riding a motorcycle, at least you have a cage protecting you.
Its definitely not an interstate vehicle, local roads and city streets for sure.
its funny how quickly people dismiss new vehicle technology as useless because it doesn't look like a monster SUV or car that Detroit car makers have been pushing. If you haven't noticed the Big 3 are not doing to well, maybe if they were a little more innovative they wouldn't be losing Billions $ every quarter. - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Unless you're driving it like a jackass, its really going to be hard to flip a car that sways its suspension like that.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I was going to come into the comments to make the obligatory "dur, whut if a bigger car hits me?" comment, but I see you've already filled that role.
Honestly, Diggiots, you know there are going to be articles about small city transportation on here regularly. You know they're going to be small. You know they'll probably be kind of futuristic. If that bugs you so much, try reading about something ELSE. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"So...a 100mpg vehicle (where mpg equals miles per GALLON of GASOLINE) is better than an electric that can accomplish the same thing, in a much cleaner way?"
And how is a SINGLE vehicle that relies on coal for electricity and nickel mining and processing for batteries (which causes acid rain and complete decimation of the environment around the processing plants) any cleaner than a SINGLE high-mpg gasoline vehicle?
People keep forgetting that we don't get the vast majority of our electricity from clean sources NOW. What we truly need to do is come up with clean sources of electricity (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integral_Fast_Reactor ), make big strides in more efficient and environmentally friendly batteries...and THEN make a major push towards electric vehicles. Otherwise, we're just trading one form of pollution for another. - takamalak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I know. Next thing you know, some idiot will invent a 2 wheeled motorized bike. hah, imagine getting hit while driving something you have to balance on 2 wheels and weights a quarter of what a normal car weighs.
- takamalak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Someone should tell motorcycle riders they are at grave risk. Thanks man.
- Prefection, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wake up and smell the exhaust Diggers! I'm living in Germany and I can tell you that while this vehicle would look a little odd on the European roadways (or any roadway), it would not be the target for such silly vitriolic comments. Cars here are smaller across the board, and the ONLY trucks on the roads belong to Americans. When a major purchasing decsion centers on "WHEN will an SUV hit me?" perhaps your priorities are a little skewed.
In Germany you can go into the local supermarket (yes - where they sell the groceries) and purchase a 50cc moped for only a few hundred Euro. These things are all over the roads, and, despite their LOW speed, I have never seen one in an accident, (much less hit by an SUV). Quit wracking your brains for excuses to hate this little putt-putt, and start examining why you value what you value! Peace! - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Their slogan:
"Naro! It's probably safer than a motorcycle." - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I was unaware that countries with driving tests had no traffic accidents. Good to know!
- acdcfanbill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Is there some automaker requirement that all high mpg new concept cars must look as 'futuristicy' as possible? even when some of it clearly serves no aerodynamic purpose?
- Frostek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If it looked like a regular car, I doubt you'd get 100 mpg out of it anymore.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"This tiny car - designed for city use as a personal commuter, a taxi or a delivery vehicle"
Would make a cool golf cart too. - takamalak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thank god someone gets it. People ride motorcycles all the time and a single passenger unit like this has much more protection than this. It has 4 wheels, more stability, a roll cage, and seat belts so you are not flung 100 feet when getting hit by a larger vehicle.
- Frostek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Perhaps you could move to a country where they have driving tests?
- DeskFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"PWN3D!"
Buried. :) - Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Screw all that, imagine the clown car!
- RJGII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not to mention protection from the elements... How often are you going to hop ON the bike over getting IN the car if it's raining? I'll take one, give me a diesel so I can run it on vegetable oil.
- kabifff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome. Another concept car that we'll never see. I'll digg when I see it on the road.
- rlh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Germany must be more civilized in the way that they drive.
Here in the western US, the bigger the vehicle, the faster and more obnoxious they drive.
On the freeway, it's like slalom skiing for them.
As far as the complaints that it is not electric, one step at a time.
I love to have a good single person commuter car, if there weren't so many cowboys on the freeways. - Frostek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, here's your chance to go to the show and take lots of pictures for your fellow Digg users... :-)
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow! Did you graduate from 6th grade? Yeay for badd speling and not using spell-check.
- macamatition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool I live in Anaheim! :)

So...a 100mpg vehicle (where mpg equals miles per GALLON of GASOLINE) is better than an electric that can accomplish the same thing, in a much cleaner way? And how can a car-like vehicle that's just smaller help with parking lots and gridlock? The real problem is the system, not the vehicle that uses the system.
All I see here is a motorcycle with a super weak engine, 4 tires, and an ugly chassis. In the future, when you decide to bash commenters, you may want to consider your argument a little more carefully first. - MisterHay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Regarding the perennial comment, "What if you get hit by something bigger than you?" Even SUVs can get hit by semi-trucks or trains. You'll never be the biggest thing on the road.
