- UknowWho97, on 06/17/2008, -4/+57People may say that they know Tiger Woods is great, but for those who don't play golf, they will never truly know just how amazing he is. For a game where you have the least control over whether you win or lose, the fact that he has won 6 tournaments in a row at times is just ***** amazing.
In other sports, everyone is playing the same exact field, course, play area. In golf, no one is playing the same course. People go out at different times of day, face different wind conditions, rain, sun, early morning dew or late afternoon fast rolling fairways. It's completely ridiculous. Also, in other sports, the course stays the same your entire play period. Field dimensions in team sports remain the same the entire game, the road doesn't change for cyclists, the alley's don't change for bowlers. In golf, you have 18 different play fields you have to manage in one session. The game was literally created by insane maniacs who were drunk and bored out of their minds.
This one-legged Major victory is just as historic and legendary as Michael Jordan's flu game in the NBA Finals against the Jazz. Rocco threw everything but the kitchen sink at him and gave the most valiant effort thus far against Eldrick, providing memories that will last a life time. Tiger is a machine....just appreciate him as long as you can, cause if that knee keeps giving him problems I don't see how he can play more than 5 years. - jonthefisherman, on 06/17/2008, -0/+34we should also commend Rocco for his play this weekend and on Monday
He stood toe to toe against the most dominate Golfer ever for 91 holes awesome! - birch25, on 06/17/2008, -0/+11i think that because he's been around for a while many have stopped paying attention to his greatness. this was his 14th major victory, a HUGE accomplishment. and he won this one in 91 holes (instead of the normal 72 he had to persevere through a 19 hole playoff) on a very weak knee. this is right up there with michaei jordan playing in the finals in the 90s when he had a terrible flu and scored 56(ish) points.
tiger's raw talent plus his undeniably charming personality and all-around goodheartedness make him one of the greatest athletes of our time and although most people don't pay attention like they used to, he really does deserve major respect.
congratulations tiger! - IHaveIssues, on 06/17/2008, -4/+14Was I the only guy rooting for Rocco?
- GordonClass, on 06/17/2008, -0/+9I don't think it was his best but it was the most compelling. The 97 Masters and 2000 at Pebble were him at his best.
- jonthefisherman, on 06/17/2008, -2/+11um tiger was basically playing on one leg.
- bstockwell, on 06/17/2008, -1/+8Monday's playoff was the best round of golf I've ever seen. Either one of the players would have really deserved the championship, Tiger playing with him bum knee and Mediate being able to keep up with Tiger at 45, never having won a major and both making awesome shots, never being shaken up by the other's performance.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5No.
- JFallon126, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6The amazing thing about Tiger is that he will dominate golf more than anyone will dominate any sport ever. No one will be as good at their sport as Tiger is at golf. Not Jordan, not Ruth, not Pele...He is likely going to DOUBLE (at least) every golf record there is. Unbelievable.
- MysticSavage, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Some of the best sports drama ever. I really hope Rocco can get another shot at him. Hell, in Rocky 2, Rocky gets the title.
- nedy78, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2You're also playing against one other thing that seems to have a lot of control, your mind. Agreed and dugg.
- Vesuvias, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2You sir summed up the beauty in golf and its creators 'The game was literally created by insane maniacs who were drunk and bored out of their minds.' It is ridiculous and it is absurd to believe they call this a sport... I call it a death wish or an early ulcer =)
I have played since I was really young, and tbh this game is a damn rollercoaster ride of emotions... I think I can remember too many times wanting to break my club on one shot and then redeeming myself the next with a chip-in or great putt. Oh and yes, Tiger is a God of golf. 4 more majors to tie good ol' Jack. - nbcaffeine, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2No, you weren't. "Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the [US Open] champion. It looks like a mirac... It's in the hole! It's in the hole! It's in the hole!"
Thats what I was hoping for. Despite that, amazing round, and kept my office busy doing things other than work on a Monday afternoon. - airjam21, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Add Ali on that list too.
- cromulent742, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2I agree. That was far from his best golf. Even the announcers were saying that Tiger was hitting some of the worst shots they had ever seen from him. But compelling, intense, dramatic? Absolutely.
- jonthefisherman, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2not even close Tiger has won every Major Championship in Golf at least 3 times
no matter what the conditions - Jwoey, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Just wanted to say Jordan scored 38 in the flu game, not 50+. The final score was 90-87, so 38 points was still nothing short of remarkable for someone so sick and exhausted.
- mrshickadance9, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2being a huge sports fan from chicago, the flu game was probably the single best sports moment in chicago history. it was unbelievable. im glad i was alive to watch it. The game jordan played right after he lost his dad (where he totally dominated) was just unbelievable as well.
- mrshickadance9, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3I can honestly say the playoff was the first time I ever watched golf on TV. Boy was I glad I did. I found myself shocked at how there was so much tension between every shot. absolutely awesome. I can't wait to watch more golf on tv.
- eatupmartha, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Gretzky? When he came into the league wasn't he *that* far ahead of everyone else?
- Shiggie, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2oh snap!
