- primehifi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+59Dear Apple,
I am running out of iPod-less relatives to pawn every 'brand new but not the best iPod' I have off on for next to retail prices so that I may buy the 'really brand new this one is the best' iPod which you just released. Please slow down and let some of my said relatives procreate so that I may then pawn my useless iPods to their babies.
Signed,
Owner of soon to be obsolete 80gb iPod. - Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35Is it sad that my desktop only has 80GB?
- unleashedlive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36*drool*
but they'd need to increase the speed or it's just useless. - JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I'd just like to remind you that the Zune was based on a Toshiba MP3 player, so calling them "Apple's bitch" is a bit much. :P
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1820gb more is always good.
- glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Seems likely, and a wider screen hopefully :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Toshiba is pretty much Apple's bitch now, this will definitely happen (80 GB and 100 GB lineup with same current prices?)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16yes, especially when you can get a good 400 gig seagate hard drive for under a hundred bucks.
- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"Ever held one?"
I don't have to, I read the specs. The Zune is 4.4" * 2.4" * 0.58" (that's 6.12) cubic inches) and weighs 5.6oz. The iPod is 4.1" * 2.4" * 0.43" (that's 4.23 cubic inches) and weighs 4.8oz.
People sometimes think that the Zune is lighter since the iPod is more dense; the 30GB iPod is 1.13oz/cubic inch, the Zune is 0.92oz/cubic inch. Regardless, the Zune is clearly both larger and heavier. =) - unleashedlive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I highly doubt that. Announcing something like that would kill iPod sales for that month.
- bhavi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Correction: x gb more is always good
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11yah, there's barely point in speculating this one: 100GB 1.8" drive = 100GB iPod, just like when the anounced the 80GB 1.8", and then Apple came out with the 80GB iPod shortly after...
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ya god forbid you might have to face the humiliation of owning something last gen... I mean, I hear not even 3rd world kids would want an 80gig once the NEW 100gig is out.
/ I'm in the process of throwing mine out right now. - bolero421, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You use what you need. My desktop (sitting back at home being used by my brother, as it was to large to bring to my dorm) has had the same 80gb Western Digital in it for several years and I never needed anything larger.
Of course, now my laptop has a 120gb and I have an external 250gb that I use for media storage and backup purposes.
But as was already mentioned, 250gb HDDs are commonly to be had for under $100 these days. - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16lol@zune
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It is a good thing monks rediscovered modern music back in medieval times, obviously that was just an important step to pave the way for the ipod. And good thinking on the part of early primates for evolving opposing thumbs that can navigate the jog wheel, they were really thinking ahead.
What's that you say? Not everything revolves around the ipod? Nonsense! - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I see I'm buried, I must have angered the Zune fans with my irritating facts... The Zunes may be stuck at 30GB, but Microsoft plans to make 80GB models available next year, probably right after Apple puts these new 100GB drives in the larger iPods.
The 80GB iPod, to be fair, is thicker than the 30GB model - almost as thick as the Zune at 0.55", and almost as heavy at 5.5oz. Many early iPod vs Zune pages compared the 30GB Zune to the 80GB iPod ( http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/ipod-vs-zune-size-contest-204483.php ), so they had the impression that the Zune was only a little bit larger than the iPod, but in fact the 30GB Zune is 45% larger (in volume) than the 30GB iPod.

- sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Amazing feat my friend, when you hit puberty try a thing called porn, that will fill the space quickly.
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So...how long until I can buy one on eBay and stick it into my 4th-gen iPod? :D
- unleashedlive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4or right before, like how they lowered their prices a day before Microsoft released the Zune details ( - the price tag hehe)
- Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5bumping up capacity 20 gigs isn't quite the same as changing the whole architecture of how your machine runs. Any Mac with a PowerPC IS pretty much worthless now. A 80 gig iPod on the other hand, well if you dont want yours anymore i'll take it :)
- scojerroc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"the largest yet of this size"
i had to read that three times before i got it. - Botrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can! Buy a 1.8 drive: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ipod-Toshiba-MK4006GAH-40-GB-1-8-inch-Hard-drive-40GB_W0QQitemZ200053313222QQihZ010QQcategoryZ48680QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
And buy a USB case for it: http://cgi.ebay.com/1-8-USB2-0-Hard-Disk-Drive-CADDY-Enclosure-4-Hitachi_W0QQitemZ130053965522QQihZ003QQcategoryZ96894QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Always choose your style of case correctly.
