- CrimsonBlur, on 01/30/2009, -0/+27State that title to Tiger Woods as if it is fact... then watch him laugh in your face. In anything you do, you HAVE to analyze what you've been doing in order to find ways to improve.
What they really mean to say is, distracting yourself by thinking about what you are doing, while you are doing it, makes you worse. The point of good technique is that you do it naturally, thinking about it is just going to screw you up. If you actually play golf, that's pretty much the first thing any golf pro or instructor is going to tell you. - greenlant00, on 01/30/2009, -0/+19where is the story?...lame
- FlyingCaveman, on 01/30/2009, -0/+12Obviously, you've never heard of the great Happy Gilmore.
I'm lucky if I can even hit the ball, if I do it the way I'm supposed to. - method7670, on 01/31/2009, -0/+8You know what is more boring than watching golf...
Reading about it... - Sagags, on 01/31/2009, -0/+6Don't bother clicking the link, you get about the same amount of information from just reading the title.
- megawiz, on 01/31/2009, -0/+5exactly, the findings are real, but the way they describe those findings is highly misleading.
- romistrub, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4wow... the presence of "can" and "too much" make that the most obvious statement ever!
In other news, thinking too much can actually make you lose your train of thought! - Jah30, on 01/31/2009, -1/+5before you call anyone names, go play 18 holes and see how you fair. Speak once you have actually played. This is a very tough challenging game, I know cause I play every weekend.
- ricepicker4000, on 01/31/2009, -1/+4as a basketball player, i can attest to something similar. Free throws come much more naturally when ur not thinking about ur form.
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3Dugg for St. Andrews University. Any St. Andreans on Digg btw?
- uclaith, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3brits spell some words differently...
analyzing = analysing
color = colour - agentshiro, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2or any sport really, i was watching a spy tip from burn notice and "michael" suggests that the best players go off instinct...once you start asking them about their technique they start focusing on it too, making their game less natural and that much less...excellent
- AlienMushroom, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2Their analysis technique sucks.
- FrankFutter, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2The Canucks will be out on the fairway soon enough. My oilers will probably have tee times right after them
- Tyrghast, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1This applies to a lot of sports. It's generally accepted the longer you star at a basket during a free throw, the more likely you are to miss.
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1what if I go to one of those places that record my swing so I can see how much I suck
- Myztry, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1A couple of drinks can be beneficial for the casual pool player.
Stops you getting tense and over thinking the shot. - shyguycasey, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1I always wondered if that type of thing was true or if I was just crazy.. I like to go into things not knowing or thinking too much about it cause otherwise it becomes too complicated and you try too hard
- skydragonx000, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1It's not the analysing that makes you worse. Improving your technique makes you better.
It's when you focus on your technique on the big day instead of trying to win. - brundlefly76, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1The first golf shot I ever made in my life was probably the longest and straightest shot I've ever made in my life.
Similarly, I did pretty good on my first 9 hole game.
Then I started 'working on my swing', and lost any talent I had for the game forever. - evan3168, on 01/31/2009, -2/+3Analyzing
- santixx, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Same happens with three pointers for me. When I receive the ball and shoot quickly without thinking I get better shots than when I look at the hoop for a second and then shoot or when I dribble and get into place before shooting.
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1performance anxiety.
It works the same with anything you do, and doesn't have much to do with golf. Analyze it too much, and you lock up. You will usually end up much worse than you were to begin with, because of that. I think golf might make this more obvious, because of the nature of the game. When you start missing 3-foot putts, then you're probably thinking too much about it.
Once you start thinking too much, it's difficult to stop. Overanalyzing is hell. - cmmillerr, on 01/31/2009, -1/+2I'm not sure about "hocky", but I do enjoy hockey.
- ithejosh, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Makes sense, it ought to be natural.
- YumYumTruck, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Oh crap, I just analyzed Tiger Woods's swing, I'll never be able to play golf now.
- DaviDTC, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Just try to not think =O
- waffleninja, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1I've played golf for as long as I can remember, and I noticed this long ago, especially in high school. I would go to my advanced classes, then go to golf practice. Some of my teammates would improve quickly, and I knew them well enough to realize that they were not thinking about their shots at all. I, on the other hand, remained very technical and thought a lot about the best way to approach shots and different swings. Then, when I would be talking as we went along and not paying attention much to my swing or anything, my score was ~0.5 shots better on average per hole. I then realized I would never be a great golfer because I couldn't get out of my own head.
- Darkaged, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1You're much too obvious now, sir
- AlbinoRaven, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1na na na na na na na na...ommmmm
- blang, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1I guess the same would apply it Disc Golf?
- dstargel, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1I think this is a good lesson for amateurs. For the pros like Tiger, doesn't apply. But us average golfers really do need to keep it simple.
- gozroth, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1your is engrish make not good so sentence, young spammer
- timothy53, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1anything I do to makes me worse.
- mgadalsky, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Thanx a lot for the info. Very Doubtful. http://drinkster.info
- aprilfoolie, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1better article:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/edinbu ... - db0255, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1one big DUH
- avianna, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1What kind of crappy story is this? "Scientists say"? WTF?
- uclaith, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1i will admit, reading your golf-related comment was more boring than watching golf
- zantos420, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1bend the spoon... er... let your instincts guide you
- halys77, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1That's crap! Practice makes better. Look at Tiger.
- malonie, on 01/31/2009, -1/+1I dont believe it, after applying the said analysis ,my Wii golf game makes me better than Tiger Woods
- ukno6177, on 01/31/2009, -0/+0Do the same thing to Tiger Woods with what would be considered a difficult putt for him and watch what happens...the same thing. It's called regression toward the mean and is a natural statistical property...shame on you University of St. Andrews for spewing this garbage like it means something
- bwonder, on 01/31/2009, -1/+1Same with baseball swings.
- getinthehole, on 02/05/2009, -0/+0I'm amazed to see so much interest in this research. As a weekend golfer myself, I know I need to think about my putts, but I don't spend time analysing why I missed them - lol - I'm too busy counting up the shots I've just taken to get to the hole and i usually need both hands, and as a man, I can't engage my brain at the same time!
'aprilfoolie' is right, there is a better article on news.bbc etc - see aprilfoolie's comment below.
For a fuller account of the article - the Metro one is a bit basic - i came across a great blog - looks new to me - go to www.start2playgolf.com/blog. Also checkout www.start2play.golf the host site. There is also a link on the blog to the research site for a summary version of the research. g_i_t_h - know what I mean? - bekindin09, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0I play for a living, that's 1
- Barackalypse, on 01/31/2009, -1/+1I can say the same thing in way less words: analysis paralysis.
- bekindin09, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0All of those who commented on this page and perhaps some others
- bekindin09, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0You'd be surprised how good hockey players are at golf, but I'd be surprised if you knew how to wipe your ass
- bekindin09, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0Leaving a comment about a sport you aren't interested in makes you a douche