- sandraprinsloo1, on 04/15/2009, -0/+1Tiger does have an amazing golf swing.
http://www.getimprovegolfswingguide.com/ - glxyjones, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I disagree with this. I think there are 6 absolutely dominating athletes in history (of major sports).
Ruth
Gretzky
Jordan
Federer
Pele
Tiger
I think those players are with a doubt the greatest of all time in their sport and no one has come close to matching their dominance.
And if you count animals, Secretariat would be on that list. If you want to see the epitome of dominance, look for the video of Secretariat winning the 1973 Belmont, it will give you chills. If he wasn't a horse, winning by 31 lengths would be my vote for the greatest pure example of domination in history. - robdiggity, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1dominant, but yeah, super-mad props to Rocco.
- ROW3BO4T, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Although I think he is the best golfer that has ever played, don't forget that Jack Nicklaus had 73 top ten major finishes! Tiger only has 29. It would take him 10 more years of consecutive top tens to even reach this. That is by far the most impressive record in golf. That record will never be broken with the deeper fields of today.
- Wakeskater, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I dont know how much you consider surfing a sport, but Kelly Slater dominates it.
- kywirelessguy, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I didn't say there wasn't plenty of drama involved with this US Open, but calling it his best major win is a stretch when you consider his dominating performances in the 97 masters and 2000 open.
- glxyjones, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1If you start throwing Ali into the mix, than you've got to include Sugar Ray Robinson who is considered by many to be the greatest boxer in history.
How is someone, who in the minds of most, is already the greatest athlete in his sports history (Federer), not as great of an athlete as a man who many don't even consider the greatest boxer (Ali)? - BTConan, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I almost met Ali once. Saw him at the movie theater. I was too shy to go shake his hand though.
- orlyfactor, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I was. Would be nice to see someone else collect some cash instead of billionaire Tiger.
- rukeypoo, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Ask Tiger. It's all about the Ws. A runner-up, a fifth place, whatever, it's still losing.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1He still has to place top 10 in every match between now and 2019 to match Palmers record.
Not impossible, but not a given. - ganymede2010, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1If? If your auntie had ballz she would be your uncle!
- flipnaman, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1This was a great win for Tiger, but IMO not his best. That my friends is reserved for his 1st major at the 97 Masters. Yes this year he overcame pain from a knee surgery, sloppy driving etc.
BUT
His win in 97 overcame so much more. Setting numerous records, winning by 12, and we cannot forget the cultural significance of that win. A kid who is black/asian winning at Augusta. The waiters clapping as he approached the 18th green. - birch25, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1oops, i asked my roommate for his point total. i guess he isn't the sports buff he claims to be...
- rukeypoo, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Well if you were paying attention, the majority of his drives hit the fairway when he grimaced in pain.
- timdastis, on 06/17/2008, -2/+2yea, rocco did screw up but that's the idea. tiger screwed up plenty too if he didn't leave like 3 puts less than a foot short on birdie puts no playoff would have been necessary. rocco could have easily hit the green on that 2nd bunker shot but he hit a terrible shot. Even then he could have recovered and hit a better shot on his 3rd and one putted to send it to another playoff hole. pressure got to rocco and not to tiger and that's why he is the greatest golfer ever
- yammy1688, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0I'd rank Sampras above Federer.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0maybe tiger will go for the 100 million on America's got talent. Check out his competition. he would win. seriously.
- Vesuvias, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0The point was made that they all play at different points in the day... but I can see your point with Skiiers... but with racers and tour de france? The track conditions are all equal based on the fact that all racers are moving as a pack.
Again the point was made to state that golfers are dealt different changes throughout the day since each golfer starts at a different time of the day... get it? - jonthefisherman, on 06/17/2008, -2/+2while i agree that Tiger is better at Golf than Jordan or Ruth at their respective sports to think that he will finish with 36 Majors is a little bit of a stretch
- glxyjones, on 06/17/2008, -2/+2I think there are 6 absolutely dominating athletes in history (of major sports).

- liberta, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0To think he was with injury aswell. The guy is a legend. Some Golf publication said that if Tiger plays in a tournament the TV audience for the tournament is usually 20% higher than if Tiger was not in it. Tiger IS the Golf industry rolled into one.

xenbet.com - Vesuvias, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0Do you really have to stoop to calling names? Idiot I am not, but to deal with your lack of self esteem I will leave you with this....
I will agree with you on my not being very clear, and yes you are correct in stating that many sports this sort of situation applies to. However, to fully clarify, golf is the type of sport most effected by when you start during the day also applied skill as well... Make sense now? - GregJSchneider, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0You do realize that he was hobbled by a bad knee? Also not many players will have the patience and mental toughness to deal with how volatile he played all week, and still come out with the win.
Rocco was the People's Champ
Tiger is the Champ's Champ - dawgma, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1OK. OK. I get it.
You're an idiot... right?
Think about what you said: "golfers are dealt different changes throughout the day"
Read it again: "golfers are dealt different changes throughout the day "
Do you honestly believe that that does not apply to any other sport???? - Pzycho, on 06/17/2008, -2/+2Yeah, a leg that only seemed to act up after Tiger noticed he hit a bad shot.
