- HappyScrappy, on 02/07/2009, -1/+9Huh? The tour does take winters off, so of course it has fallen out of the public eye for the moment.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7I'm a big Tiger fan and of course his not playing has an impact on the popularity of the tour but it's certainly not as dire as this guy makes it seem. I mean first of all the 2009 season is only in its 5th week....it's just barely getting going. And the golf that has been played has been great. 160,000+ showed up to watch the FBR open last week.
There's something missing when Tiger isn't there for sure....but the tour can survive without him.
And as for this implication:
"Not even Tiger Woods may be able to come off serious surgery and wish himself back to the power and glory he knew."
That's just ridiculous. All indications are the Tiger that returns will be as good if not better than before. He's been playing with serious knee problems for the last ~2 years....so it's far more likely he'll be better than worse. - TheTorontonian, on 02/07/2009, -1/+6Wow, in this we have finally seen it! The evolution of the-token-black-guy. Finally, for the better.
- eraser34, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5In every tournament, Tiger ALWAYS makes a shot that is seen for weeks, or until the next tournament. The fans are starting to miss that, I know I am.
- qh4dotcom, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3I don't miss him...Tiger is human and he's made plenty of bad golf shots like everyone else
- Tyrghast, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3"And slim pickin's remain behind. It isn't Woods' fault, but it's just a very fallow field that he has plowed under. Consider the talent Jack Nicklaus had to battle: Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson -- all four of them far superior to any of the Lilliputians who have been in Woods' thrall."
I like that point. Tiger has always been good, he's absolutely the best. Guess who keeps it that way? Big business. They'll sponsor him and oh, enough to play in a tournament. They'll put their name on a course. They'll pick up the advertising on the networks. As long as Tiger's there, they'll make it all back and then some. They have no interest in sponsoring new blood, they don't care as long as they bring enough people to the course for Tiger to dominate and then adjust his Nike cap.
I'm not trying to belittle Tiger's talent, he's possibly the greatest player the game has seen. It's just there's exponentially more viewers when Tiger plays than when he doesn't, and those who stand to profit love that. - demne, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Tiger is faking his injury to show how much the tour needs him. Yes he is that self centered.
- spudscaduto392, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2i dunno, the majors in '08 without him were pretty ***** entertaining.
not saying that the u.s. open wasn't the best tournament i'll probably see in my lifetime. - DaviDTC, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2http://www.pgatour.com/video/?/video/pga-tour/high ...
- southernxfried, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3I will still play and watch golf when Tiger Woods is retired or dead. Freakin awesome player, and I am pretty sure he will set some huge records. Golf will live on, with or without him. What difference it will make is up to history to decide. I buried for being a crappy puff piece.
- ThantiK, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1You bring up a good point - his Asian heritage has a lot to deal with it as well. Probably more so than being black. However - black people aren't in a lot of certain sports because of the racism that's still prevalent there. You know how many white-boys (I live next to a golf course which I play on regularly), I've heard say 'tigers a n*****, he shouldn't be allowed on the field'? - a LOT. I have a feeling the same goes for a lot of sports such as swimming. What's keeping black individuals from playing these "other" sports you refer to isn't their ability - but the racism they have to overcome to get to a spot where they can promote and display that ability.
You can call me ignorant all you would like - you may think I'm uneducated in this respect but I've spent many hours looking at the statistics of it for class and I can tell you it's beyond the scope of coincidence. - dafragsta, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1And never fails.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1Well those people could have went and partied elsewhere....obviously they chose the golf course for a reason.
- devfeed, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Dugg that. I'm not impressed. Not even a bit. http://homemasters.info
- bigp3rm, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1What a dick you are.
- FreddieD, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1Golf is like soccer (at least here in the US) in that most people will only watch it if they actively play the sport so they can appreciate the nuances of the game. I play soccer, and can easily enjoy a full 90 minute game, but i'd rather watch paint dry than watch golf.
The exceptions to sports like these come about when two things happen: a phenom hits the scene, and that person is from the USA. If Tiger fizzled out after a few years and Sergio Garcia hit with the same impact, most of the general public in this country would not care to watch.
For instance, if Freddy Adu was to take the world by storm, win the MVP of the 2010 World Cup (i believe it's called the Golden Boot? dont quote me on that) then people would get more involved in soccer in this country far more than anything Beckham could have done.
The name Tiger doesn't hurt either. People seem to go extra nuts for folks with names like Tiger or Chipper. Do you think Tiger would be as marketable if he insisted on going by Eldrick Woods? - LanceUppercut, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1"Not even Tiger Woods may be able to come off serious surgery and wish himself back to the power and glory he knew."
Yeah really, he took some time to flatten his swing to control spin, got hurt, and still dominated. He will be back, he has nothing else left to prove. Most guys on tour hit their stride around 35-42..so he is right there.
As for playing the whole digg money card *****, there are tons of guys on tour that had the privledge to play and practice all they want from when they could walk, never worrying about money. He also did but he simply made the best of it. Having great parents can't hurt. - Optiks, on 02/07/2009, -1/+2Tiger is a product of today's marketing machine, and it's ridiculous to think that no one watches golf if Tiger's not playing. He only plays like 15 to 20 events a year, and a couple of those are contract obligations overseas, anyway. Non-golfers tune in to watch him play because he makes the game exciting. He has a way to make the impossible happen. So naturally it helps that he plays golf like he's from another planet. When he's not there, ratings drop because people who would regularly not watch golf, don't. To them, the "regular" golf tournament may seem like nothing is happening, but plenty is. The difference is that many more players generally are in contention, and the quality golf shots are spread around rather than coming from one guy running away from the field, or fighting off someone hanging around from the pack.
Purists will always find golf exciting to watch no matter who is in the field in any given tournament - the talent pool is *that* deep in today's Tour. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1not surprising.. i like to play golf... but its terrible to watch.. and i only watch when tigers in the hunt, last years US open was some of the best television of the past few years
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1Nuclear console operatrors will become much less glamorous once Homer Simpson gets canceled.