- HairyPoter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2100 MPG car? forget it. It will never sell. Make a 1000 HP 1 MPG car and the industry will make you rich.
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not a CONCEPT car: 2009 Toyota Prius = 80+ actual MPG... Watch the other hybrid makers cry all night long. http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/new_cars/4212545.html
- HalFTW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^^Spam
- julian02392, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i would drive this...its amazing..100 mpg is way better then anything on the market and it is cars like these we need to lower our fuel consuption.
- mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1100km per gallon, not 100mi per gallon.
- black27696, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HELLO! It's CONCEPT CAR. When has a concept car ever come to market? Never! They always make a "concept" using all the newest technologies balled in to one, show what it can do, and then the production vehicles use different features of the concept. Take rear wheel automatic steering (denali trucks). That was on a concept car where the wheels turned a full 45 degrees so the whole thing could spin like a top! Did they build that in to the new trucks? No, they used part of that concept car to improve a different production model, that's what concept is all about. You'd never drive this specific vehicle on the highway, just bits and pieces of it would be in your new car.
- JDoggqx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The jerk spammers are back, once again proving their jerkiness. I shall now once again hunt down all of their comment spam on Digg and bury them before blocking (yet another) one of their user names.
Can't Digg just block any comment with their URL in it? They aren't that sophisticated. - mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People are in constant denial over the dangers of driving. I especially love the Hindenberg references every time hydrogen is mentioned, as if gasoline doesn't burn. Driving is risky, period. Obviously you want a safe car, but you also have to drive defensively. Think proactively. Give lots of clearance between you and other cars. Expect people to turn without signalling and go through red lights. Stay away from big-rigs. And don't constantly drive around. Try to make the most from your trips and you'll lower your gas consumption and reduce the probability of getting into an accident.
- HairyPoter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1make it a 4 wheel and I will buy it.
- finbec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately it is not open to the public.
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like an Aprilia 3 wheeler with a roof. Not that that is a bad thing. Aprilia bikes rock.
- Cert21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the article you linked to says the car gets 100 km per 3 liters of fuel.
That's 126 km per gallon, or 78 mpg.
Still pretty good... and goes to show that high-efficiency diesels should be getting at least as much attention as the less efficient but much hyped gas hybrids. - richba5tard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't understand what the fuss is about. The Audi A2 1.2 TDI diesel does 126mpg, and has been available since 2000. Even better, it isn't a freaky 4 wheel bike, but a normal car.
http://www.audiworld.com/news/99/a2_2/content.shtml - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ooof that's some ugly beast......
- dfeifer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would buy one of these. What I really wish, is that they would do something with motorcycles to be able to get that much fuel efficiency. My current and only transportation is a 2 year old Yamaha Vstar with 36k miles on it. I get roughly between 40-46mpg out of it depending on the quality of the gas i fill up with. It MAY be just be, but i swear the displayed fuel efficiency for vehicles has actually decreased and become worse over the years, and not better.
- arcele, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What happens when you drive one of these....
(NSFW, super graphic)
=> http://ehowa.com/features/smartcarvssemi.shtml - cayennenator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Amazing. sweet!
- ninjacob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not funny at all. I have a motorcycle and a 600hp car, so I do know how to drive, and I'm fully aware that OTHERS don't. So ***** off. Nobody is laughing at anybody being killed. Learn to read *****.
- alabamawanderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds interesting... Not for me, definitely.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Can it be less "Concept" and more "Practical". Do people ignore that Hummer's, SUV's and transport trucks exist when they design these cars? Maybe if everyone drove a car like this it would be safe, but lets put a little more metal and space between the driver and the grill of an 18 wheeler please, if my fuel economy dropped to only 60mpg because its a SAFE vehicle, I will still be very happy. Anybody can take a small gas engine with batteries, Lego's and Seran wrap and make a fuel efficient vehicle.
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Imagine trying to drive around in a snowstorm in one of those things. Ridiculous.
- dmadip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Autoblog must have digg operatives. He get a headlining story about every dam day. YEAY for free advertising
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1at least riding a bike requires you to know what your chances of injury are going into it, and you're wearing protection for most of your body if you're doing it right. i could see some guy in nothing but a suit getting creamed into, then trapped inside a nano-car.
- byogman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Show me a 100mpg car that can survive on the freeways and I'll buy it.
Honestly, how many Americans can get enough use out of car that isn't built for the freeway? - tehbeermang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0At the pioneer auto museum in Murdo, South Dakota, one can see a prototype Domino's Pizza delivery vehicle developed in the 1980s. It's uglier than this, looks like a cross between a go-kart and a DeLorean. It used wasted engine heat to keep the pizzas warm. I would imagine if it developed a fuel leak, the resulting vapor would make their death disks taste better, too.