I always have one of these on me, filled with a 2.5inch 80gig drive: http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-2-5-Hard-Disk-Drive-Case-Enclosure-w-Bag-j9_W0QQitemZ280056309700QQihZ018QQcategoryZ41911QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The beauty is that I have 80gigs connectable to any computer without needing an external power supply since it uses the USB power.
Now go 1.8inch and go in style. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4People burying Universal should consider the addition of Time Machine to Leopard (It's a backup system which requires a 2nd disk to work). Apple knows that many professionals use their notebook as a desktop, especially the 17" MacBook Pros! Don't write off the idea of a 2nd smaller, or 2 small disks in an Apple notebook. At least consider the idea, it's not far-fetched. Only having a backup while you're connected to an external disk is just too fragile of a backup solution for people with important, but mobile, data. Plus dual-disk notebooks are cool (and useful) in high-end notebooks these days.
[Also consider the rumoured 12" MBP, that could use a small disk as well and Apple already buys these from Toshiba for iPods.] - terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Source please?
- Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3so are you saying I can't tote a iPod with video around in my pocket?
I think if they can put a 80 gig hard drive in an iPod, they can forget the music player part and just give me the drive in an enclosure. - Naga10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3pants428, the 80gig iPod was released almost a year after the 80 gig drive was available... not that I'm not hoping for the 100gig iPod too
- spinningobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"aculey", i "thank" you might want to stop commenting on digg "tell" your spelling ability improves.
kthxbai - terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3100gb is still not big enough to hold all my collection, I need at least 120gb.
- AshFire87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Toshiba = main HD-DVD creator + Microsoft + Zune
Apple = Blu-Ray exclusive + iPod - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, I know that the 80gig drive was out for over a year before it was incorporated into an iPod... Not that I'm not hoping for a 100gig iPod.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why isn't this hard drive being used to build laptops? I would imagine it could help to shrink laptop size and weight significantly.

http://kokojie.blogspot.com/ - primehifi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@broomett: people never like you for who you are, otherwise we could all walk around naked..............
- DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3More likely to be in a Zune or Gigabeat as Toshiba makes both , and they will cut a deal with MSFT to undercut Apple just like Apple did with the flash made by Samsung ;)
- topato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great... someone that isnt me needs to calculate how much that would cost to fill with just music from itunes.
- piratepete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3what the hell? you're happy about your 4G iPod, but more happier about your Creative Zen?
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whether apple releases it or not, technically apt users will find it an easy task to ghost their existing drives onto this drive and swap it in.
- Trekkie711, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6More then likely the 100 gb Tosheiba drive will go in the Tosheiba made player - ZUNE
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You *can* use the iPod as an external drive (Enable "Disk Mode"). Either in the default (Windows) FAT32, which works on Windows, OS X and Linux, but has a 4GB limit, format the drive (and lose the MP3-player part of the device) as a different file system, or as the OS X default file system (Who's name always escapes me for some reason : Extended FS? Ah -), HFS+, which works on OS X, and somewhat on Linux, and on PC with something like MacDrive.
Thats largely what I use my 4 or 5(?) year old 40GB, black and white iPod for now (Since the headphone jack is on it's last legs)
- Ben - ChinezePanda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3at piratepete:
Gen 4 ipods were 20 Gig bro.... 20 gig man... Mini's... as Borat stated.... were for chicks
=) - mcemerritt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is great. I am up to 22753 apple lossless songs. My superdrive is still going strong. Now its time to get some space in the house and get rid of the thousands of CD's I have and get a few 100 gig ipods when they come out. In case you're curious so far it has taken 584 gigs of my 1 terabyte of space.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure eventually these will be in iPods... not right away, but I would guess over the next few years...
I would imagine your can put it in your iPod yourself :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1maybe there will be new features on the next one,
or else there would be no reasone to increas the HDD.
Games?HD video? - Grok22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually 4th Generation Ipods came in either 20G or 40G versions. i so happen to own a 40g.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1COST? wait people pay for music now? Man am I getting old.
- topato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Parent has posted what is quite possible the stupidest comment I've ever seen on digg. Some people need 100gigs JUST FOR MUSIC! I myself have about 80 gigs of mp3s (that doesn't include my flac files) and would like to be able to carry them with me. What do emos have to do with iPods? I hate emos as much as the next guy... but that just doesn't make sense. Although I do support your purchase and love of a creative zen 8)
- topato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Derrekito
FINE. How 'bout how long it would take to download 100 gigs of music off OiNK? - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great idea, make a ***** machine that does everything poorly and nothing well. Sounds like Microsoft's strategic planning department at work.