http://digg.com/golf/Preferred_Health_Systems_Wich ... - NoShelterHere, on 02/07/2009, -0/+0Wow, thank you for saying this. Not because I agree with it, but it's important for people with views like yours to speak their minds so that as a society we can be reminded of how far we have left to go.
And as an aside, I love the image of you repeatedly sharing your opinion with your "man-a-black friend", that must make for some real special times, made up conversation guy. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -4/+4Watching Golf pretty much sucks unless he's playing. No one gives a ***** about these ***** that do well or win. Everyone else just makes shots that they should make. He makes shots no one else could make. whatever i'm drunk. all i'm saying is golf is a sport not meant for TV unless something great can happen. Without Tiger, nothing has.
- southernxfried, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1What about his Asian heritage? His mother was not black. I think you are only looking at color and not ethnicity. A lot of great players on all the tours are of Asian decent. Your generalization of the word sport is also alarming. What sports are you referring to? Certainly not swimming. Or golf for that matter. If men of color are better at it, would there not be a bunch of black men dominating the tour? I know of only two which are A Players. One is American the other hails from Fiji. You base your entire argument on one man of color who is not entirely African American. I wont go so far as to call you a racist, but you are definitely very ignorant.
- dafragsta, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1http://www.theonion.com/content/opinion/i_couldnt_ ...
or for that matter... (because I had no idea the sheer volumes of information that has been written on Tiger Woods at The Onion)
http://www.theonion.com/content/search/onion/advan ... - southernxfried, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1I have been to better. The 83rd PGA. A battle between David Toms and Phil Mickleson at the Atlanta Athletic Club. That was awesome. I really do not like the 18 hole playoff that ended in sudden death anyway. That 08 US Open could have been wrapped up on Sunday with one extra hole but wasn't.
- robeysan, on 02/07/2009, -0/+0Yeah, I cannot wait for the Woods Tour... maybe in 09
- LooterMcBeer, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1I honestly think that after this layoff if Tiger wanted to he could charge the PGA an appearance fee for every tournament he enters. Probably as high as $1million and they would pay it happily. Without him Advertisers don't show up. TV ratings drop in the bucket and overall the PGA loses money. The purses since Tiger began on the Tour have gone up 300%. That isn't due to inflation that's because of the big time media coverage and the money sponsors are sinking into golf because when Tiger plays people watch.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -6/+5A man who still manages to keep golf interesting: Mr. John Daly.

- charters14, on 02/07/2009, -2/+1As an avid golf fan, I agree that the PGA tour has lost some of its appeal with the sidelining of Tiger. I think people are disappointed that the history he was creating before our eyes has been put on hold. We all want to celebrate with our beloved icon when he reaches Jack's precious 18, and are impatient for him to return to his epic quest. In the mean time, however, I think its unfair to the rest of the tour. Golf to some degree has gotten more exciting, if you play and appreciate quality golf, because the entire field now has a chance to win every week. It makes for more exciting finishes down the stretch and gives some of the other greats a chance to rack up wins. For me it took some of the excitement out of Tournaments when Tiger entered the field because of his absurd winning percentage. I love the guy for all he has done for golf and his philanthropic endeavors, but give someone else a chance once in awhile. I think the article alludes to lack of publicity golf sponsors have been able to afford given the current financial crisis, which when you couple with Tiger's absence spells a death sentence for TV ratings and tournament attendance. He'll be back, and so will the popularity of golf (especially when people can afford to actually play again).
- khoa1708, on 02/07/2009, -3/+2without tiger, GOLF is invisible
- BugMeNot2, on 02/07/2009, -3/+2Whooooooooahoahoohaooooooooo
- NoShelterHere, on 02/07/2009, -1/+0The FBR is barely a golf event, it's a week of partying around a golf course.
- unhg, on 02/07/2009, -2/+1Buried for inaccuracy. I can name 5 top players that's NOT Tiger Woods.
1) Tiger Woods
2) Tiger Woods
3) Tiger Woods
4) Tiger Woods
5) Tiger Woods
Oh Shi- - Infowarsdotcom, on 02/07/2009, -3/+1I don't even care about Tiger when I watch Golf. I'm a Mickelson fan :P
Want to talk about invisible?
Ken Climo. 12-time world champion and most people have never heard of him. - Spoomeister, on 02/07/2009, -5/+3***** golf. And ***** golfers.

(no, not a rickroll - it's a *****) - ThantiK, on 02/07/2009, -3/+1This has to be said: Black people make sports better.
Golf has been a white-only sport for a LOOOONG time. When Tiger joined I'm sure it was against many-a-old-mans "value" of golf. Yeah yeah I know all about Michael Jordan but his golf was about as bad as his baseball. Take out the young-black man and suddenly all of golf is 50+ white guys with grey hair and hip problems...not literally but in the minds of viewers it might as well be.
I'm going to be called racist and probably get a lot of arguements and flames from my next comment but it seems like nobody in the community is willing to actually say it so here goes: Black people are better at sports because they were bred better. Yes, bred. Argue with me if you want, call me racist all you want, I have many-a-black friend and they agree with me once they get past the initial reaction of my saying it. - Fighter2a, on 02/07/2009, -9/+3Good now it can stay out of sports highlights.
- bastardx, on 02/07/2009, -8/+2The Obama of golf
